The official all year around NFL Thread - Superbowl & Offseason

I never understood how the franchise tag works...

Each year, you can choose one of your players that can become an Unrestricted Free Agent. You may sign that player for one year at the average cost of the top 5 contracts for that position without having to negotiate with that player. If you Franchise a player a second consecutive year, that player's contract increases (I believe) 10%.

It's basically a way for the teams to hold on to their players that they, for whatever reason, can't sign to an actual contract.

Also, Wikipedia is your friend.

I've looked up the franchise tag before. I just never quite understood it. If he's signed for X amount of years already, why would you tag the player? They're already "not a free agent" technically.

You tag the player because the team and the player are so far apart in the negotiation for longer term contract; maybe they cannot agree on number of years, average salary, or guaranteed money which includes signing bonus and roster bonuses.

So Steelers cutting Ward, kinda sad in ways. I mean, sure his role was diminishing, but he was willing to restructure and take the pay cuts to stay and eventually retire as a Steeler, so it's a bit of a shame in ways in the twilight of his career he can't stay with the team he's been with his whole career.

Generally, teams don't use them on players already under contract (though the rules allow for it). It's generally less expensive to have them play out their contract than to apply the Tag. It's used more for Unrestricted Free Agents that can't reach an agreement with their team to make sure the team has said player for another year. Prime examples for this year are going to be Matt Forte and Drew Brees.

I want Ward on the Bears as our #2. I like his tough, our wideouts need to learn that.

What do you think of the bounty "gate"? What should happen to the Saints, Redskins, and Gregg Williams? Substantial fines especially to Gregg Williams should be enough of a punishment.

I dunno...in all honesty, as much as they all like to preach about not being out there to hurt each other and that touchy feely stuff, the basic fact is that is their job, to go out and take out and stop opposing players. So meh, I neither support nor condone it I guess.

That being said, they're gonna get fined big time, if not losing a draft pick as well. Which in the grand scheme of things isn't that much since the Saints pick near the bottom, but still that's 1 pick they won't have. which hurts regardless. Not to mention they're now going to be scrutinized big time if anyone cries foul (even if they didn't do anything on that given play).

Williams should be banned from the game. But Goodell would never do something like that. If the penalty is anything less than the one given to the Pats for Spygate, then the NFL becomes completely meaningless.

There should also be a significant rule change. If a player's hit leads *directly* to another player's significant (i.e. game-missing) injury, said offender should be suspended for a MINIMUM of 2 games. If the hit was deemed "injury intentional", then they get the boot for the season.

These kinds of shenanigans should NOT go on in ANY industry. Even one as necessarily violent as professional football. Now is the time to take a firm stand against headhunting and bounties. Goodell had better not screw this one up.

It is official...Peyton Manning has been cut by the Colts.

I wonder if SF goes after him.
Teams that are known to be interested in him are Miami, Washington, New York Jets, KC, Arizona, and maybe Seattle.

Jets are NOT gonna go after Peyton. They're all-in on the Sanchize.

And I doubt that Arizona goes after Peyton after how much they spent on Kolb last year.

Last I heard, SF was still trying to negotiate with Smith, but they might end up doing something for Peyton.

Cleveland will have something to do with Peyton as well.

Wow.....I am stunned....Redskins trade 2012 first round pick(6th overall), 2012 2nd round pick, 2013 first round pick, 2014 first round pick to the Rams for 2012 first round pick(2nd overall). Net 2 first round picks and 2nd pick to move up 4 spots in the first round.
I feel so sorry for RGIII who will have the most pressure ever for a rookie qb, assuming that the Colts draft Luck.

No kidding...the Redskins better be dang sure they want him, as that's an insane amount of picks to give up for 1 player instead of trying to play a bit more in free agency. On paper, I'd even say as bad as Oakland giving up their picks for Palmer...

Guess we'll see though, regardless with all the picks they gave up for (likely) RG3, they're gonna be short on talent to surround him with, which doesn't help his own chances at success. Unless they make some big moves in free agency, and at least Snyder isn't too stingy with money in wanting to make big moves there.

And the first major move of Free Agent Insanity 2012 is...

The Bears trade Greg Olsen (essentially) and a 3rd rounder for Brandon Marshall.

Yeah, the Bears just brought back one of the NFL's best hookup combinations with one of the best 3-down RBs and a great possession receiver.

I like this move.

Bears got lucky that they did not suffer the same fate as the Cowboys and Redskins for front-loading contract in the uncapped year. They front-loaded Julius Peppers' contract in 2011 and 2012.

Good move on getting Marshall.

From Rotoworld...

3/5/2010: Signed a six-year, $84 million contract. The deal contains $42 million guaranteed, including a $6.5 million signing bonus, a first-year roster bonus of $12.5 million, and a second-year "signing" bonus of $10.5 million. Another $7.5 million is available through incentives based on sacks, Pro Bowl berths, and Defensive Player of the Year awards. Peppers can earn annual $100,000 workout bonuses in years one through five. 2012: $8.9 million, 2013: $12.9 million, 2014: $13.9 million, 2015: $16.5 million, 2016: Free Agent

It is most definitely front-loaded. But there's also tons upon tons of monies in the later portions of the contract. And the $6.5 AND the $10.5 are pro-rated over the course of the contract WRT salary cap.

Also, the Bears only did it for one player. The Skins did it for 3, and the Cowboys for at least 2.

Wait...why are the Bears getting the extra 1.5 million for their salary cap? NFL somewhat penalized Saints and Raiders for the same thing by not giving them the extra 1.5 million that was redistributed. Why aren't the Bears getting the same punishment that Saints and Raiders got?

Cowboys did it mainly for Miles Austin.

Again from Rotoworld...

9/9/2010: Signed a seven-year, $57.168 million contract. The cap-conscious deal contains $18 million guaranteed -- no signing bonus but all of Austin's whopping $17.078 million first-year base salary. 2012: $1.15 million, 2013: $6.732 million, 2014: $5.5 million, 2015: $6.888 million, 2016: $11.38 million, 2017: Free Agent

Uhhh... That's insane. The Bears did front-load Pep's contract, but they still had to pay his signing bonus across all the years of the contract. Austin's first year base salary does NOT get pro-rated over the course of the contract. That's egregious, whereas Pep's is merely expensive.

From Wikipedia...

An unrestricted free agent in the 2009 offseason, Haynesworth signed a seven-year, $100 million contract with the Washington Redskins on the first day of free agency, February 27, 2009.[21] The deal was expected to pay Haynesworth $32 million in the first 13 months,[2] included $41 million guaranteed and could have reached $115 million if all incentives were met

That sounds FAR different from Pep's contract. And from what I heard, the Skins did something similar with a buncha different players.

I'm thinking Miami's making cap room for Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne. I'll have to wait this one out to see if I like it myself. Olsen, Fasano, Manning, Wayne, Bess and Hartline? With Long on the O-Line? I think Miami just got potent.

Point A: The Colts resigned Reggie Wayne.

Point B: Greg Olsen was traded to the Panthers last year for the 3rd round pick that the Bears traded to Miami for Marshall.
