Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

US Nationals Dates, Participation Requirements formally announced

That's not been announced nor asked I don't believe.

I would suspect that if you have a Bye at Nats (1 or 2 round) that you would be automatically qualified to play in Nats even if you do not have the Play! Points required.

That said, I have to question why "you" would want to only show up to a regionals, be good enough to win just that regionals and then play nothing more all season till Nats.

And if that is the case, given Pokemon's stated direction with the Play! Points, I'm wondering if in fact they wouldn't want to keep "you" out.

I guess it depends upon what the intent is. If they only want to keep people out who haven't played before (or keep the T-Shirt Droppers away) then I would guess a bye at states / regionals would auto-qualify. If they want to reward/force participation (the other big issue last year and the other reason I thought they put Play! Points in) throughout the season then they may not.

well the reason for that is because i cant go to a league cause is the 90 min's away
You aren't going to any BRs? Any Cities? Any States? Another Regs?

There are TONS of opportunities to get points, it's not really that hard at all.

I like the new Play Point restriction. It's obviously a good protocol to keep hardcore players in the event, and keep Beginners who would most likely be way out of their league there or people who show up get the prizes and drop out just to get their hands on the exclusive freebies just to sell on eBay for a dirty profit.

Some may see it being hard on Beginners, however I believe if you are a Beginner, you need to work up the road from the beginning of the season. I returned to the game after 5 years last Spring and had no intentions of wanting to compete in 2011 Nationals considering my rust in experience and my severely small collection of usable cards at the time.

Now I can only wonder how effective it will be to just require play points, and how long will it take before Nationals becomes even harder to get into, such as asking for a single Championship point.

I do not like the idea of Open Video Game Nationals, because I have observed the video game community is always more dominant than the TCG community in terms of numbers, and may overrun the event.

They didnt let Ash compete in the big tourney yr 1 until he got the 8 gym leader badges! Just sayin' ;)

I find 10 points hard to come by for the Bigger Event. I live in an area where the closest tournements or leagues are at least 2+ hours away. Im a great player, having made it through the Grinder 2 times, and done well at nationals multiple times, but the thought of having to drive to 10 brs, maybe 5 cc's and not being able to attend regionals (which are 8-10 hrs) away isnt making it easy.

My point is this, what about the players who live in areas (like myself) that dont have much going to do?

^VGC gets like over 500 at Regionals, correct? (And If memory servers, one Regional had more players than our Nationals) I agree that they are going to overrun us at Nats. Hope they have a bigger room this year.

VGC Regionals were much larger events in the last few years. They were held once per weekend over six weekends rather than all at once. There were large banners, event Pokemon (in '10 at least), and televisions set up. I know people who went to multiple events as well. They were almost Nationals level. The regionals this year will likely see a smaller VGC turnout as people are much more spread out and cannot attend multiple events. They're also much less important as a Nationals invite is not required anymore.

TCG floorspace was more than double VGC at last year's US Nationals. There are far more players there for TCG than VGC. We are definitely louder than the TCG crowd though ;D

While on the whole I'm glad with the announcement, I'm personally not pleased with the Play Points entry requirement. My brother and I enjoyed our trip to Indianapolis two years ago and were planning on making a return this summer, however, the imposition of a Play Points requirement to participate in the main event has likely changed this. I see no purpose in going to the ball merely to sample the punch.

Do you go to League? Can you play in ANY Premier events? If you can answer YES to either of these questions, you've likely got enough.

10 play points is bad at all. i think its pretty fair for other areas who do not have 15 battleroads and 10 citys and reginals dont forget you can go to 3 states this year.

You forgot less than States. :lol:

We don't know what States are going to be yet. Here's what we know...

BRs = 1
Regionals = 5

That's it. That's everything that we know.

On a completely different train of thought, has anybody reserved their hotel yet? I've been searching, and I'm finding $119 at the Marriott, as well as under $120 at the downtown hotels. I don't really want to put in a Priceline request yet, cuz I don't wanna be driving or walking for miles to get to the place. Has anybody seen cheaper on Convention Center hotels yet?
