3 x recover energy

My son want to play Gyarados at states, alot of people are saying it is a bad idea. But unfortunately that does not matter. He is still going to play it. I can suggest different things for him, but I am not sure if anything else can be done. The strategy is easy evolve into Gyarados and with Unown P, you put 1 damage on him, Rainbow puts another damage and Galacitc HQ puts 2 damage on him. So basically T1 or T2 you are hitting for 70 with Flail that is with the Dragon DNA +30 to the damage. I have recover energy in there incase they put him under a status effect. I put 1 SF Gyarados, but have not yet seen him play it in over 2 dozen play testing. So I may take it out. It is for a late in the game comeback. He has only lost once in the 2 dozen or so play testing and that was against Leaftile played by a master. Any suggestions?

oh oh! i have a suggestion! ummm i think you should take out 1 scoop up and 1 galactic hq for 1 broken time space for evolving right away. and you need one more roseannes for searching for uxie and suicune

Some suggestions.

You don’t have enough basics here. With 4 of 9 basics he has a really high probably of starting with a lone Karp and then loosing T1 or T2. I would suggest running at least 13 basics here mostly to avoid donks.

Some things that might help the deck:

3 or 4 Unown R ... increases basic count and gives you a source of extra draw at the same time.

1-2 Unown G … Technical Machine TS2 Devoluter is like Kryptonite to Gyardos. G helps protect vs both that and status effects from attacks.

2-2 Claydol … it’s a standard and for good reason, though you do have plenty of draw here.

1-1 Cresselia lv. X … it’s better than Unown P over the course of a game, though not as fast T1.

4 Poke Drawer + … they are good and fast

+2 Basic Water Energy. Searchable energy is good. These are also the only energy you can Night Maint back.

Some things that I wonder if they are really helping you:

3 Rare Candy. I get that T1 Gyardos is good, but what are the odds of having both Rare Candy and a dos in hand T1. If you really want to do the T1 route you should have 4 candy and 4 Poke Drawer +.

1 Suicune … she will be the target of Power Spray a lot.

3 Recover Energy … these are pretty good against Skuntank G … but the reality is they will just poison you again the following turn unless you get a stadium out.

The rare candies Are really good in this deck. I would say this is borderline unplayable without it. This looks like a good deck but if gengar gets too popular you might want an unown g to guard your unown p.

Cresselia is nice, but he only moves damage around, with Unown P I have the ability to put damage on Gyarados right away.

my new deck list

4 Magikarp MT
3 Gyarados MT
1 Gyarados SF
2 Unown G
2 Unown P
2 Uxie (maybe a 2-2 claydol if so I would get rid of the Pachirisu
1 uxie Lv X
1 Pachirisu (great against SP decks you smash short them for 40 and get rid of tools

1 galactic HQ
2 Broken Time Space
2 SSU
2 Night Maintenance
3 rare candy
3 plus power
2 memory berry
1 luxury
4 bebes
3 roseannes
3 pokedex
3 bucks
3 prof oak visit, (maybe pokedrawer, but not sure what to take out for a 4th)

4 water
4 rainbow
4 call

What age division is your son in? That will help to tell how competitive this deck will be.

Mmm..seniors.

If you added a 2-2 Claydol line to this, or even 1-1 with Azelf it would help it alot. I think with Dol, this could be a contender.

I have played with these varients and have done some deck testing.

Rare Candy is essential! Broken Time Space could help this deck as well, although the Galactic Hdqtrs is more valuable than the unown Ps.

I also ran the lightning Magnezone where you could get energy out of the discard onto Dos, It worked pretty well, especialy now that you have rainbow energies.

Don't waste your time with the SF Dos, it under performs.

While you think it might be counter intuitive, Poke healer works very nice in the deck. It is more reliable than the SSUs, can keep your Dos around longer and that is the point. I do have an adversion to SSU so take that with a grain of salt.

You need the unown Gs unfortuantely as devolver is always fatal.

You need lots of basic pokemon because a karp start is very bad, and what are your other choices?
an unown P, G, and Uxie are generaly bad starts, so a starter like Pachi or Chatot is essential. I would go with 3 Uxie's BTW, it is a very good card, and the LvlX if you can afford 1. In general starter pokemon have fallen out of favor in the speed decks of recent months, but this deck needs one.

I have the same issue with my son, I know Dos is not the most uber deck out there, but I think it can be league competitive. The most important part is to have fun and I think that is the fun of developing a "good" deck with a favorite pokemon.

I know someone who runs the Ducks PL with
the Gyarydos SF! It works quite nicely, you
can stall with the ducks, attach a few energies,
then attack for 60 move energies to G-dos and
free retreat hit for 100!
