Thoughts on the finals not being recorded?

Is anyone else upset that the Top Cut wasn't allowed to record the Finals at US Nationals? First of all, I don't understand why they don't find a way themselves to put a camera on the final matches (with the camera angled so that it only shows the playing field and not the player's hands outside of a Portrait) and then show that on the viewing screens like they do for the Video Game competition.

Moving beyond that, they also chose not to let the Top Cut film the Finals. During the Finals, you don't really get to see what's going on and all, so it would have been nice to be able to go back and watch the game after the fact to see how the game actually played out.

I don't understand why the people in charge of the event would choose not to allow the Top Cut to record the Finals to be displayed on their website later. What the Top Cut guys have been doing is good for the game and their match commentary is always really good.

I could understand the perspective that they don't want some outside group capitalizing on their product, but if that's their perspective, why let the Top Cut record any of the matches? And if that's the case, they need to be recording it themselves and providing match commentary themselves, as not having the Finals recorded for a match as good as this one isn't what's best for the game.

I believe pokemon did not allow the to. Either way the internet there was bad.

The match should have been filmed and posted, it will only let the game grow. Watching these type of games, finals at nationals, gets people excited to play the game. I have no idea what the reasoning would be why they did not let the match be filmed, either way they already made the decision not to allow the filming so... oh well!

I was frustrated that not only was it not being streamed onto the TVs but it was not recorded to begin with. I had a decent spot to view the finals however later in the game people started to stand up so I just left. Having such a tiny spot to watch all THREE age groups is rather difficult as it draws a lot of people. Being that it is 2012 and the equipment was around for it to happen I'm disappointed in the call.

Disappointing, but not surprising. It would've been near impossible to fit taping equipment near the Masters table without ruining the view of those watching, which is not something I think they wanted.

Preaching to the Choir. I don't understand why they weren't allowed to record the Swiss rounds either. It's the ultimate form of free advertising, done professionally (as opposed to the quick-and-dirty stuff I put together), and posted on one of the most populated new YouTube channels out there right now. I seriously do not understand TPCi's marketing/branding at times...

Well to be "fair," if the area was to be only what they had set up could they have filmed all three top cut matches at the same time? I know in the grand scheme of things Masters is what people are interested in, but how would you feel as the Junior/Senior T2 and no one watching?

Like how they play the commercial for the latest pokemon set once every blue moon. If they would film the games it would build the game AND it would help people see how the metagame is. But I guess the reason they would not put all the equipment there because it could distract the players. which would not help decide the best player (considering there are a lot of ADHD people) but then if they wanted the best player they would not time the top cut.

I have never been to an event where the staff knows how to work with spectators. The rules say spectators can watch games but should remain at a reasonable distance as determined by event staff. However, most judges will push spectators so far from the game that they really cannot watch the games.

For an event like Nats, where the "reasonable distance" is quite a large one, projecting the games onto screens like they do in VG would satisfy the interest people have in the games.

Part of the problem is that a reasonable distance to see the game, and a reasonable distance to stop spectators seeing players' hands will never be anywhere near close to each other.

Pretty sure all 3 games are watched when they are showcased at the World Championship. I know I look at all three games.

I'm very happy that they even let filming take place at all. We'll make progress step-by-step. I cannot understand the reasoning behind not recording finals, but I'm sure there is a good reason. Next year, hopefully we'll be able to record and stream games. The next year, there might even be a screen for us to watch the game (similar to VGC). The possibilities given from recording are huge... just take every step that we can get.

I understand the Juniors/Seniors concern, but the recording is really for us as viewers. The viewers almost unanimously would rather watch a random Masters game than a random Juniors/Seniors game. All three of the worlds games are shown for finals. I hope that P!P sees the excitement that comes from recorded games and has a "feature match" every round at worlds. That would be absolutely amazing!

Speaking of this, I can't believe they did that for the video game again after all the criticism last year. There was more than enough time to do them one at a time. People want to watch the finals. If you do this, it just means everyone aside from close friends and family crowd around Masters and don't pay attention to the kids. Why would you take that excitement away from the children?

I had to skip watching a friend play in Seniors finals because I was helping livestream the Masters finals match. Very disappointed. What's worse is that this is the second year in a row that Prodigious has made finals for Seniors and had this happen to him. At least this year Masters ended before Seniors so people actually saw him win rather than just hear it announced. Can't say the same for Juniors though where barely anyone saw the games either year.

The quality of the topcut coverage was very good. Obviously the more we can get of this kind of thing, the better.

But compared to where we were a couple of years ago (or even last year), this is a massive step forward.

Just have to be patient I guess . . . a lot of progress has been made in a short time.

This. Have you seen the state of the coverage big Magic tournaments get?! The whole match gets filmed, commentators are used and the whole thing's uploaded to their main site and YouTube. I don't see how it's a bad thing at all, all it does is generate hype and excitement. I'm not saying do it for loads of tournaments, but the finals at Nationals seems big enough that they should. Rather than have people stood around trying to watch the match, which IS distracting, they could just live stream the footage onto a screen away from the table.
I know they're 2 different games with 2 different audiences (supposedly) but the Pokemon Company could REALLY do with taking a few more tips (in many areas) from the, y'know, longest running and biggest money making card game ever >_> They just ride on the back of the VGs popularity and peoples nostalgia too much, more could be done quite easily and cheaply.

This goes with why dont they have a Pokemon store at Nationals selling stuff. It would be like printing money for them. Still a mystery to me.

Or tripling their order (and 50% price increase) of Worlds exclusive stuff. License to print monies.

Has anyone noticed how exciting the VGC gets? Thats because it is more spectator friendly, by having TVs set up showing the matches. I really which they would do it like at worlds, however they need to move the scream so the competitors can't sneak a peek at each others hands.

What I don't understand is why it took so long for Pokemon to get back to The Top Cut on whether they could record or not. From what I understand, Pokemon was contacted before Nats, didn't respond back, then still didn't respond on Thursday or Friday and only got back to TTC late Friday. If you're not going to let them record at least let them know.
