Equality for all? Blind Players and Pokemon

Either that, or sound cancelling headphones for the opposing player. A Judge (somebody not related to the blind player in any way shape or form) sits next to the blind player and informs him of gameplay changes. If the player asks about his/her hand, the Judge asks the opponent to put on the headphones, then tells that player. Opponent takes off headphones when the Judge is done. It would require the full attention of one Judge and a $50 piece of equipment, but I can't think of anything else to do in this situation.
That's a clever idea...

What have I started? I was involved in being trained training for total respect and equal opportunities and made a comment that blind people (or anyone with any form of disability) should have an equally fair chance at participating in a tournament whatever the need for judges. The point I was making that I am glad a lot of people can appreciate after Megavelocibot started the thread is that preventing participation or vulnerabilising a player to cheating because there aren't enough judges is discrimination. If blind people don't have a chance to play, no-one should. Surely spirit of the game should include any player with a bye making every attempt possible to promote a positive environment including overlooking such a game for fair play.

It must be a difficult issue for POP. It would be interesting to know if they have consulted anyone over the matter and if there are any plans. Thank-you for generating a discussion and posting in ask the masters MegaVelocibot.

Ah, yes... saw this on TV once. Still... not to sound rude, at all, but... well, clicking only seems like it'd help him or her know where the opponent is.

Kinda of a curious debate.... A blind person who might not want to "start-up" with the game, because the difficulty in inertia. (Maybe, but I don't see the attraction to get going, but who knows.)

But, let go opposite, let say a current player (like yourself) losses his sight from some sort of disease or accident.... It happens. Would they/you still wan't to play... How would it be done....

Obviously playing pokemon would be not be on top on the list of To-Do's if this happened to someone, but what if.

As for the possibility of a current player losing his/her sight/hearing, if it were me I know for sure that I would continue to play. Mostly because I will not let anything, or body, tell me that I can't do something. Sure it would be hard but I say that it would still be worth it.

As for any card game, if they had a player that wanted to play, but needed accomadations, the company if based in the USA, at all, would be forced into making sometime of accomadation. otherwise, they could be sued and put out of business, due to ADA.

Just because a player is deaf, doesn't mean that they would need a huge change in the game to play. Even at worlds this is easly fixed with a thing called: a translater. Playing a Deaf person is just like playing a person that speaks a different language, Japanese, Spanish, French...

I really hope that ALL players would have the same mindset, and encourage all types of people to play the game that we all love. I also hope that because of this topic a player that has a "disability" (I really can't stand that word) makes it either into Nats or Worlds, if not this year then why not next.

There is (or it should be made so there is) no reason why a blind person can't win Worlds. It's just unlikely as there aren't many blind players.

Me too. I would hire someone to read the cards for me during matches, if that's what I'd have to do to keep playing.

Well I have A deaf friend who plays Pokemon, I couldn't find him A birthday card that was good for the deaf so I got him one with Braile on it...:)P)

seriously, I don't know if it would cost more or less, but the Blind community should not be discriminated. All the text on cards should be indented out, so that you can feel the writing.

You know what, I feel this game needs to allow Deaf and Blind players. It's only fair that everyone gets to enjoy this game. I for one, encourage it.

Wouldn't equality mean they get no special treatment? :| Seriously, how is it equal if we're bending over backwards for them? Sounds one sided to me. /devil's advocate

hm this is very interesting....

I believe if a player who wants to play competitiveally (sp?), they would work with the HJ to a compromise on how it could be done. That person knows their visual is gone, but they would have a backup.

Now, if i were blind I would have a translator. Now if the SOTG was good, most players would not object to the translator, and if they did, then i would refer them to the SOTG document.

IMO NO player should not be allowed to play (barring the obvious individuals eg banned players).
