The newer 360's can't even red ring- literally. They took out that feature on the slims. The PS3's online being free doesn't matter, really if the experience is terrible. Whenever you download those console/online updates they take forever(5-10 minutes if you haven't played in a while) eve on a fast connection. Every update on the 360 takes like 5-10 seconds in comparison. Not to mention that the 360's voice chat sounds so much better and clearer than the 360's AND has cross game chat. PS3's online is so lacking they actually offer a premium online service for a charge.
Also the subscription prices are very reasonable. I haven't paid more than $30 for a year subscription in about 2 or 3 years. The deals and promotions are going on all the time ,too. When you turn on your 360 you are often offered $1 to upgrade to Gold membership for a month. You get free 48 hour trials in most online games too.
Essentially the 360 has such a better online interface to the extent that the price of it is a moot point.
The Red Ring should really be called and over heating problem. They said they fixed it but I still see 'cooked' 360 slims. I think, and other games say that charging for online game play is a really bad idea. 60 bucks is a lot of money. Thats the cost of a game just to play online.
Its true that the 360 has really good online game play but the PS3's online is far from bad. I have a PS3 and sure the online is not the best but its still pretty good.
I'll go into the pros and cons of each from user experience.

PS3 CONS

- Over priced
- Updates take a while
XBox 360 PROS

XBox 360 CONS
- PS3 ported 360 games use up to 4 disk
- Overheating is still and issue with older 360 models
- Released too many 360/Slim Models. Over 14 different versions
- Some models don't come with hard drives
- Must pay to play online games
- 360 add on cost WAY too much
- Your choice of wired or wireless controllers, both are pricy
- Not backwards with Xbox games
- Slim models are now backwards compatible with 360 HDD's or memory card and you have to buy a 30 buck port to transfer data
- Kinect cost as much as a Wii.
The PS3 pros outweigh that of the 360. I'm not saying the 360 is bad but he will benefit for the hardware site of the PS3.
I know people who bough PS3 just for the Blue Ray player.
