Sour Grapes: People who ASKED for concessions.

I don't have a problem with people asking me for a concession. However, I DO have a problem with people "getting all huffy" when I refuse.

A couple years ago at US Nationals, I was lucky enough to win an invitation to Worlds in the Professor Cup. The next day during Nats, twice I was asked to concede because I already had an invitation to Worlds. Twice, I refused, only to see my opponents bitterly "storm" away, murmuring disgust at my "uncharitable disregard" for their desire to get a trip. Then, after making the Top16 cut, I wasn't too surprised when those same two individuals cheered when I lost, as though somehow my earlier refusal to concede had somehow made me "unworthy" to be in the playoffs.

Asking for a concession is OK with me, but don't expect it as an entitlement, nor "go ballistic" when I refuse.

turn it around on them ask them what its worth to them cards cash etc. then when they make an offer tell the head just bribing is a big no no.

I dont see anything wrong with asking. I event dont have a problem of telling them why you want them to conceed. When you started to badger/pressure them into concession then it is a huge problem. Aslong as you ask nice a friendly and they give you a quick answer whatever it maybe, then it is no big deal.

I feel the only time I would conceed to a player is at an event like Worlds/Nationals when I am playing Up to a player that has a shot of making top cut in the last round. I would feel like a jerk (a bit) since I have no right playing them as I dont even have the same record and I have no shot of making it if I win. Example - Cut is 7-2 at Nats. A 5-3/6-2 are playing. If I am the 5-3, I personally would conceed since I have no shot of making it at all and if I have 3 losses I most likely lost any type of rating invite chance. But that is me.

I know what i would tell someone if they asked me to concede. But i can't put it here or i would probaly be banned.

I think there are few reasons to concede. I mean you fought for it, "you earned it" as POP would coin the phrase. The only time you might want to concede, would be if you were going to drop or if there was a great misplay that put you at an unfair advantage and could not be reversed. But seriously, asking people to concede is like asking people for free cards. Tournaments are meant to be played competitviely and fairly. The fact that anyone who's a card shark, has a good deck and who deals well with the competitive metagame should have a good chance at sweeping the tournament.

As Theodore Roosevelt said:

"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to rank with poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat."

I'd also like to say that KidKingler is all good. :)

I understand your plight, but you may be giving someone a chance to go on that may not deserve it, and at the same time, preventing someone else who is working hard for their wins to be stripped of their opportunity. That is why I have a problem with concessions.

yea i had something similar last year .I had a invite last year and my opponent wanted me to lose to him because i had invite and he didnt.I told him no and we played and i won.But like the fact that they want a win because you have a invite to worlds and they think they can make it if they won is disgusting..If they want a win they should EARN the win themselfs and stop asking for cheep easy wins.Thats poor SOTG.
