Mega Pokemon Mechanic revealed

There was that brief period after the 2011 rotation but before Catcher was released where the format was loaded with stage 1 decks. That was a nice time.

The Nationals format with only 5 legal sets? My son won Juniors with our rogue deck. 5 evolution lines in that thing! (I played the same list, lost in Top 32 game 3, due to being a noob).

When people say they want evolutions played I think they also mean playing more than one or possibly 2 with a bunch of EX support too.

BTW (spoilers just in case) in the video game it does the Mega-Evolution AND attack in the same turn.

Also in the video game we have these Megas...

I seriously worry about how much a full playset of a Mega+the EX it evolves from will cost, if the megas aren't deck-limited.

I would imagine the mega evolutions will run just as lvl x's did. So you can only run 3 EX and 1 Mega evolution if you want a solid build. Or maybe even 2-2. So the price wouldn't be outrageous imo. Just like having a playset of ex's

Depends upon how to define "outrageous" for a TCG card. The physical TCG card is not that expensive to manufacture and distribute. Of course, the overhead costs of the industry are applied on top of that... but given how many cards are produced that cost gets spread reasonably thin. So for me, once a card hits double digits (USD), it is too expensive. Most cards before that. I do make allowances for cards that are not really intended (or at least required) for play - a Super Special Awesome chase card that has a more mundane counterpart.

Also consider that tin promos are the only thing keeping cards like Darkrai and Keldeo out of the 50+ dollar range. Unless tins include both the EX and the mega, then one of the two won't have the luxury of promo deflation.

(from Pokebeach.com) Pokemon.com has announced that the XY TCG set will include 2 Mega Evolution Pokemon (Blastoise and Venusaur), 6 Pokemon-EX, and over 140 cards.

Mega Evolution Pokemon will evolve from Pokemon-EX. Evolving into a Mega Evolution ends your turn immediately, but Mega Evolution cards will have even harder-hitting attacks and higher HP than Pokemon-EX.
I wonder if this will increase the usage of Raticate's Super Fang attack (+ Laser Bank) that could then KO that Mega Evolution immediately after it enters into play? Lol.

That would be hilarious.

I have taken that into consideration as well. It would be crazy to think we would still be chasing after those cards. We would be seeing decks with a cost of $200+ with ease.

LOL if mega evolutions get big I'm totally playing golurk (devolution punch)/raticate just to troll XD

Granted, the rest of the metagame may make that a bad idea. I mean, of the four Pokémon-EX we've seen for X&Y... meet the new boss, same as the old boss: those that will be getting Mega Evolutions are poor, but only for Pokémon EX, with one that will depend on Fairy Type support and Yveltal EX actually looks very good (great if we were to get Energy Switch back). Legendary Treasures already has confirmed reprints for Darkrai EX, Mewtwo EX, and Tornadus EX.

So... I am really expending Mega Evolution decks to have plenty of fall back Basic beatsticks.

Now had ExoByte not chimed in on it, I too would have assumed the announcement just used the wrong terminology.

Pokemon is very careful about their terminology. I would never make that assumption.

Got a look at M Venusaur EX, and good lord! 230 hp is like whoa. This doesn't keep it from being KOed but it's just nuts. It's attack is a bit pricey, however, it's effect and damage is good. 120 + Poison and Paralysis makes it decent.

+50 HP feels right. Some people were saying like +70 or more, but that would have merited another prize card I think.

I really don't know who is going to be comfortable mega-evolving mid-game and losing a chance to attack. This will be interesting.

The Mega mechanic is a real problem; the game already has issues that cause significant imbalance, and now this just adds something else to try and balance out. The good news is, if all Mega EX Pokémon are like M Venusaur EX, we don't have to worry about them being overpowered; this thing looks pretty terrible.

+50 HP... when if anything, HP scores across the board need to be two to three times larger. You've got +50 HP in exchange for having an extra turn of vulnerability (unless Mega Evolutions violate normal first turn Evolution rules). We have a format where guaranteed Paralysis isn't guaranteed, so that may not be functionally broken... or even competitive. If Fire decks find their groove, then this will be in even more trouble. Imagine if RayBoar takes hold - a regular Reshiram can OHKO this card!
