Theme Decks at the Prerelease: A better value?

I am going to play in the theme deck challenge...it might be a great opportunity to help new players!

In response to the raffles at PR's, our PTO here in Houston is awesome. Usually a door prize for each age division. So I learned from the best.

As a league leader of 3 area leagues, I also have weekly free raffles for Pokemon stuff. I look for deals (like those Darkrai card cases from a BK promo at Nats for 1$ - I bought like 20 of them...) and I also will occasionally have a drawing for a customized playmat that I make myself. The kids love it and my leagues are growing by leaps and bounds.

If you are ever in Texas and North Houston, all players are welcomed at the Tomball and Cypress Texas Pokemon Leagues!

That's a total SIX packs ASIDE from the deck itself, people! Plus a promo, and the deckbox and all that with the deck. And that's a good deal even if the decks are half bad. AND sleeves. 25 bucks. Good deal.

how do you figure 'six' packs? TDC has always been deck + 4 boosters; now that there is a booster included in the deck that makes FIVE, not six...

I do not believe that this question has been answered. How good are the deck boxes? Do they hold a a sleeved deck?

They are cardboard deck box's. They will not hold a sleeved 60 card deck They barely fit 60 in without sleeves.

Totoro says they are giving out 5 extra packs rather than 4 now iirc

EDOT: oh my bad, that's including the extra packs

Checked the decklists at PR's. Decks have more rares, but still not worth buying over the packs.

WOW, if you buy 2 of this you actually have a very decent deck. (2 of the same ofc.)

If that Bellosom had been a Vileplume I would actually have bought a theme deck. xD Though gotta give credit, it is much improved from old theme decks.

Better Theme decks are nice, but I would only reccomend theme decks to brand new players. If you don't have enough pokemon communications, great way to secure some. Best Value in terms of number of rare's yes, but ultimately buying theme decks is redundent to folks who ultimately get over a box of cards each set.

The primary reason is that if you ultimately buy a box of cards or more, you will get those cards in the theme decks anyways. Hey, when you could get old Quick Search Pidgeot (as important as Claydols were) in a Fire-Red Leaf-Green theme deck, that was different story, but the card has to be great versus going with the random pull of a normal packs.

We ussually do pre-releases, buy two boxes, then augment our deck needed cards collection with e-bay. (I prefer to buy from e-bay cards I need from decks, versus trading, because if I trade, then I will just be trading for the cards local folks need for decks. IE I don't want to be the local trader mogul, that trades for all the good cards from our league folks.)

Unless you are a collector too, then you'll notice a few cards that can't be gotten in packs - like Bellossom and Togekiss (rare instead of holo), special holo treatment cards that are different than in the set - or maybe even someone who likes to keep up to date on the latest rulings with the newest rulebook, ...... Hmmm, still looks like decent reasons to do the Theme Deck Challenge - in my opinion.

Even to non-new players, certain trainers and supporters are easier to get in theme decks than trying to buy endless packs. And many players don't have the luxury of buying singles online.
