Is it fair to make worlds an invite only event??

Pokepop I understood that from the text below, but I can have it wrong.
Do I have to read that every player gets a package for itself and a quest?

In addition to invites, many players will also win travel and accommodations for themselves and a guest (for players under 18 years of age, this guest must be a legal guardian) to the World Championships. Travel awards are awarded as follows:

About the invitations of the World tournament.
I don't think there is an easy way to decide who gets one.
At my club I have 3 very very good players, but because there are not that many tournaments around the country they are facing each other every time at our local ones.
So what happens the best of those 3 almost always wins, and the other 2 win a lot but because of this strong player they don't make into the top 16. Meaby nr2 will later this year because nr1 is going to be 11 than.

Another negative thing of this is that during clubhours, most other players don't want to play anymore against those 3 because they are always winning. So what choise do you have.
We arranged with our 2 clubs that we travel to each other to get them some more competition and also doing weekly tournaments. And Yes those tournaments are sanctioned, they forfill all the rules for being sanctioned (and thats more than what our distributor has to offer). Because doing tournaments is the only way to let those 3 players have opponents. don't tell me I have to force those other players to play against them, because than they will leave and never come back.
All we have is the rankings. We don't get leaguematerials, we are not asked to organize any Premier events. And in case there is a Premier Event they close us out of participation because that PTO doesn't want to get our players the prices.

My point is, my nr1 players will raise into ranking and the other two will stay behind this way and for earning an invitation this doesn't seem fair.
But I will be happy if even 1 gets an invitation, because that's more than we ever count on.
They have only 1 change to participate in a trip+invite tournament and that will be Nationals and because my #1 player gets 11 only 2 days before this event I don't think she will make it.

In case no-one will be good enough to get an invitation, I will travel to Florida, risking a very high fee for taking my kids of of school. But I will be there, hoping to see Mr. Jarrod Nack face to face or any other bobo of PUI/POP.
I hope he will make some time to explain me why I'm so destructive and sabotaging this game. Also I hope he will listen for one time to my arguments, without giving the Distributor all benefits of the doubts. 6 months of OP Nintendo running in this country and NO new league started. No grow beside on our clubs.

Sorry I went off-topic again, for myself I don't need any invitation or whatover it's just for the real heartbeat of this game and those are the current Modified Players overhere.

My reading of that quote is that everyone gets a package for two.

ProfDav, good to hear that a more subjective approach to the rankings will be implemented.

RainbowGym, yah, I've heard there are a few decent NL and Belgium players. My son's two main nemesis (or is it nemesi :) ) in our region have stopped playing Pokemon, so he's alone as the best player in our area. Hopefully, a couple new players will come alone and a couple of the older players will improve. But of course, we ALSO have two of us in the same family that play at a high level, so that helps too. It seems there are quite a few World-level players that come from Pokemon-playing families. I'll probably be taking my son with me to the UT State Championship to see how he plays against non-locals.

Variable K values based upon the number of players or/and number of matches played would make a significant difference.

This approach rewards players for attending larger tournaments and compensates for the fact that at a larger tournament you are more likely to have several strong players swaping ELO points with each other.

K=8: 8 player KO
K=16: 9+ players
K=24: 16+ players with at least 40 matches
K=32: 24+ players with at least 72 matches

The above are just a suggestion.

Bobo, is what we call people who show up at certain event/congresses and doing important but are not that important.
But those are very good bridges to the ones really in charge.

Comprendé ??
BTW We planned our yearly vacation around that time (and in Florida as we do for years) so I only need to extend it to stay for Worlds.

My 2 cents worth ...

World Champs should be just that ... WORLD champs & inviting players is the ONLY way to ensure they get players of the calibre to handle it. ALL players have bad days or even games, but if a player can win a qualifing tournament, they have proved they can handle it on that day.

NOT all Superbowl or World Series winners repeat the form the following year !! Even Michael Jordan & the Bulls lost games, although they are still regarded as 1 of the greatest overall.

The Wizards organized "World Champs" was at best, a joke. The top ranked players from other countries outside of North America only got invites, NO trip offered.

At the time, if you looked at the top 20 DCI ranked players, alot of players were from Mayalsia, yet they didn't get trips. If i remeber correctly, it was 4 of the top 10. Our best was 30th, no invite.

It is good to see PUI has opened this Worlds to the rest of us outside of North America. Sometimes, you players that live in the USA need to remeber, USA is NOT the World !!

I know that New Zealand WILL have a player there & they WILL be competitive. For those that say they're only getting 5 or 6 chances to qualify ... WE only get 1. Be greatful for what you get, we are.

It would be such a good wake up call, to see all of you US players having to applaude the champions, should they not come from USA.

Hopefully, they'll offer trips to us Master Professors as Judges ... that way, i'll get to go as well.

Please keep the US Bashing to your favorite international politics forum.

And here is wishing you a trip to Fla.

On a serious note:

Any players outside the US who think they might have a chance to make the trip should get his/her travel papers etc all in order. If you need time to get Passports etc get them in advance. I have a feeling that as we get closer to the US Presidential Elections terror warnings and travel hassles will get greater.

Wow i only made this is a topic before i found out the true reason its was invite only. I felt it should be invite only after alot of talking and explaining on it from buddies. Im shocked its got 3 pages so far. Im glad and like what came out of it. I hope it keeps goiong.

yeah, its perfectly fair to make worlds invite-only. Its worlds for gosh sake lol. Plus, as others have said, there will be quite a few side event things going on for those that dont' make the cut.

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT SIDE EVENTS BESIDES THE GRINDER THEY WILL HAVE IF ANY?

I guess I am kinda sitting the fence a little on this one. I can see both sides. First, the dates conflict with Gencon. So if you can't seem to get higher than oh 5th, you have to choose go to the grinder or --- go to Gencon and clean up ;-).

I really like the idea of a closed tourny so that distractions by people running around and hoovering and talking - even interfering with the game won't happen. We say that Pokemon is high strategy - even higher than chess but we treat the trournys like a daycare or lunch in the cafeteria and then get defensive when people make fun of Pokemon players.

Now for the other side - Since as pointed out by Mewsmom on any given day a good/best player can go down to a bad draw (like I did in state with one Skitty LOL :-(!!!). or like I did in Gecon during one of the modified tournys played my weakness the first 3 rounds - yuck!! How many of us have been forced to play a family member in the top eight because we were in the same bracket?

Since there are a lot fewer opportunities to get invites maybe a solution could be that a larger amount get invites - for example top 8 in stadium challenges and top 4 in gym challenges. This also could insure families who play together that all players will get a chance to play at worlds not just the one player who won the event. For all the avid players out there - can you imagine a worse day than watching someone else you beat regularly play but you can't play because you were 3rd? The travel could stay the same since the best should get recognition. Also, we all know just because they get an invite it doesn't mean will make it to the event.

A minor gets 2 tickets, an adult winning gets 1 ticket. That makes 3 in that case.
Where there is a will there is a way as the saying goes... so goes Pokemon.

People who cheat and we all know they are out there (whether, intentionally miss playing cards, rigging flips, setting decks, or artificially inflating rankings and yes it is going on!) will always find a way, but as die hard Pokemon players we must ban together. Report rigged tournys!! Always cut your opponents deck when they touch it!! Know the cards and the rulings!! My only suggestion is that all flips be determined by roling a 20 side dice it is much harder to "rig" than coins or six sided dice.

If we hold fast GOOD/FAIR players will always prevail :D .

Just my two cents.
