Origins - no WOTC or Upper Deck?

GenCon Indy has really become a big deal for Wizards and Upper Deck.

Overall, Origins is slightly less attractive IMO. Wizards used to have a large hand in things, but the difference between GenCon and Origins is that one is stagnant. How many other Origins have you seen around the world? None, GenCon boasts two in the United States and two in Europe.

A quick look at the GenCon website compaired with the Origins website shows a difference in who looks more like a legitimate buisness. The Origins website has been altered SO many times in the past few years and with each new design there are still flaws. It looks like an amature's job,

I really wish Nintendo would figure some way to move Nationals GenCon. It's a much better event. The timing is all messed up though.

Maybe we should ask parents of these 14 and under players - what keeps you away from Pokemon Nationals at Origins?
a) scary 15+ people in costumes
b) distance
c) money
d) time conflict
e) event size

When I inform players about local tournaments, it isn't the kind of people who are going to be there, it is how far away it is. Distance will most likely be your highest reason.

Next, ask parents if they are more willing to take their kids to an all-pokemon event of the same distance (like, if Worlds was not invitation-only).

What I'm getting at is that parents are not going to travel a long distance only to play Pokemon, especially on a national level since it is assumed that the competition will be harder. It's going to be roughly the same attendance that makes an appearance at Origins.

On another note, why is WotC and Upperdeck not making an appearance at Origins? Not even a booth?

You want proof, check out the City Champ bag...how many 15+ went "oooh" over that.
I went "oooh" over the City Champ bag. ._. It is teh 1337ness. I could do without the Beach Pokeball though. ;/

Me too!!! I want those beachballs!!!

Wonder why? Come see the REALLY COOL "Catch 'em all" game at the Mississippi Valley Regionals...

Hint: You can choose to be the Pokemon or the Trainer and there will be prizes for the best of BOTH!!!

Pokeball GO!!

Man, just one of 3 big games coming at my Regional!!!

It will be MUCH MORE than a Pokemon Tournament - I assure you all...

BIG announcement coming next week!!!

I have two. If you have more, then you can play dodge Ball with them. (Not the Hardcore Style Dodge Ball)

If you go to Origins' website, click to events and look at card games, here is what you will find:

"Twenty years ago, a card game was something played with a poker deck, and was probably named (if not poker) Canasta or Euchre, Cribbage or Spades or Hearts. Today, we know better. A card game today must have color, complexity… if it doesn’t have boosters and expansions and world-class art work, it’s not a REAL card game! And Origins has almost every card game out there, from Magic: The Gathering™ to Yu-Gi-Oh!™"

Origins is either too lazy to change last year's text copy and didn't much care about Pokemon then; or Origins is deceitful towards the casual web browser this year and doesn't care at all about Pokemon now.

That's my read on things anyway. Maybe I missed the multiple pages lauding the glory of Pikachu.

My vote: make Nationals, like Worlds, a movable event.

Thanks,

John

just cuz the that guy says that there wont be wotc or upper deck dosent mean there wont be tournements for the games. Any one can sanction a tournement and hold it any where. Having a large gameing convention is the perfect spot for alot of ppl to hold big tournements. For any of you that play magic there are still going to be ptq's. And for VS there should be a pcq.

I asked about WOTC and Upper Deck on the Origins web site. Here's the response...

It is true that Wizards of the Coast has decided to forego attending Origins 2006 in an official capacity. However, there will be no lack of WOTC, Hasbro, or related events at the show. In fact, due to the way the RPGA rules work, Origins will actually be able to provide some rather unique opportunities for many RPGA fans.

Wizards of the Coast has expressed nothing but good wishes and support for our efforts, and we wish them well in their endeavors in 2006.

Negotiations continue with Upper Deck, and we are hopeful that they will be present at the show.

I'll take all the beach Poke-balls anyone wants to get rid of.

Anyways, I have found yet another great reason to keep Nationals at Origins this year. I have received a piece of mail from GAMA offering free admission for those never been to origins with the purchase of a person's full weekend admission who has been to Origins. This is a great opportunity for us to bring in a stronger base of Pokemon Players and make it more of a dominant game in the entire hobby gaming community.
