yeah you gave really good examples! i really liked how you explained the credibility. It made a light bulb go on, so thanks once again for the good read.

I related a lot to the respect part though because i myself practice muay thai

Hey Jaeger,

Could you repost this at Strategy so I can sticky it there?

I've been clearing room at the top of that forum just for you :thumb:

Thanks.

RA

P.S.
PM me once you've done it so I can lock and sticky.

Alright Guys and Dolls, let me be very clear:

Thank you for not posting:
1. references to profanity
2. personal attacks on individuals
3. apparently just for the sake of arguing
4. content or links beyond a PG rating
5. unhelpful, unkind or rude remarks
6. the same point or request over and over

In addition, please use only one account, do not post in inactive threads or to advertise other sites, follow individual forum posting guidelines, make all public communication in English, and report posts violating The Rules using the report button.

Enforcement of these rules is performed according to the impression each post leaves on the judgment of the PokéGym Moderators. All members should report posts that violate these rules (and may politely remind others of the rules, but without threatening any enforcement). The Rules will primarily be enforced with reminders or infractions, with optional deletes or editing. This leaves the member with a clear reminder of the reason for any enforcement and assures that all staff have a concise view of a member's history. Infraction points assist staff with being consistent and impartial in enforcement of The Rules.

Appeals of infractions and reminders may be made by a polite and well-reasoned post in the Team Compendium contact forum. In nearly all cases, Team Compendium will uphold the staff judgment. Appeals of bans may be made via well-reasoned proposal sent via the comment form. Members are invited to review the pages listing the current infractions and infraction points, staff roles and staff review.

This is the list found for PokeGym Posting Rules, usually seen at the very bottom of your screen. The Staff here is all for a healthy debate and insight from both camps, as long as it is Respectful (removed of any form of unpleasant remarks) and moving Forward! This is not a form of moving forward: but you said.... no I didn't, I said... no you didn't, you said.... no I didn't, I said.....and will more often than not find members receiving appropriate Reminders. We the Staff do not enjoy the delivering if ill news, but we do expect our Members to follow the Rules here just as you would at an Event.

And with that, please continue moving forward and enjoy the well written Article!

I normally always find responses to everything, but this article had me speechless.
There is quite a lot of respect over ´ere, of course there could be more but that´s up to everyone.
However, many points opened new views to me - I will be sure to take notes for the future.

Thank you.

Moving onto the rest of article, something that has always worried me is Jay's refusal to acknowledge luck. Perhaps I am misunderstanding what he is saying, but I've been playing TCGs (or for that matter been alive) too long not to recognize "luck". Some luck, is merely that which is outside your understanding: Event 1 influences Event 2 and person A reacts appropriately causing Event 3 until it all comes down to Event 33 caused by person Z and you're all "What are the odds of someone doing that today of all days?"

I lol'd so hard. xDDDD

Great article. Mr. J. Everything made perfect sense to me and I enjoyed every bit of it.

Awesome article!

I think the lack of respect is just the way society has digressed. I played a match against an older member of the Pokemon community a while back. He has been in the community for a long time and is a respected judge in his area. He beat me in what I felt like should have been a fairly easy match for me. But, it was a good game that went down to a few prizes left. After the game, he we were shuffling and waiting for a judge to come over and doing the after game routine. We both had a pretty bad day, I finished 1-4, him, 2-3. Anyway, we talked about the match a bit and we exchanged things that we liked about each others deck. Not once did he (or me) feel as if we were going to insult one another (though I had more to be insulted about since I lost). And, not once did I feel the need to tell him about how I thought I should have beat him fairly handily but didn't. I congratulated him on his win, he thanked me for the good game. I complemented him on his deck and he complemented me on mine. But, while I am a VERY competitive person, I realize this is just a game. We were both old enough to realize that. Now, don't get me wrong, whenever I tell people of how I did at the tournament, I always throw in my excuses! But, that doesn't make me a sore loser. And, I don't think it was luck on his part. He beat me because I made stupid mistake, after stupid mistake, after stupid mistake.

I may not have any credentials that top pokemon players respect, but I still have enough of a brain to contribute to a discussion.

My contribution to this discussion is the following:
The simple fact that some high-school sports teams have worse post-game behaviour than pokemon players is no reason not to address the clear issues within the community.
I happily acknowledge the fact that I'm a mediocre player at best, and I tend to play peculiar lists that I enjoy, and work with what I have at my disposal. At league, I have great fun in all my games, because the atmosphere is relaxed and there's a good bit of interaction around the game itself.
At tournaments, however, whilst I still enjoy the majority of my games, and I accept that the atmosphere is by nature far more competetive, there are still the odd match where the tone crosses the line into hostility.

Sometimes I get the feeling that my opponent considers their time wasted when facing a "noob" like me.
That is what ruins my day. Not losing.
(Although, in the interest of fairness, on the odd occasion I actually beat someone who's thumbed their nose at me, I can't deny how much more I relish those victories).

If you've been playing long enough, I think you Evolve from n00b into rAnDoM! ;)

I really wonder if there is some connection to the current state of the game and the decrease in respect. I've noticed that the faster a TCG goes, the more ill-mannered the players seem. This is merely an anecdotal observation, I realize, but I felt I should put it forth. When Pokemon is too "fast", it seems like the problem gets worse. When we have a format that requires patience to win, it seems to ween out at least the impatient, rude players (though of course not all of them).

great article Jay,

the first time I played vs you i not only saw your natural talent, but your great character/sportsmanship...

your humble attitude toward the game not only contributes to the community, but to your talent as well
(able learn from wins and losses, rather than brag or get sour grapes from them)

this is why you're a top notch player
(and by far one of my personal favorates in the game lol)

Jay,

Just thought I'd let you know that I wrote an English paper on Respect & Sportsmanship inspired by this article you wrote. I've learned a lot about respect from the Pokemon community, and I think this article sums it up perfectly. I also appreciated the personal experiences you shared about your martial arts tournaments and the role of respect in them.

Excellent article

Oh my... seriously. I am not joking right now but this is the deepest thing I've ever seen on the Internet.
About something people often forget. And to go this deep with something like this is absolutely incredible.
I hate the people (and annoying chavs or whatever) at my school who think they're it and stuff and think fighting makes you better xD But they don't have a brain. Now, me on the other hand, I understand logic and don't rush into stuff because it's just stupid. And you, Jaeger, have gone ocean bottom with this.
And of course, not to mention that respect should be happening anyway. I just hate it when people have their cards stolen from League or Worlds etc. It's just ridiculous. I know jealousy can get the better of us but think about it for 1 second. Is this right? And people seem to miss this question out and just proceed to do it without thinking.
At the Triumphant prerelease, I could have easily stole someone Lux X. Did I? Pffft. No. Why the hell would someone want to do such as stupid and childish thing?
I don't know. Maybe because they can't go as deep as Jaeger has in this and actually understand respect is one of the most important, if not, THE most important thing in life.

You have my thanks Jaeger. Congratulations. I can tell you are one of those people who actually does think before they type, before they do etc.
Loved reading it. One of the best articles out there.

Respect on redshark too people :p. I just played against a real jerk on redshark and I folded because I couldn't stand his rudeness. :p
