Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

NoVA gets Virginia States! March 8, 2008

Hey Sandslash7, I was hoping to meet you. Remember me, from last years Pokegym Birthday Trivia Contest (we helped each other out...)? Sorry you couldn't make it! Maybe we will make it up again sometime for another tournament.

We came up from Florida, and it was a very interesting day, to say the least. Met lots of very nice folks and made some new friends. I want to especially congratulate Johnny who made top 8 cut in Masters and Jacob who made top 4 cut in Seniors and his mom Angie. Johnny, you are one top notch guy and it was great to meet you! Jacob, you got that trophy you wanted, way to go! PM me if you want so we can stay in touch.

David Tuskey, the PTO, is a nice guy too. Thanks for having us. It was nice to meet you.

Indeed, I do remember.

I would have liked to meet you, it's always a pleasure to talk to someone from the 'Gym in real life.

Maybe Nationals or something! (that's my hope that I can go.)

Well considering how awful my unprepared deck is in the current metagame, I did awsome.(4-2) AND I walked away with a "massive" Dialga model. (raffle prize) Also met a few peeps, and played some DS. 8-player single card Mario Kart F.T.W. It was also nice to that I never had to play any G&Gs.
Nintales1234, I heard that my brother beat you. That means something is terribly wrong. Hey Johnny, what place did ya make?

Mini-report! I play Gatr.

4-2 in swiss, I make it in as the highest 4-2 (6th seed). I had really legit matches all throughout swiss this time, so I definitely earned both of those losses. GGs all around. (I'm good at burn flips. ;x)

In T8 I play Pram, I get fantastic setups throughout the series. He misses the energy drop T1 in the first game, but Candies into Claydol T2 to start rolling (that was game one, right?). I have everything, though, so he scoops pretty quickly. He sets up nicely in the second and pulls it out, sending it to game three? Bad memory. In G3 he starts poorly and I aggro Breaking Tail to win. I was really quite lucky to draw what I did in each of those three games, and Mike was a great sport all things considered.

In T4 I play Alex, who ran Blissey/Delcatty (BDIF for Battle Roads Week 1 YESSS). He gets off to the deck's typical blazing start in G1 while I sac a few guys trying to find stuff. I don't get out Claydol until the endgame, but I manage to find a couple Gatrs to get me through to the end. He burned a lot of Boosts early, so my Gatrs were safe from everything except Delcatty ex coming down the home stretch. Eventually he's forced to put it up, and I get the energy I need to knock it out for my last two prizes. Game 2 he doesn't draw quite as well. He gets up a Blissey pretty fast, but I'm somehow able to one-shot it and from there I Breaking Tail basics and take the game. GGs.

The finals came down to 1 game, really. Luke and I aren't the fastest players in the world. It was a knock down, drag out fight. I get up two Claydols, but he snipes them both with only a turn between. Luke makes a killer play with a Firestarter Blaziken to go from 4-3 prizes to 2-3 prizes. Eventually it comes down to 1-1, but Luke can't get a KO, so he puts up a clean Blaziken GE and passes to me. I've got a huge hand from a Copycat last turn, but my Claydols were dead, and I couldn't Steven's Advice. My other Copycat would have netted me only three cards. I have the Warp Point to get Blaze out of there, but I am one energy shy of the $300. Oh well. My luck had to run out some time. (Seriously.)

Sweets:
- Steven, Peter, Mohawk and Andriy (please forgive me if I butchered your name, or got it wrong altogether) for the stuff I needed. You guys rock out loud.
- Awesome venue.
- Pretty good-sized attendance.
- Judges for giving it to me straight about my slow pacing. It's definitely something I need to work on - your words won't fall on deaf ears.
- Some great Gatr vs Mortar matches. A 50/50 matchup is always good fun.
- My burn flips.
- Alex top cutting with a Blissey deck.
- I only had to face two Gardys on the day.
- The winners (Luke, Philip, Mohawk... Mohawk did win JRs, didn't he?)
- Finals playlist!
- Taco Bell to the rescue
- Great sportsmanship all around.
- Going and picking up Super Smash Bros Brawl after the tournament, HECK YEAH!
- Team X-Files
- Gatr for being a freakin' fun deck choice and a legit States pick all at once.
- Dan for the ride up and back

Sours:
- Dan going 2-4.
- Dave going 2-3 drop.
- "You know, if you scoop to me, we both make top cut..." (This is twice in a row you've said something like that in Round 6, dude.)
- Painful, gnawing stomach(e) ache hitting me right after my T8 match.
- DON'T RUN THAT RED LIGHT! ;/
- Thinking; "That's not why I come to Pokemon tournaments!"
- Me for stopping the finals from being that awful Mortar mirror, I guess?
- Nothing good in my packs (whine whine whine)
- Hurricane

EDIT: Andriy PMed me and reminded me that it is his Pachirisu that I still have.

Wow, I've finally recovered from Saturday (pity my students, folks!!) A HUGE thank you to Shannon Doyen, the lady in charge of renting out the Community Center, for allowing us to use the facility. Hey, PUI, this was a REGIONAL quality facility and I think all players will agree. Mary Ivie found the site for me, plus she saved my voice by getting the PA system. Oh, yeah, she also arranged for the Girl Scouts to be there and the vendor as well.... face it, the lady WORKS like crazy! Mary, it was what it was because of YOU! I am forever grateful. To my staff and judges, Jav, Chris, Pam C, Kimberly, Tim and Timothy, the Princess--you are all amazing people who must be nuts to put up with me. We will need a bigger staff next year; if anyone in the area is interested please let me know around Jan!!
My wife Pam continues to amaze me with her supporting me in this thing--I love you, honey!!
This was now my second States as a PTO and I still remember that day I got our first WoTC 2-player starter set thinking, "Hmmm, this might be fun"..HaHa, and so began the slope toward doom!! Congrats to the winners, the losers, and those who showed up for the first time ever! Thanks to the locals, and (all) of the travelers.

I truly hope you guys had as much fun as I did!!! Thank you PUI/POP for an amazing opportunity!

Hmmm....sucking up after forgetting to mention her in the opening announcements huh? jk jk.

Azure_Kite beat me to the comment  .

What a massive event. I've never worked so hard for the comp given in my life. We should have asked for a raise - not like totoro could have said no and risk judging 130 people by himself  ). I thought there'd be more pictures. I forgot my camera but I wouldn't have had time to take any pictures anyway.

Props:
The judges
The runners
The girl scouts
The coordinator of the community center, Shannon Doyen.
Mary for finding the place

Slops:
The pizza being late
The early judges meeting

You call him "Mohawk"?

... plus she saved my voice by getting the PA system.
As I was shouting the time announcements -_-

... you are all amazing people who must be nuts to put up with me. We will need a bigger staff next year;
I was tricked. j/k. Yes, bigger staff.

Some things to clear up:
There was some confusion about when you do and do not have to say how much damage you are doing. If your attack isn't going to KO a Pokemon, you must say how much damage you are doing; if your attack is going to KO a Pokemon, you must say how much damage you are doing. Any questions?

On this:
- "You know, if you scoop to me, we both make top cut..." (This is twice in a row you've said something like that in Round 6, dude.)
This is an example of bribery as defined in Tournament Rules:
Tournament Rules 12.3. Bribery said:
Any form of compensation offered with the intention of altering the outcome of a match or persuading a player to concede at any point before or during the match is considered a bribe.
If the judge thinks you were just playing, maybe you'll slide with unsporting conduct: major (game loss in T2), but you could end up trying to talk yourself out of disqualification under Penalty Guidelines 7.6.4. Cheating .
