H1N1 virus[Swine Flu], your opinions?

Allergy and Swine Flu are 2 different things

heres the symptoms of having the swine flu can cause.

  • Aches
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Cough
  • Runny Nose
  • Fatigue
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Don't say that!!! I have felt that way for the past two days. I am feeling a lot better today though.

My understanding:

The CDC is reporting only confirmed cases. The problem is that most hospitals ... even big ones ... can't do the test to get a positive id. In most cases they have to send off potential samples to state labs and there is usually a 3 day or longer lag time before the state lab can offer the confirmation or not. Rough estimates are that we could have as many as 10 to 30 times the number of "confirmed" infections.

Folks have little to no resistance to this since it's a new strain, meaning that it can spread to a much higher percentage of folks than a normal flu. This is also a factor in the death rate of Swine Flu.

So far things have been OK in the US largely due to infected folks being treated well ... but the supply of drugs used to fight this thing are limited. If we have a true national outbreak there will not be enough for everyone. Things could get really ugly.

That’s the bad news.

The good news is that early reports seem to indicate that it doesn’t spread as fast as some other Flu variants. It seems to spread to families where one person is infected but it doesn’t seem to be spreading to whole communities from a single infected person.

I’m hopeful that the spread factor will keep us out of worst case scenarios.

In case anyone is curious, the numbers at the time I am writing this are

Arizona 1
California 14
Indiana 1
Kansas 2
Massachusetts 2
Michigan 1
Nevada 1
New York 50
Ohio 1
South Carolina 10
Texas 26
TOTAL COUNTS 109 cases
1 death

That one death was a 2 year old Mexican Child in Texas.

http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/index.htm

Who the parents had taken the child to a indoor shopping mall in Houston knowing the child had swine flu.

Well the way I'm looking at it is,
In America so far only 1 in every 109 infected has died,
99.99% chance of living if you get it basically.

It was just confirmed here in TN earlier today. There have already been calls sent out warning parents to keep their kids home from school if they have flu like symptoms.

I think that it is going to spread, but it's by no means a super virus that will wipe out humanity.

Personally, I think the media, as usual, has blown things way out of proportion in the name of ratings.

The concern from the various health organizations (WHO, CDC) is that the virus will spread rapidly since it is a strain for which there is no vaccine or natural immunity in humans, and that obviously increases the risk to people that are already vulnerable to everyday influenza. The concern is not that we will have people falling over dead in the street like some repeat of the black plague. There so far has been no confirmation that H1N1 is directly responsible for the deaths that have occurred so far. In all likelyhood, the deaths would have occurred regardless of the influenza strain involved.

WHO has already stated that the usual procedures (avoiding contact with sick people, washing hands, maintaining good health habits) will help limit the spread, and that "most of the previously reported swine influenza cases recovered fully from the disease without requiring medical attention and without antiviral medicines." For the vast majority of us, this will be no worse than our usual sniffles.

So let's summarize:

  • As always, maintaining good hygiene practices will help keep you from getting it.
  • If you do get it, you're very likely to live.

But thanks to the hype, now everyone thinks their sniffles are H1N1. That will needlessly tax medical resources to the limit. It's already started in my area.

My advice is, DON'T PANIC.

I said that they weren't the cause of it. I did say that if they had just come from Mexico that they stood a good chance of spreading it.

And... there are probably more Mexicans spreading it than anyone else. Lets take a second and figure out where most of the Americans got it from.

But illegals haven't spread it here, most of the cases are from people who went to mexico for break and came back with it. We don't need to close the border over this, as already been quoted in some articles which I am wayyyy to lazy to retrieve, "A line of US border guards on the rio grande can't stop this from spreading."

Maybe this will give them some incentive to FINALLY keep all those illegal immigrants out of the country...

They take our jobs, use all our stuff, don't pay takes, now stand a good chance of getting us sick if they're new.... what next? -.-

And what exactly says its "your" job? What gives you the right to claim that job for yourself just beause you've been born in the US ? What would you do if you would have been born in mexico and live in poverty?

You act like they would do that kind of stuff because they enjoy it so much...
But just close the borders and let them die out there, at least we're save, right :thumb:?

And btw, arent borders an intervention in the free market ? Who's to blame if that mexican guy gets the job and not the american? Maybe the american guy should just do something about his competetiveness ? (thats when liberalism comes back at you)

No human being is illegal, nowhere and never !

Sry 4 OT but this kind of ignorance just makes me mad >_>

No, YOU don't get it.
Cases of "immigrants taking jobs" has to do with the employers, not the immigrants. Employers who give illegal immigrants jobs usually overlook having to get proof of residency before employment, but many of them know that they can use the Mexican immigrants literally desperate to earn 1 cent and pay them close to nothing, as they are willing to work harder than they are being paid.

If employers stopped hiring illegal immigrants, illegal immigrants would stop coming.

You overlook these facts and base your "facts" off of conservative propaganda tripe.

The kind of ignorance that confuses liberalism with libertarianism?

I would fail to see how liberalism would have an impact on this situation, other then giving an unemployed illegal immigrant money at the expense of someone who pays taxes.

Ah. So it is confirmed. Great.

I checked wikipedia and still dont get the difference. I'm talking about this "the government should not interfere with the free market because on a free market, the goals of the individual lead to the best possible market situation and finally to prosperity for everyone" stuff. Blame it on the language barrier :p

What I meant that this would also mean that everyone should be allowed to live everywhere and if you loose your job to an immigrant than its probably because he was more competetive.

Thats what a totally liberal situation would look like, wouldnt it ?

They confirmed it in TN? Great. In Shelby county no less. Even better.

I seriously mean it. If you're sick, stay the heck at home.

I might not be going to league for a while. lol.

my biggest beef with mexico is that their drug cartels' violence has begun to spill over into texas. many people have already been caught in the middle of the drug-related shootings. drug cartels rule mexico, and we can't let that take away our peace.

obama could close the border temporarily and kill 2 birds with one stone i suppose, if he thinks it will help against the spread of the swine flu.

But they do pay taxes, if the employers aren't setting aside salary to pay their employee's social security and income taxes, it's the employer that's committing the crime, not the illegal immigrant, and yet the illegal gets nothing for it. They don't get benefits when they turn 65. If they are getting paid under the table, who's to say that same employer can't do the same for an American worker?

Anyway, we have 13 in our state, quite a bit, and they're all in the heavily populated, western side. So far the virus is pretty benign, but mutations can always happen, as they can with any other outbreak. Honestly, I still think the thing is overblown, it'll probably just increase a bit more then drop off completely. Though for being overblown, at least we're getting sufficient coverage to be prepared for it.

I don't think it would work. The Flu is all around the world now, and it would eventually reach America again.

All the big name north American cities seem to be where most of the cases are. It does seem fitting though.
