Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

gengar -- viable for worlds?

I played dialga against aylam in top 8. I beat him the first game and then the 2nd game he gets t1 gengar to kill my crpbat leaving me with baltoy I would have won that game if dialga and nm weren't my last 2 prizes and I wigged on an energy to pretty much kill his nq the turn after I scooped. Then game 3 another turn 1 gengar I would have won this game if I stalled I was up five two with like five minutes left but I didn't then it would have come down to a flip but I misplayed and I keep thinking about it. But he did get one flip in this game but that was on a badly damaged dialga

Having said all that gg aylam and u deserved it u were the 1st person to use toxic fang on my dialgas a great play and best of luck at worlds

Stigma : I think its point less of you and Gengar to fight because luck and time is a part of the game there is nothing you can do about it and Gengar those comments stigma made are true you did get lucky but you also had to know how to play your deck.and IMO I think Gengar will have a chance in Senoirs because of the mass amount of players going to play it but will not win Jounior or Masters

lol@the person who called me jealous
I got my worlds invite, what do I have to really be jealous of?
Also, the_ralts - I understand a lot of matches come down to time, but when you win top 8 and 4 off of prize luck and time against one of your worst matchups, there's a problem. It's not right.
Also, I got a PM from some random kid saying I should "aplogize to aylam while I still can"
LOLOLOL no.
Im not bashing you, Aylam. I even said you have a LOT of skill to make it to 1st, but you ALSO had a LOT of luck.
And Aylam, that's a really bad way to call a deck bad. I can say the same thing about your deck. You start with:
Psychic, Psychic, Gastly, Gastly, Nidoqueen, BTS, BTS, and draw into a bebe and get your uxie sprayed.
You're probably going to lose when you have a bad hand. It's just how the game is.

As for the topic at hand - NO. Gengar will NOT be a smart play. A lot of decks are running 3 unown G as a tech for it, which will pretty much stop it in its tracks.

- There are a few decks that can play around gengar and render it useless, there are techs that beat it all by themselves.
- Everyone is expecting Gengar

...

Gengar is too popular to be good.

There's not much point argueing any more over the luck required in Aylam's win, so I'll just get back to the OP's topic.

I do wholeheartedly agree with you about gengar. If people play smart (Which they will, since it's worlds. You're not going to find a bunch of random people who don't know how to play against it like at nationals) then gengar is very easy to beat out of the higher tables. Add on to the fact that like you said, most people run not just two but three unown G. Gengar's damage really suffers.

Let me put it this way.

At nats, the one thing that I thought when I saw I was against any form of Gengar, was "Oh boy! Here comes a free win!". :p

I am not knowledgeable enough about Gengar decks and how they match up to make a judgment on this topic. I do think it is kind of ironic that there are so many posts on other threads talking about how unfair/broken Gengar is, and yet many posts on this thread deem it to be of little or no threat.

I guess maybe the key is, once a card/deck becomes well known, it can be countered. It begs an interesting question - do I continue to play a deck that others have learned to counter - because I am very familiar with it and can play it well, or do I switch to a deck that will be a surprise to my opponents, even though I have less experience playing it?

not all the time but yes if a deck becomes to well known it WILL be teched for and people will find ways around it it just like GG people found ways to beat it and also you want to try to sick with a deck you know how to play the best so you dont make any misplays that could cost you a game

i run a gengar/machamp deck as my main and i'm not really being a fan of gengar as of lately. i know gengar has a lot of luck with him, but it doesn't seem like it can hold its own with the higher damage dealers. you pretty much have to bank on poke-powers and fainting spell. doesn't seem like it would be too good in the world league

but techincally.... NO ONE is expecting gengar becuase everyone is bashing it lol...

lol @ everyone taking OUT unown G becuase they think they wont see gengar ????

Gengar is not, never was and never will be the only reason Unown G is run in the vast majority of competitive decks. There are tons of benefits one gains from using that card. The fact that a popular cause of Unown G's usefulness all of a sudden becomes unpopular does not imply a decline in Unown G's popularity or playability.

..and here I was thinking this was a rhetorical question.

It is a relevant part of the meta. It has some bad matchups, which good players seem to think are 100% in their favor vs gengar. It has some good matchups, so it really depends on how popular it's good matchups plan to be. I wouldn't play Gengar, but it has a decent matchup against a large number of decks that play Rare Candy. And is explosive enough for a filthy, filthy lucksack to stabilize hard before Unown G is an answer.

Has anyone read Pooka's report?
I know he's a beast, but notice how he kept Gengar's damage next to zero for the two games he played against it.
IMO, after the initial Shadow Room Blitz, Gengar is fairly easy to recover against and counter for the win.
People will play it, people will expect it, and Gengar will probably lose on Worlds level.

I know that.
But are there many new key cards for GeChamp with the next set ?

Without thoses , can it do the job or does it remain an average build ?
