Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Is it fair to make worlds an invite only event??

Yes, the MAIN event at Worlds should be invite only. If you can't get an invite from Nationals, Gym Challenges, Stadium Challenge, the Friday grinder tourney, or by getting a top ranking; do you really think you could beat some of the top players in the country(international players not included due to problems with your distributors)?

Guess what? I know I have 0% chance of getting an invite, because I know though I'm hardly a newb, I'm not a good enough player to beat the best the are. I'm also going to Worlds to play in as many side events as possible. Hope to see you there....invite or no.

Consistancy is also part of being "Best of the best". A great player not only wins, but wins consistantly- this means that (for example) like mewsmoms family, 5 CC medals...thats enormous! Someone like that should have no problems earning an invite, especially given multiple chances to do so. Why? Because they have a consistent record. That means even if they miss one chance from luck, they'll probably hit another. And if luck screws over on all chances..well, this game -is- still based in luck, y'know. But it becomes less likely, because luck really only gets to hurt you when you yourself have made some sort of error. (Not always). So the best players maximize their decks abilities every time, and it shows- these kinds of people will be in the Top 4 every week. Kinda like you always see the same people in the top 8 at your local tournament.

These kinds of players are the ones that should be at worlds, and they will be. I've got faith in that. As for myself...all I can do is try, because I don't think I'm quite there...yet. Oh, and as for the top 16 global getting invites.. thats cool. I'll never get one, although it's kinda freaky that the systems being messed with from what I hear, but I just remember that ranking in a list is nothing when it comes time to step up to the table again. You gotta figure theres players out there that don't get into too many sanctioned tournaments for whatever reason, and so their rating won't help them get invited. These tournaments are their shot to see if they've got what it takes, too.

Just my thoughts...

Ok now. These are the points I'd like to state:

-There are some good players that never even see the light of day in competitive tourneys. Just because you place well in a major tourney, that doesn't make you the "best of the best".

-Somewhere, there may be a little kid that goes to his or her little local league. He or she may have very good potential, but doesn't have the cash, time, or travel methods to play in tourneys.

-Some kids and adults sould have probably given up at this game long ago because they have the worst luck with rolling dice and flipping coins. And what I hate is that a majority of my games end up being who draws what and who flips heads or tails. I don't even enjoy these games (which usually seem to occur more in limited situations). Just because someone has bad luck doesn't mean that they aren't good.

-And yet, there are even us players who can't seem to win tournaments and games when they matter most. I may have won a CC, but that will do no good for me whatsoever once states, nationals, gym challenges, and stadium challenges role around.

-And my final point... sometimes they put the invite and trip tourneys so so far away from where we live that we can't attend! (ex. not all kids can drive 800 miles to Columbus for Origins, and not all kids can go 400-700 miles to Houstan or St. Louis for stadium challenges.)

My summary... there are good players out there that we haven't even seen or heard of whether this be because of limited card pool, cash problems, unluckiness, not having travel methods, or not having time. When having a world championship tournament, we should take ALL players into account. Not everyone can spend $1000 on air fair, hotel expenses, food/grocerys, etc. to go to Orlando this August for Worlds. If I don't go, will someone just play for all the less fortunate Pokemon players out there!?!

If so happen I win the invite, does my guess have to be in the same state or can they be in a different state as long as we meet up?

That question is a veryyyy good one. You should ask about the guest by emailing pokemon usa and seeing what they say. I dont think he/she does but its best to ask in that situation. If i get teh invite i know my best buddy LuMaga1 will be heading to orlando with me but i dought ill get that lucky so i can always shoot for the stars and dream a little dream.

HypnosProjectHQ, I don't buy your argument that the best players might be unknown. I'll "bet money" that any top-level Worlds player (lets say a top 16 player) will beat these so-called unknowns 4-out-of-5 times. Let me give you an example.

A few months ago, a new player showed up at our local tournaments. He was beating all the locals until I asked my son to play at a tournament in order to show him what it was like to play a top-level player. Not once has this new player beaten my son in tournament play. (He's won a couple "games" but lost those best-of-3 matches.) This player has gotten better since, and should give my son a tougher time at the upcoming CO States, but then again, he's not really an "unknown" anymore.

I don't doubt there are good unknowns out there, maybe even a rare few who could compete with the best World-level players. But, if those players don't "leave their closests," they're NOT the best, and the meta-game-alone would probably "kill" them at Worlds.

Anyway, as far as invitional-only for Worlds, meganium45 "hit it on the head." It wouldn't be fair to give local Florida players access to this event when the rest of the World wouldn't enjoy that same luxury.

5 or 6 chances to make it to the big dance and your complaining? Imagine having that many chances to make the championship in a major sport. As far as an unknown player being the best, odds are low that you could just play the qualifiers and win a trip. You need to play before the qualifiers to figure out what and how to play @ the qualifiers. And yes we have several top 20 players @ my local league and even more at any qualifier I plan on attending. I am not sure why that matters.

I agree with psyco.

I was wondering how long this would take to turn out to be a "damn evil nintendo" thread. I see its starting.

It seems to me that there are several new ways to get in and they ARE planning a WC.

I am happy. Cant make all the qualifing events but am planning on driving half a day to one. and win or lose we will have fun enjoing the people and the play

Depending on how many invites are given, it's a good thing. I'd think that a minimum of 32 invites for each age group would be appropriate, but 64 would be better.

honestly people, worlds is INVITE only because they want nly the ones that WIN in there, sure there are kids who cannot go, there are kids who have a lot of potential and don't have resources to go, but Nintendo CAN'T just go asking who needs travel accomodations and who doesn't, if u couldn't make it to a Gym/Stadium Challenge, or to Nationals or the grinder tourney, tough, Nintendo wont ask globally for you to raise your hand if you need travel accomodations and just hand them out, so if you put alot effort and didn't make it to these events, or are a good player, got the worst luck and couldn't win one of these events, TOUGH, try next year, but stop whining, if you weren't good enough to get there, TRY next year.

Now regarding the international issues, I live in Mexico and know how frustrating it feels when you don't get the adequate support etc, but I for one can assure you international buddies, that patienece is the only thing required, I know that with no support its hard to keep interest etc. but be patient, IT HELPED US, it helped Europe fellas (and they did the most waiting and sacrificing), so all I cna say is be patient, and just keep trying, it'l be worthwhile once you get leagues etc. running, remember Nintendo isn't even 1 year into this, so probably by next year, u guys will have what u need.

Well, here's my rant for the day, you can skip to the next post if you feel the need.

I think there are two sides to every story here. Sure, I don't think that local Florida players should be given a free entrance to Worlds just due to their physical location, But there are some valid arguments to be said about an open tournament.

I originally got into the pokemon "game" when Gym Challenge set came out, even though we (my son and I) were collecting since Jungle came out. I had the idea that my son and I could become closer, and we could have fun together, which indeed has happened. We progressed, both of us, as players to become some of the best players in the area. Then the professor program came around, and first I did, then Josh became a professor to help out some of the younger, and perhaps not quite so skilled players in the area. Due to some bad experiences with a local gym, a friend and I set out on our own, opened up another gym in town, and now have helped many, many new people to get into the game. I spend quite a bit of money and time helping out our gym participants, with local tournaments (usually the time spent AND money for tournament support), buying pokemon stuff for challenges and the like, cards for more unfortunate kids, picking up kids from outlying areas, and travelling to major events in the Toronto area. I am the tournament organizer for our area, and when we attend events in Toronto, I seem to be the Judge of choice lately, with my son at my side. I also was a head judge and contributed majorly at a tournament here where all money raised went to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We raised $2000 that day. I also try to help (when I can) people internationally to get promos they need for their leagues due to current shortages for one reason or another, sometimes actually buying promos to send. As luck would have it, both Josh and I are still among the best players in our area, but due to being judges, will never see even close to top spots in the standings. I know that both Josh and I could hold our own in a tournament setting with any of those in the top 16 spots, including "Naught Rheal" or whatever his name is (sorry couldn't resist). Being in Canada, chances are slim that someone will magnanimously pay for Josh and I to go down to play. Seeing that Pokemon Organized Play won't even schedule a State Championship here in Canada, chances are slim that we'll even get a Gym or Stadium Challenge. If we do, WHO DO YOU THINK WILL BE JUDGING? What do you think our chances are of getting an invite? I'm not posting here to blow my own horn, .... though I guess I did do that a bit didn't I? But when you look at it honestly, what makes my contribution any different than say RainbowRichards, who from what I've been told does exactly the things I mentioned in this post? Or how about Ukpokemonpro or NoPoke who have managed to keep the game alive in the UK with little or no support from Nintendo, or how about Rainbowgym's plight, working to build pokemon against almost insurmountable odds? Or how about Skywolf1's dedication to champion the rights of our international brothers and sisters? How does that seem better than SteveP's contribution, or Farbsman's or any of the contributions made by team compendium or hey even yours? Yes, you! ... the person reading this post? Do I think Worlds should be an invite only event? OF COURSE I DO! I just feel that not enough is being done to invite those that really should be invited, whether they are "Top 16" or not! Hey, I'd love to go down there, invited, even as a judge, but chances are slim that will happen. So if I can afford to go to one big tournament with my son this year (which we've never been able to do up to this point), the one I'd want to attend would be Worlds. I'd like to say that all our hard work has payed off, and if we can afford to go, we should be able to play. Another possibility that would be great, but chances are it will never happen is this: If Nintendo was really serious about growing the game, they should put 3 things front and center right NOW. They should a) fix up the tournament software. B) Investigate the standings due to an apparent glitch with unreliable tournament reporting and c) get the professor program up and running with benefits for those professors - like invites to Worlds and such, and not just for those that do the most tournaments either because it wouldn't be hard for me to do 2, 3, or even 4 tournaments a week with a player base that is growing to over 60 people now. I'm not sure if my post actually made a point for, or against, invites. But one thing is for sure, that's my rant for the day.

Money isn't an issue for us. I'm not asking for Nintendo to just hand out free admission or travel accomodations. We have all plans to attend the Stadiums/Gyms but for some reason the luck is against us that day and we are willing to make the 10hr drive to Worlds and pay our own accomodations, I just feel we should be allowed a chance at it. My kids/hubby have many medals and battlezone trophys that say they are the BEST!!

I think worlds should be an invite only event. Nintendo will have no way (money, room, prizes, etc.) to accomodate all of the players who want to go and can simply walk-on to the world tournament. I'm not talking about giving out trips, but the sheer amount of people that would show up might be more than they could handle. The very first STS was a complete failure because WOTC failed to account for the number of people that would show up. Besides, everyone has plenty of opportunities to get an invite. If you're truly afraid that you won't win any of the GCs, SCs, or any of the other possible ways to enter, you really shouldn't be going.

I went to the first worlds and I liked the system that was put up. It had a more professional flair to it. It insured that the absolute best players in their age divisions would fight each other. The only grievance I had was that the 15+ got shafted.

Who said Florida players get free entrance? I must have missed the secret meeting of Florida players(sarcasm). The only advantage we have is not having to travel as far to the grinder. And correct me if I'm wrong (which I probably am), but wasn't the last Worlds invite only? Either way, the biggest tournament I've ever been to was a City Championship because I don't have the money for or a ride to the big tournaments, but I don't complain about it. I suck it up and work on going to a future tourney.

I know a player who competed in several GCs and SCs but just couldn't get "over the top" and make it into Worlds in 2002. His family went to Worlds and he was unable to play his way in through the Grinder.

Would have have been beat 4 out of 5 times by one of the Top 16? Absolutely not. Last year he made Top 8 at the FAT and has consistently done great at all the CCs he's attended.

This may be an individualized case of just plain bad luck (not making Worlds in 2002), but the bottom line is that there are some players out there who are "below the radar" who don't make it to Worlds for whatever reason and any thought that they couldn't compete is nothing short of ridiculous.

If I am allowed a rant for the day, it would be that we shouldn't bother giving invites to the top rated players. The great players step up and win the big tournaments. Just showing up at your league week-after-week playing the same old archetype while you beat the same old opponents shouldn't put you in.

(No disrespect to Naught Reeel, I'm sure you've worked hard for your ranking.)

When I said "free entrance" I guess I should have said "an easier entrace" due to their physical location. Let's face it, no matter where you live in Florida, chances are you can get to World's within 6 hours, even with traffic! Please don't tell me if you had the chance to go to an open tournament there, that you wouldn't go! I would gladly give up my time and money to go to Worlds, regardless of where it was if it was within 6 hours of me! To me, if you can get up early and drive to an event, then drive home easily, without putting out for a Hotel, or food if you so desire, or in some cases a rental car, you have it good. And you might as well have said "free" compared to us in the rest of the world.

I understand where your'e coming from. However, we still have to earn our invites like everyone else. I don't remember people complaiining like this when Worlds was in Seattle. And yes, if it was open, I would find a way there to play(I'm probably still going to play the side events), but it isn't and I agree with that decision.

I think that the main tournament is being the focus at this point. There will be other tournaments and events going on. The locals and those of us traveling with others who have invites into the World Champs will amount to quite a large group. For me, Pokemon is about the PEOPLE, not the prizes. It'll be a great place to play Pokemon and relax. If not at the Wyndham, at the other twenty three resorts on WDW property. I sure do hope that we have a few artists though. :)

Wow, this is something. At least we have a worlds to gripe about. Thank you Nintendo. Look at all the stuff they have done already. Prereleases, city and state championships, and now we have gym and stadium challanges. All in the first year. Who remembers Pokmon the Card Games 1st year? Still feeling like complaining?
