Simply because everyone besides 'Tuff has free retreat, so whomever they bring out, you switch out and kill. Chan can't hurt Scyther, and haunter kills him, Buzz doesn't do enough damage,
Chan can hurt Scyther, but only for meager damage. Good think a "classic" Haymaker from this time period would be running Electabuzz, and I think Movie Promo Mewtwo is just old enough to exist. Another thing to remember is that it doesn't matter that your guys have free retreat, because a Gusted Wigglytuff or Jigglypuff should be a prize. So you should be seeing this happen to you quite often:
a) GoW Wiggly out
b) S/ER what you have in play other than Wiggly
c) Hitmonchan OHKO's Wiggly.

wiggly+full bench+pluspower=ONE HIT ANY HAYMAKER POKEMON
And that is special because? Haymaker is famous for trading blows. You OHKO a haymaker Pokemon with an evo, they OHKO your evo back. Guess who comes out ahead? Haymaker expended one less card. To turn around your little equation:
Hitmonchan+Active Wigglytuff=Prize
Your best bet for surviving is the Haunter. Of course, that is why they released Goop Gas in the very next set. How convenient a cut off point. Scyther's will be annoying. Just that, annoying. If you waste time powering them up on the bench, something else get's Gusted and KO'd. If you build while active, Buzz or Mewtwo will kill it in two.
You also have to remember Scoop Up, especially with Moview Promo Mewtwo.

When I have the time, we shall have to. However, your arrogance makes me assume it will be a waste. Its possible you are indeed a skilled player, and your skill is giving you the edge against less skilled opponents. Your whole attitude makes me... distrust you. Even if we assumed for a minute that you are right, your entire way of presenting it is wrong.
