Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

DeckBuilding like a CHAMPION . . .

Basing your playing level off of results rather than skill is flawed beyond reasoning....

How does one measure skill, if not by the results of that skill? Without results as a ruler, 'skill level' becomes a very subjective and arbitrary reference.

Your ability to recognize patterns and scenarios accurately in deck building and perfectly respond to a situation in a game over long periods of time represent your playing and deck making abilities.

If you can make a deck that can work well under circumstances that you will be playing it under (such as countering a specific deck or playing under varied rules), you are a high rated deck builder.

If you are a player who can withstand the stress of long tournaments with little or no ill effects on your playing skills, able to respond with one deck to a wide variety of decks and playing styles, and can continue thinking on your feet regardless of the circumstances, you are a high rated player.

Note that all of these scenarios are only viable at large tournaments, such as States or Nats.

You can win 10 games in a row with a mediocre deck by playing against inconsistent decks. How can you claim you're an 8 just from those?

I think my question is still valid. How can you measure any of those qualities except by measuring results? Obviously you should be discriminating of which results you consider, but if you get first at States, Regionals, and Nationals, those are the results of skill. And, I think very few people would subsequently argue that basing your assessment of your skill level off results like that is "flawed beyond reasoning." That's all I meant. I wasn't trying to suggest that anyone who can go undefeated at their local league day is automatically a 10.

I never said results mean nothing, I states basing off of results and NOT skill was flawed beyond reasoning. obviously doing something like top 8 at Nats means you are most likely a skilled player, saying that you are better than someone who did NOT top cut simply because they missed the cut is flawed, seeing has how luck has such a large impact on the game.

I never said results mean nothing, I said that basing your skill off of only results and not experience or skill is flawed and silly.

even though this thread is from feb '09, I'll say that I'm probably somewhere between a 5-7, more of a 7 in my actual area, but outside of that, probably a 5-6.....I've yet to attend anything outside of Wichita, KS (the nearest area for me to attend)

9 -Boss Player You really feel like you're top tier now. People are starting to see your name on the matchup and are going "aw man... I got you this round " You're no longer an autowin for anyone; in fact, they feel like an Autoloss TO YOU!! [DEL]There's still a handfull of guys that you JUST CANNOT BEAT if you're life depended on it[/DEL]. So, you go into tourneys knowing you have a great chance of making top cut, but you don't really expect to win the whole thing. You're top cutting more than half of the time now!!! You feel like you can beat the champion players "if you get the right cards at the right time"... you're getting to be a pretty solid player.
You FINALLY understand what a DECK FIX really is. You finally understand your PLAYSTYLE (your tendencies). You make lists better ... for YOU (you know longer play ANY list "as listed")

You've even started building your own decks (from scratch) and some of them can win (but you find yourself falling back on proven "archetypes" when tourney time comes).
Still, you KNOW there's just something missing in your game that keeps you from being the PRO player that always wins. [DEL]You may even try to join a team [/DEL]and swap ideas with a small pool of good players in an effort to surprise the circuit with an SD or an extremely refined Archetype (i.e. teching Mesprit in Gigas w/ Palkia and cyclone to get around MewTwo techs!).

I would accurately put myself at 9.

8 - A Contender - You're really starting to have fun with DECK STRATEGY and you're playing decks that you don't see everyone else playing. Pokemon is more enjoyable to you now than ever because the infinite deck possibilities has revealed itself to you. You are really gaining an understanding of METAGAME and which decks should be played. You're starting to tell the difference between people who talk and people who know (and those who know are keeping secrets!). So, you're "listening to the quiet ones that should be watched " You're that dark horse that can beat ANYBODY if your cards fall right. You haven't mastered the art of tweeking your deck to make it more consistent, but you FINALLY understand the concept of Deck strategy. When you get the build you need, nothing can stop you. Unfortunatley, you deck isn't consistent enough to beat the Boss Players who can afford to sacrifice and setup to get around your strategy. You're the kind of guy that plays risky inconsistent decks because "noone else is playing it" like TogeChomp, Magkiss, and Skittles. Decks that depend on coin flips or luck-of-the-draw. [DEL]You haven't experienced playing against top tier (Boss and Pro) players enough to know why those luck-based decks are too inconsistent to be played in tourney.[/DEL] Hoo boy, have I ever! However, noone has teched for you and if they stall and let you catch your setup... you can win. You may top cut 1 in 7 tourneys on sheer matchup luck.

The MAIN thing seperating you from the BOSS player is experience. You just need to keep playing to see what works BETTER (not what works... but what works BEST!). You'll keep experiementing and hitting the world with strange/creative card combos that only YOU are BRAVE ENOUGH to try. You keep the tourney interesting and put creativity and fun above ratings.

now that i've been playing for a year longer(than last rating) i think i can safely say i'm a 8. I mean, come on, Starmie?

I'm a 9-10 in my home town. But the people here are...

Let's say I'm the only one - maybe one of a couple - who visits the Gym.

Im like a -1, I am just so bad at this game. So bad that when I get a bye it counts as a loss. I think my rating is gonna be under 1200 by the end of the season

For a very long time I was a cacoon, but then last year I tried OP. My friends from league helped me with a deck, and it got e to the level of about a 7. Now, I'm slowly becoming a 10, I love being in masters.

In case you didn't know in order to become a ten at this game one has to go on a quest to win worlds not once but twice. And after all is said and done your total rank resets next year back to a nine making the entire quest pointless.
