Points Required to Qualify for the World Championships: 500 CP for Masters? WHAT!

What effect this all might have upon players attitude towards POP has yet to be seen as the tournament year hasn't started anywhere other than in Germany.
Or you could, y'know, just listen to what the community is saying. Has anyone been in favor of this decision? Some people don't view it very negatively, but I haven't really seen anyone who's thinking is along the lines of "Finally! Only 7ish players get CP invites!". I agree with the idea that expecting the points to be reduced later in the season is a bad idea.

In my opinion raising the amount of CP needed for the Worlds invite is an excellent choice. The number of players in the Worlds this year rose about 2/3 when compared to the number of players a year before which in my opinion means that getting to the Worlds was really easy when compared to the years before. So by raising the amount of CP needed the number of players in the Worlds will hopefully fall to the levels of previous years. 500CP might be a little too much but we will see the reality of the situation at the end of the season.

But by that time, it's too late - decisions by players will have been made. We need to see if it is worth it to travel extra before we do, not do extra travel and hope for the best.

I honestly thought that a larger worlds was a much more enjoyable experience. Seniors and masters had a top 32 for the first time in a while and worlds was a lot cooler with more people. Just, because more people made worlds doesn't mean it is any less prestigious to be there.

A couple of people said it will be "too late" at some point. We don't know when TPCi would make a forecast based on CP earnings so far, but I suspect a natural point is after Cities, for both TPCi and Players. Here's why.

Fall Regionals is coming. People will likely still go to their closest one, and the only decision is whether it is worth it to travel for another one. I suspect that choice will be considered the same whether the Worlds bar is 400 CP, 450 CP, or 500 CP. It's just so soon in the season, that anyone would try to get whatever points they could as early as possible.

Next we have Cities. I suppose people will only be able to go to the ones around their area, or maybe a remote marathon just like they did before. Not a big difference there either in choosing how to plan for travel.

At that point, it's possible to see how well your season is doing so far, and whether it is worth it to travel to the remaining States and Regionals to try to earn an invitation. Likewise, TPCi and see how many players have earned how many points so far, to see if the goal has to be lowered.

I think that's a reasonable expected timeframe for both sides to get more information on how this year will go. Short of that, I hear players saying "well, I had a chance of getting 400, but no way can I get 500! I'm not even going to play!" Aside from Jay Hornung, I haven't seen anyone with the confidence or proven ability to be able to predict they can even get 400. So IMO the best you can do is see how well your season starts, and then make a choice somewhere along the way.

I was actually considering playing this year, but if all the regulars are saying that 500 is a crazy amount, I definitely can't afford to play this year.

500 is a crazy amount but lots of players will manage it. There is a strange psychology at play here. Lots of players are happy to believe that they can make Top 30 but are less confident when that is translated into a fixed bar. Why might this be the case? My guess is that Top 30 is something you can't plan for whereas it is possible to speculate how anyone can achieve 500 points without world championship points to assist.

Inconsistent as in minors are not allowed computer access for 6 hours straight.

I think it's much easier for a minor to gain access to a computer than it is to convince their parents to spend $2000+ to get them and their family across the country for a tournament... If a minor already has a great tournament record supported by their parent's finances and acceptance of their hobby, then they would have no problem being on the computer for a tournament already.

If it truly were a Top 30, less people would be complaining. Unfortunately, it's more like a Top 10; the other 20 or so earn automatic invitations from Worlds or Nationals. When the bar is set that high, most won't even bother to reach for it.

Personally I've earned an invitation to Worlds 9 of the past 10 years, and I don't think I'll be making the effort this year. Even as an experienced player who loves the game to death, I don't feel like trying to get 500 CP is worth my time.

Actually, I believe the Play Pokemon representative that posted in this thread said after Nationals.

I don't think either are likely. I am supported by my parents but would never be allowed online for that long. Many parents like the social aspect of the game, which isn't as prominent online. Yes - there is a chat box. It's not face-to-face conversation though ("Oh you can use Skype" -people, ...so everytime you have an opponent you'll ask them, a stranger, to download skype and face chat? Umm no.)

I am still strongly hoping TPCi thinks better of this decision and makes an adjustment. The posts here are just a fraction of those I've seen on Facebook groups saying how disappointed they are in this decision and will now likely not play as much. I'm not sure there has been a more negative reaction in the community to a Pokemon announcement, especially one that doesn't seem to be about money. (My personal reason for accepting changes such as reduction of regionals prizes in past years, though of course the masters finally saw a nice change to that this year). Obviously we can't have an infinitely large worlds, nor should we, but TPCi clearly swung the pendulum too far with this one. TPCi needs to think about the trickle down effects of having one single year-long goal premier event, and making it so difficult that players must travel enormous amounts and still get lucky to achieve that goal.

I'd personally keep worlds at 200 masters. Get rid of this 'only top 2 on Sunday' stuff, it's a waste of time that could be used on making a better, longer tournament. We can have a large worlds, with 2/3 swiss, and I think players would absolutely love it.

To be honest, if this was the first year you were going to play, you weren't likely to have made 400 CP either, so what difference does it make not hitting 500 CP vs not hitting 400 CP?
The majority of players don't make 400 CP or 500 CP and yet they play, year after year.
They play the Pokemon TCG because they enjoy playing the Pokemon TCG.

If you were going to start playing this year, go ahead and start playing.

I would like to see Championship points go away. I think they have been a mistake. I would like it if the winners of major events got the Worlds invites. T2 in Regionals and T16 at Nationals. Instead of 9 weeks of regionals I would prefer to have super regionals where there are like 5 all on the same day in different parts of the Country and T4 from there could get invites as well. 40 regional invites 20 Super regionals invites and 16 from Nationals.
LC - Regionals - Cities - Regionals - States - Super Regionals - Nationals - Worlds.

While not endorsing the exact invites proposed, this is the best idea. I have always hated all of the past structures because they come down to playing and traveling too much for our family. The marathons were fun the first time, now they are a really stupid reason to give up family time during Christmas. I just don't want to give up my hard earned vacation time grinding points for Pokemon.

Last year my son missed his 400 essentially because we could not do the cities marathons or lots of BRs (352 cp, 3rd regional, 1st states, T32 nationals, plus more). The year before he was 41st on resistance, and would have finished in low 30s if we went to spring BRs every weekend.

I don't mind traveling for big tournaments in moderation (3 regional plus national no problem), but setting this up to force extra regionals travel goes backwards in a keep up with the joneses problem. What happens if there are too many invites because people begin playing in so many regionals? Are they going to bump it to 550 or 600?

So anyway this is a great idea. Set invites from regionals and nationals finish, and set top cut limit to be that you need at least 2 wins to make the invite, e.g regionals top 4 invite have top cut of at least 16.

Keep CP though, and have a super qualifier as 2nd tournament of nationals, similar tournament but open to only X or higher CP. That keeps states and cities relevant. Dump all LCQs and dump LC points.

Or something like that...
