I was just reviewing my old scores when I noticed something pretty amazing. The growth if the game here in Washington state has just been huge. Back in the 2003-2004 pokemon season we had 33 different players particpate in Pokemon Tournements, in just five short years the 2008-2009 season has seen 203 players particpate in Pokemon Tournements and we are just half way through the season.
That is an amazing growth of +170 players in 5 years.

What kind of growth has your area seen in that same timeframe?

My State had only 37 players, it now has 139 which is an huge jump. It shows that the game is getting more popular which is an extremely good thing. :thumb:

Lemme look at my state's comparisons...

37 to 139, with an Organizer switch in the middle. And we're expecting to see about 170 this year. Especially considering that we already saw a 108 person City Championship...

I would also be curious to see the 2002 numbers compared to today.

2003 was a huge dip due to the transition to PUI from WOTC. That was probably the low point. But I'm willing to bet that current numbers are STILL way up from the pre-PUI numbers. IMO, that's the real growth.

From Bullados's sig: "Would of" makes no sense. Look up the definitions in Webster. Combining the two words makes you look stupid. The expression that you are looking for is "Would HAVE".

I TOTALLY AGREE. This drives me crazy.

Also, it's "supposedly" no "supposebly."

I agree lot of people are getting back in the game or atleast talking about it again. I know where I'm at we have been getting a lot of new league players.

Yes, lots of people are getting back into it (Myself included). I personally think it's because the game is getting a LOT cheaper than I remember it.

Unfortunalty, Oklahona has actually LOST players. We've never had a big Senior and Junior crowd, but most of the Masters left. I think we have about 25 Masters, 4 Seniors, and I believe only 2-3 Juniors.

That blows me away in OK.

I know you have a good PTO, but know nothing about your leagues and the like.

In St. Louis we have grown from 2 leagues at the "death" in 2003 (DK, Dizzy), to 5 St. Louis Area Leagues today..

Belleville, IL (Fantasy Books)
St. Peters (B&B)
Eureka (B&B)
South County (GameNite)
St. Peters (Neutral Zone)

And thanks to great store and leader support...all of these are thriving right now.

I love this game.

There are 3 Registered leagues in Oklahoma. South Oklahoma City is the only league that seems to even know about Premier events. The people in Tulsa and North Oklahoma City don't seem to know Premier events exist, even though they are Registered on go-pokemon.com

Hey good news you are mistaken, I checked your records and in 2003-2004 OK had 32 players particpate in tourneys. This year the number is 39 players particapting for a 5 year growth of +7 people. Not huge but it is growth, and that is much better then you thought it was.
Your growth rate in 5 years has been 21.87%

BC had like 4 in 05 or something lol
We are now getting 30-40 a tournament

Not amazing but still a growth

LOL I thought you were exagetating a bit on the low end, but you infact overestimated by doubble the number of players in BC in 2003-2004. Thats right you had 2 players that year, .... and this season ther have been 74 players in BC Pokemon events. That is a very good growth of +72 and an increase of 3600% in the playerbase. I think we have our winner for the biggest precent increse durring the 5 year period

Yep, so a long time ago, Memphis used to pull about 25 people on an average day. Then a couple years back we had a JAA down the street from our league. Plus with the help of our AMAZING PTO, and this lady and this guy, we've grown to at least 100+ players. Although we only had about 75 people at our recent cities (alot of regulars missed for some reason)

We've also grown a second league after like a kajillion years.
So in an average we've gained ~10 people a year. Pretty good.
Maybe more, I'm sure Prof. Clay knows a more correct number.

I just wish that all of the Chicago Pokemon events would have had a PTO like Clay to promote the game like that. Our States could've rivaled Oregon and Texas...

You know I hear a lot about the amazing attendance numbers in Oregon, but that is really misleading. Nothing against Oregon, but thier attendance numbers are misleading , I mean this year they have had amazing attendance, and BDS and Mr Raichu:put on an incredibly fun experiance. But the States attendance are higher in Oregon then Washington only because each year 30-40 Washington players travel down to particpate in Oregon states while only 10-15 Oregon players tend to make the trip up to play in our State Championships. Maybe this year will be different, we will have to waite and see.

This post brings up several thoughts. First off, numbers are only one aspect of the health of the game. We have a lot of fun with our friendly NW rivalry, but I think a better measure of a healthy OP environment is growth and the experience players have at events.

However, when we do look at attendance, why would we only look at players from the state where the event is held? Travellers are a huge part of this game. But hey, I'll play along. Let's use your own numbers. We'll reduce the OR total of 199 by 40 WA players and the WA total of 139 by 15 OR players. That leaves WA at 124 and OR at 159. Hmmm.

The other thing I need to mention is you are only looking at players with My Pokemon accounts when you are pulling the numbers from the Ratings and Rankings page. There are a whole lot more players participating, It's just hard to get an accurate count.

Bottom line - I whole heartedly agree that the game is continuing to experience fantastic growth, especially this year. I can't wait for States and Regionals. Maybe we can get a larger number of OR players up to WA States this year and finally bring back a few of your trophys to Oregon!!!

My area/"state" is Norway, so here goes.
The growth in Norway has been quite immense since the start of the Pokémon USA era:

Norway Nationals 2000: 28 players in total
Norway Nationals 2003: 28 players in total

Later in 2003: Pokémon USA gets the license, Pokémon USA and Bergsala take over

Norway Nationals 2004: 65 players in total
Norway Nationals 2005: 137 players in total
Norway Nationals 2006: 151 players in total
Norway Nationals 2007: 214 players in total

Four years in a row, we set a new record. :) Unfortunately, we only had 153 players for Nationals 2008, but that seemed to be mainly because of a poor choice of date, that collided with a National holiday and other things.
