Other than Hot Springs and the dog track in West Memphis....what else is there to fight for in Arkansas?? I think the loser ought to get Arkansas, not the winner Vince  Have fun all, in case I dont make it up.

Yes this is going to be so awesome. We havent had an official event in like what 3 years? I think this will also bring good exposure to the Professor Program since people will be seeing this event.

Also for any parents that need to keep their Magic playing kids active in the same time slot is the Magic Junior Championship Series. Thats where my kid will be. Cant wait to see everyone at Origins again

Anyone else think that we should have the swiss rounds be a little more complex that just one sealed deck. How is that going to work too, do we get to pick the deck or are we stuck with what we got? I once did a real fun theme deck challenge where your stuck with one random theme deck but after opening it up and taking a look you got to draft 2 additional packs. It was alot of fun too.

JB, actually, last year was the first year without a Professor Only event.

I happen to agree that a better skill challenge would be limited, constructed, rochester for top cut.

My guess is that they are expecting lots of players. (I'll be there too!) Doing a draft with a large number of players costs time. It takes maybe 20 minutes to set up the pods, another 30 minutes to draft the cards, and then another 30 minutes to build the decks. Sealed is much quicker. Everyone find a seat, in 10 minutes you can hand out the packs, and then you have 30 minutes to build a deck. Sure there may be a larger "luck" factor involved, but it also puts a larger variety of cards in our hands.

Math is correct. Time is definitley a factor. My intention is not to keep all of the Professors up until midnight playing in this event (if you decide to stay up late on your own, that's a different story). Nationals is the next day and the last thing we want to hear is Professor complaining that we forced them to stay up late, and now they can't focus on the big tourney.

We're bringing enough Emerald for 256 Professors. That's 32 draft pods! Talk about a nightmare! Sealed is MUCH easier to manage with that many people.

And speaking of Sealed...

From the 2004-2005 Tournament Formats document (http://op.pokemon-tcg.com/tournaments/rules_n_resources.asp):

"In a Sealed Deck event, players receive booster packs from the Tournament Organizer at the beginning of the event. Each player opens all of his or her booster packs at a signal from the Tournament Organizer and constructs a 40-card deck, using only those cards and any basic Energy provided by the Tournament Organizer. Players have 30 minutes to construct their decks.

"Players may not trade the cards from their booster packs with other players until the tournament ends. The Tournament Organizer may require players to fill out deck lists, including the cards in their decks and any cards not being used. Once the first round of the tournament begins, players may not alter the contents of their deck."

So, no, you won't be getting a random Theme Deck to play with.

The problem I have with sealed is that there really isnt much "skill" factor. If you get stuck with not many good cards, or evolution chains thats pretty much it for you, which has happened to me at a few prereleases. Now I realise that a big part of the game itself is luck, but I'd rather not have the finalists be determined by who opened the best sealed cards from their packs. I think adding a constructed part would just add more registration because we would have to worry about decks checks. Maybe adding more packs than a regular prerelease would be a better idea? A ten pack sealed would be VERY interesting.

Adam, I agree.

Regular sealed is very luck based, but increasing the packs simply increases your chances, does not take the luck away.

It was VERY interesting for me to have a sealed event where everyone was given the same 2 theme decks to build a 40 card deck....120 card pool, only able to use 40, made things very interesting.

I would like to see something along those lines, which would benefit, and test the deck making skill of the players, not just their luck in the packs. Let's face it, there are some Broken cards that really give a large advantage to anyone who would pull them (Mewtwo EX, ZapdosEX, Manectric EX among others)

There is one item that would accomplish this....the Battle Stadium. You would have a pool of over 180 cards with which to make a 40 card "sealed" deck. You know what your opponents have. You even have a good trainer engine! (TV Reporter, Dunsparse, Bill's). Do you play just Blaziken, just gardevoir, or take a chance on some of the other lines....such as the Seaking line to counter Blaze? I think this would mark the ULTIMATE in deckbuilding skill. Other big advantage - no need for energy - you are given energy in the Battle Stadium, and you use what you have (maybe offer every player 4 of each energy not in the stadium)

Time would not be a factor...you still have the same time to pull the same cards.

Who knows, maybe we will be surprised, and there will be a "draft set" that will come out, where everyone will pull from the same 100 cards.

Just my crazy, vision, humble opinion.

Actually, I considered giving everyone 1 EX Trainer deck and 3 POP 1 packs to build a deck out of. ;)

So we are in agreement then, what is currently planned seems kind of ordinary? I like the battle stadium idea, way to expensive though. I was looking at what you really get in the pop packs, and it would be interesting to do Sandstorm/Pop in my opinion, maybe even with deoxys in the mix as well. A lot of the evolution chains can be mixed there. Now if we could find some good practical ideas, that would help.
