Is the Pokemon TCG dying?

If you or someone else made a post about you being a professor, he could have read that post.

There hasn't been a single post on any Pokemon forum about me being a Professor other than the one I just made. He's looking nicknames up. Say Godwin's Law all you like, intimidation tactics are being used on VOLUNTEERS (not employees) here. Looking up data is (or should be!) an absolute no-no.

I can't believe a question like this went unadmonished apart from something along the lines of, "Use emoticons next time, :)."

This. It's just straight-up bullying.

There's a disciplinary committee?!
Yeah I don't believe that. Or if there is one, it wasn't used in my case. When the heat in our argument started, he handed out the ban almost immediately, which I thought was rather harsh considering this was one e-mail conversation on one day AND the contents were not THAT bad considering other posts people have made against TPCi in the past. In fact, a lot of what was in the e-mail is what I've been talking about now. I even asked him who made the decision to ban me (Was it just you?) and he never told me, which makes me wonder if he did consult anyone. If he consulted a "team" of people than it was a quick and thoughtless decision (surely fueled by my website work). In going back and reviewing the e-mails with some people from my forum, we also found a lot of contradictions in what he said, so my trust in what he says is very shaky. :/ He seems like the type who SAYS something, then goes back and tries to make an excuse for it being something else ("it wasn't a threat, honest!").

I've also just received a PM from someone who stated they had problems with Biggie in behind-the-scenes exchanges. I'm sure there's others out there too. :/

It sounds like you're subtly hinting that you are dissapointed with your correspondence with the head of POP. ;) It's okay, I was too - you chose the "I'll agree with him just so I don't lose my position path" and I chose the more argumentative path, resulting in my ban.
Common Jon, don't take me wrong. I'm always up for a good banter. In the end, I expressed a desire to sit down to have a Coke with Biggie, though he's a Pepsi guy. Perhaps we'll have a friendly disagreement about which soft drink is better. :thumb:

But unlike your dad's situation, this is a hobby game and we can actively voice our opinions about our "boss" (that is, if we're not banned in the process). But I think if more people show some "tisk tiskness" toward his behavior, we can see some changes. Because right now he definitely has not set a good impression in my eyes for only being here a few months. Even though Mike Liesik disliked me and my site, I still had great respect for him (as I do Dave). But this guy is sort of mean, which is not good for a children's TCG game IMHO. :(
I beg to differ. In a sense, professors are compensated for their advocacy. With that compensation comes some obligation to follow higher standards -- in our case, the Core Values.

Additionally, if your boss is harsh, you learn to deal with it or leave. Although not always a valid argument, the "deal with it or leave" statement is often suitable when working with a harsh boss.

These "boss" analogies are so tilting.

Unlike many of you, not once have I ever considered POP my "boss" - it is a business partner and occasionally a friend, but never my "boss." Even in my capacity as a Professor I haven't, because our relationship is at-will and mutually beneficial: I promote their product, and they supply me with a reason to do so.

There is no "superior" or "inferior" unless you allow it.

One final comment about harsh bosses. In my brief encounter with harsh comments from Biggie, I felt we both came out with a better understanding of each other.

Harsh bosses accomplish two main goals: 1) weed out the non-conformers (those who can't/won't support the mission goals), and 2) inspire the remaining to accomplish the mission goals, and more.

I will not pass judgement on anyone who has been banned or who might harshly try to mold me. We all make choices about who we'll be and who we'll follow.

Not so tilting that the analogy won't fit. After we take the test, TPCi decides if they'll take us or not (just like a job interview and hiring). So long as we continue to work and comply, no problems (we get compensated). TPCi and PTOs give us our "marching orders" -- they task us (just like our bosses assign us our tasks).

And, "inferior" is the wrong term. Use subordinate instead. Superiors hire, assign tasks, and compensate their subordinates. Is that not what happens in the Professor-TPCi/PTO relationship?

For the record I agree with this. I'm not anyone’s "boss".

Apparently a couple folks have decided that attacking my character is more important than being entirely honest about the circumstances or content of my conversations with them. I have to admit that I'm a bit caught off guard by the tactics being used in this thread but I'm not going to stoop to a he said she said on this. For those who decide to blame me rather than take responsibility for their own actions, I'm afraid that your opinion of me is unlikely to change anytime soon. For those who want to discuss things maturely whether it is to seek assistance or offer criticism, you will find me very accessible.

Would you mind elaborating on what "tactics?" I don't see any tactics at all - all I did was describe what you did, such as somehow looking up someone's name and posting it and things like that. Those aren't really debatable considering they happened. If you're referring to our e-mail exchange, I also don't see how anything I said was inaccurate. As I said multiple times in the thread, I did misbehave in the e-mail, but you were a little too harsh yourself. Unfortunately it ended the way it did and here we are. Like I said, I wasn't any angel either, but it was one e-mail convo on one day. And if you want to talk more about this, I have no way of contacting you other than posting a message like this. If you're willing you can e-mail me at [email protected].

I want to go back to the original post.

It was interesting that the OP said nothing about attendance.

I can't speak for other places, but Heidi's tournaments here in Florida have been up in attendance from last year. And I suspect the other tournaments in Florida have seen the same growth.

I think the lack of information about Nationals is almost coincidental.

Well since you are already banned from being a prof, why dont you divulge the full content of those emails and let us judge.

And to all the problems people have with Mr Biggie. Instead of snapping on each other. Why dont you file a formal complaint to his boss. If he is fully backed by those above him then well thats that. But i think if enough people have problems they will at least look into the problems.

I personally dont agree with the stuff Biggie has been pulling over the last few months. But i feel that he is doing it in good faith and we really dont have a reason to attack him personally.

You know games are dieing when you dont see anything official for quite a while, just throwing that out there...

Pyrot: Right or wrong, WPM or Biggie shouldn't be making the contents of a private email conversation public here. Even if I felt I was completely right, you're just asking for a bad Stormfront.

Cyrus: spoken Like a Boss. Really though, good call. I feel like the difficulty is that people have a much higher cost of switching (economics) than PUSA does. The value in keeping one professor or not is very marginal. The difference between PUSA supporting one professor vs another is very different from you choosing to play Pokemon as a Professor or Magic as a Guru (is that even a used term anymore?) or judge. I also think that Pokemon knows this.

Gorn: I think its difficult to figure out if Pokemon is growing in an aggregate sense based on personal experience, even if we have a large number of people reporting into the gym on it. In part, we're very unlikely to get a relevant proportion of people posting that they skipped an event, or know X people who quit. They likely don't have a sufficiently high investment level (emotionally) in the game at that point to post about it, or even read the thread.

Sorry but any party can make the contents of the emails public. There is no expectation of privacy. There already is a bad stromfront lets at least get some truth out of it.

WPM give us proof.

Ha ha ha, I calmly discussed the issue with you over the course of a few days without you ever seeing any good in what I had done for the program; you chose to choose only to see the negative in what happened. We discussed the situation maturely and I still ended up getting nowhere. I took responsibility for my actions in how my Professorship was removed (even if it WAS in good faith providing kids cheaper packs at half price) and apologized for selling packs in a card shop. You still have yet to tell me how long it lasts.

I don't see anyone using tactics here. What we all see is that you made an off color remark regarding a concerned player's Professor status for losing a bit of faith in the company while providing some legitimate reasons for why. I've been to the professor forums, and posted two problems there....NEITHER were/have been resolved. I had to personally take care of one of them. Professors do a LOT for the brand and for players. Removing their status for small reasons that aren't hurting anyone is pointless. In my instance, there wasn't an issue until you made it an issue. In this case with Psychoflood, he's not doing anything that negatively reflects the Professor Program. If you wanted to, you could find information on EVERY Professor that would show something anti-company image.

WPM give us proof.

E-mailing an official with a complaint is 100% private, which is why WPM e-mailed instead of posting on a message board.

"There is no expectation of privacy"? You couldn't be any more wrong.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME

There is no legal reason why WPM could not post this. He dint sign anything saying he wouldnt disclose anything(i assume). He is not Biggies lawyer, doctor, spouse, or spiritual advisor. He has ZERO obligation or responsibility to keep it private.

Please think before you post. And condider not only your "morals" but also the other aspects that can be used to determine if an action is right or wrong.

There is indeed no legal reason at all why WPM could not post it. Keyword legal.

When you e-mail someone with an official complaint, it is good form to keep the contents of said e-mail private. Breaching that implicit expectation is a breach of trust, and could also lead to WPM being kicked out of OP.

Please think before you post yourself. I could care less whether what is going on is good or bad, right or wrong. I'm not the kind of person who thinks it matters whether justice is served or not, or feels a duty in life to strive for good. I have no sense of morality here, in fact I am quite curious as to the actual words in the e-mail. It is something, however, that we as third parties have no business in viewing, and have no right to view. In this debate, we as uninvolved parties have no rights, nor importance. In fact, if something happens that you or I think is 'wrong', such as Biggie's alleged conduct, it does not matter! We may as well turn a blind eye, for whatever injustices take place, it is none of our business and we should not try to interfere, just or unjust.

That said, players who are not professors should be allowed to criticize the brand as much as they want, and not be jumped on by a "Disciplinary Committee". If you were to punish your customers for saying your new product sucks or complaining about official inaction, that would be stooping very low. I have my complaints about how quickly professors are shut up, but I as a player and not a professor should feel total security from my computer as I slander TPCi. (This is 100% hypothetical however! :p)

um...there's a time and place for everything, even criticism: people seem to be forgetting the *private* professor-only forums POP has set up.

i'd dare say that constructive criticism is more than welcome there as it's a direct means of communication with OP.

I think what he was saying is when did posting a comment on PokeGym, which has the 'The PokéGym is not affiliated with Pokémon USA, Inc. or any anime or video game companies..' disclamer on every page, become something of an 'official capacity'? By that disclamer alone it makes it ALL non official. It isn't an event, it isn't (supposedly) associated with the Company, and it is something done in your leisure time. Just because you have the Professor logo under your name doesn't make every word you type something done in an official capacity. Personally, I asked for the Professor logo because I am proud to be a Professor not because everything I say is 'official'.

There are some comments (1st hand experience) which do deserve getting your hand slapped or worse, but something as innocent as *yawn* when voicing your opinion over a couple of frankly boring cards isn't (or shouldn't be, in my opinion) one of them. Neither should making a post voicing your concerns from your previous experience with other games that died and not wanting the same to happen to this one. What I took from the OP was that he loves this game and hopes it isn't dying, and that in case it was wanted to thank those whose tireless efforts have brought it to us these many years. The wording could have been a little different, but the intent was very plain. To be admonished or threatened for those fears... well I'll keep that private if... somebody... wishes to ask.

Is anyone having a state championships near them that hasn't had one previously? Or that had one for the first time last year? Europe chime in too, with the equivalent.

Dan, I know we're in a cloud of yet, but is there anything you can forecast for us?

Three things tell us what to do:
Morals, Ethics, and Values

Values would be what WPM personally believes he should or shouldn't do.
Morals are more tied to social values and acceptances of good and bad.
Ethics are a system of morals. Sometimes, special ethics apply to professionals or members of certain groups.

You are correct that WPM is none of those things to Biggie (then again, it would make the entire thing more entertaining if he was Biggie's spiritual advisor). Still though, at some point Spirit of the Game acts on WPM's ethics, as does his special status within the community demands that WPM be respectable in terms of privacy. I post not because I believe I'll sway you Pyrot, just because I wanted a clear response to your desire to cause a problem.
