U would be fine with invites w/o trips? U would spend the $1000+ for plane and hotel accom.?

I am spending for years over $5,000 to attend to Worlds. (normally would be around 10,000 but we earned the Nationals trips)
Coming year it will be much more due to the destination and time difference.
You cannot travel that far and only stay 2-3 nights, that's very unhealthy for my kids.

So the only time you guys can have some real fun with this TCG is when you are at the World Championships?

Tell me exactly where in my post I said that's the only time I have fun with a TCG. No, I never said that. Worlds is a unique kind of fun, its like christmas, it only comes once a year, and really, you can only have THAT kind of fun on that ONE time of the year, its different from all the other occasions over the year, its special, it's unique, and it can't be experianced any other time or way than at Worlds (or Christmas, depending on which line of logic you're following).

I also think that Flaming_Spinich makes a good point, great players won't even be there. How is that a true World Championship if some or even most of the best players arn't even there competing? It's like me saying i'm having the World Championship at my house, and playing against my cat or something. It doesn't work that way, the entire world has to be involved, and everyone from around that world need to be given a fair chance to get into worlds.

We are travelling to Worlds this year, whole family, with or without trips.

I am NOT putting the pressure on my kids of "no win, no Worlds"

For the top level players this game has enough pressure. Anyone see my kid blow chunks at Nationals before he won it?

Don't tell me the kids don't feel the pressure!

I am lucky, I am starting to save for the trip now, and have dedicated that as our vacation. Never been to Hawaii, great excuse to go.

It puts us on par with the Yamatos, and other great international players who do not have trips, and if they want to go they PAY.

PUI has a responsibility to put on a superior Worlds product, not to give everybody FREE ADMISSION there!

Worlds got to be too un-exclusive. I think it is a bit extreme that they cut back so severely, but it has been coming.

Just more pressure to make other events, like Regionals, the absolute best they can be for all players!

CHAW!

How will Nationals be the "most fun" tournament in the world now when most good players will be too busy working on winning a crapshoot to make their way to worlds, rather than have as much fun as they could.

Worlds seems like the only place where there is no pressure to perform as well, unless you are one of the elite few who have a shot at the t4.

More like $3,600 for all three of us. And yes, I am fine paying for it just to go to the LCQ, I'd be thrilled if either JandPDS or I had an invite w/o trip.

Actually, I'm just thrilled to be going to Hawaii. Why else work?

How high a score do you need to earn a trip?

I don't want to rain on anyones parade but these were the top 10 N. America scores from last year.

Rank Name Rating Age Div State Country
1 Claudia Islas Neri 2064 MA PU MX
2 Jason Klaczynski 2058 MA IL US
3 Jaime Geurero 2040 MA CA US
4 Chris Fulop 2025 MA OH US
5 Pablo Meza 2022 MA DF MX
6 Michael Perucca 1998 MA CO US
7 David Houck 1995 MA SC US
8 mario lopez cantu 1981 MA NL MX
9 kyle sabelhaus 1980 MA FL US
10 Eric Craig 1977 MA FL US

So after Nationals you will need your score to be somewhere around there if you hope to earn a trip based on your ranking alone.
I for one am extreamly thankfull that there is a Grinder this year in Hawaii :)

rank 1 is irrelevant, NO ONE here knows her and she's never been to a single premiere event so disregard her ranking.

Bullados: I think every competitive player has fun playing the game. To be honest, competitive players easily play many more games than noncompetitive players simply because they enjoy it so much. And because competitive players like playing the game so much, when they are told that they have a very small chance of being at the biggest event of the year, they're upset.

YOU may have just as much fun at a local tournament as at Worlds, but you're in the extreme minority. Worlds is a blast! Everyone knows it, and trying to convince me or anyone else that it isn't the biggest and best event of the year is a joke! It's like saying that the NBA finals are just as exciting and interesting as a regular season game; get real!

Worlds is what everyone wants to make it to. Maybe they don't all work hard to get there, but they sure want a shot! Nobody is saying the only time they have fun is at Worlds, but what many people are saying is that the time they have the MOST fun is at Worlds! Giving someone little-to-no hope at getting to play at the most fun event of the year is upsetting to the majority of players.

Exactley, how many times per year do I get to Call Chris Fullop a poser, Meet William Hung, play against one of Yamato's buddies and win, Have a humongous language barrier in games, say E4 does it, meet hundreds of Pokegymers, play Martin in his Battle tower challenge, and stay up till 3am watching an extreamly cut-thorat event?

Not very often... What only 1 time each year. After 3 years, you become pretty acoustomed to this.
I'm sorry that the player base outside the U.S. has mostly never gone to Worlds, but that's no reason to take away from the ones who have; and not give anything else to the Int'l player base. Who needs it to be in Hawaii anyway, I'd be just as happy in Idaho or something :/

Wow, we get 1/6 invites but also have over 1/2 of the players in the world.

That means two things:

We have it hardest to get it.
We deserve more.

How do you know that we have over half the players??? Just dont say "my poke accts" bc the language barrier prevents many players from registering, etc. Look at the numbers in Mexico for Nats. Have you ever seen pics from Japan showing the CROWDS of players playing, watching etc?? Yes, we probably DO have more players than anywhere else, but how many of those players are "hard core"? The numbers come down when you look for the worlds caliber and world's seeking players. JMHO We still get more invites than anywhere else.

F_S: That was my quote about sour grapes and I am american, not Int'l. If everyone is scaled down and we still get more than anyone else....why should we gripe? Would I like to see more Worlds invites for the USA and everywhere else? Heck ya! But, we adapt and deal with what we have.

I'm with Lawman. I want to win a trip to worlds just as much as the next person, but if a tournament has the balls to list itself as a World Championship, it should atleast give each country a decent chance to win it. Making the tournament 60% american and 40% every other country doesn't really allow that.

And I think Lawman makes a great point. How many different people actually win city championships? I doubt over 50 different people won a city championship last year.

Anyone know the k values of the different tournaments last year?

Hmm.
So she got over 2000 at non-Premeire events?

Wait, the Grinder's at Worlds, right? There's still a chance to play! :/

Now, if I had a time machine and went into the future to after Worlds '07, I would HOPE that things were different for 2007-2008. Perhaps this season is just in a big crunch due to change?

I have to admit, I kind of like the idea of an evenly represented world championship to make it a more country-oriented event than an individual one. I would definitely like to see higher numbers for each country though. It's dissapointing to me that if I do pull off a trip at nationals for a third straight year, I probably won't even get to see any of my friends at worlds.

I think Worlds this year will be of only minor interest to most players, as most good players won't get there, whereas they probably will be at US nats. US nats will be THE event for pokemon, and so I, nor any other non-american players, can compete in that. I'm not advocating open nationals, I just want Worlds to be a big deal; not something that people put second to other events. If Worlds is going to be so small and exclusive I think POP needs to make the event as publicized and prestigious as possible in order to give it appropriate attention.

Those were last year's rankings, which includes little league tournaments etc. I'd still like to know the k values for last year's events to get an idea of how the top players ended up at about 2000. For example, if this year's k values are higher, than the leaders will probably be above that mark this year.
