Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

US Nationals Moved...

Ah but that's where you're wrong. It does affect others. How about those who are interested in judging from other countries. Do you think it wouldn't affect me if I wanted to go? I live north of Toronto, and it's now further away for me, but I welcome the chance to go there this year now that it's a pokemon only event. I've been to many other conventions with lots of different other attendees from other games, anime, cosplay etc, and believe me, this will be a great relief for me - even though I have to travel further. Just because someone has an opinion doesn't mean they have to agree with yours, Darth Pika, or anyone else's. I think Mysterything said it best in his post. Get over yourselves already. It's moved - I really hate to say this, but I think you should just deal with it. Roll with the punches. It's much better to remain calm about life's problems. You never know, perhaps between now and then you'll find a new source of joy in this decision, or a new source of income to go, or a really good friend to go with, or stay with while you're there, who knows? Canadian Nats changover to the west was quite a eye opener for many over here in Ontario. And players from Alberta found a great solution to make it work. Good for them I say. Let's hope that this event is well received, and pokemon in general gets a good name from it. You can be part of the problem, or part of the solution - which would you rather be?

It's a great idea! Here's why,
1. Not having to pay 70 bucks for a free event.
2. Not having to walk that loooooooog hall ( unless you paid 150 a night for the hampton.)
3. not having to deal with origins staff. How many of you got to origins to find they couldn't find your badge.....
4. It will be like worlds, a whole pokemon experence. We always hold better events when we do it all ourselves.
5. More centrally located. For those who have further than you did the past 10 years, quit griping. I drive 13 hours to get there every year with a van full of kids.
6. A change will be nice.
7. origins has been losing games for the past few years. Anyone notice that the vendor hall was only a little more than half full, with most of that being pokemon vendors? ( and the big play sword fighting arena. I will miss that.....)
8. Gives you all something new to gripe about here!
See ya in St. Looie!

I'm going to miss Origins.

I might even look for a reason in my near future to visit Columbus.

PUI clearly identified a need for change, they are professionals attempting their best to operate logically. Truth be told, none of us have access to more relevant information than they do. When will we all have more information? After they've tried something different. Not just after its been suggested, but after we see real results. So lets all cross our fingers and hope for as smooth a Nationals as last year.

For anyone who wants to go on about this, crying, kicking, screaming, please don't. Well thought out, constructive, and sincere comments will help everyone most.

St. Louis is a great town! I am glad they picked it. I travel there on business trips and find the restaurants wonderful, the airport is easy to get in and out of, plus the Mississippi River offers different tourist opportunities. My family has been to baseball games there, toured the Budweiser brewery, and went up in the "Arch." With so much to do, I'll be taking my whole family to Nationals this year. My son and I will play while my wife and daughter can enjoy the city.

Good move IMO.

BTW - Jason does need anyone to defend him, but based on the quality of his contributions to the game and the fact he used real data to discuss the issue - he is as welcome as anyone to comment on the subject.:thumb:

I'm not gonna go into a long winded whiny-complainy tirade as to how this move is going to be an epic failure (another debate for another day), but to put it very simply, barring winning a trip to Nats *that, coupled with my new job possibly hindering my ability to make it to Regionals much less win it*, I will be at Origins.

POP did survey folks 3 years ago at Nats.
Columbus or St. Louis ?? Believe it or not, Nashville is more center to the Midwest and East Coast Population centers. West Coast folks aren't driving to St Louis or Columbus, so they don't count. This link is a good map of the Population centers in the US.

I will miss the Origins, and I did enjoy the fact that I have most of Origins figured out. I will miss the extra days that we got at Origins. This made it more fun, more pokemon, more pokemon. Hope there will be some local tournaments on Thursday!!! (Hint Hint Vince)

Can't people just show up 1-2 days early? If you could do it for Origins why can't you do it for the new location? Or am I missing something?

Last year was my first time to Origins / Nats. It was cool, but at the same time, I do not have the memories of previous years to cling to.

The one thing I really enjoy about Pokemon is the ability to travel to places that I have never been to, or have not been to in years.

Outside of Colorado events, I traveled to Anaheim, CA (World's '06), Columbus, OH (Nats '08), Orlando, FL (World's '08).

This year, I am traveling much more, as I am going to NM for their States, TX for Regionals, MO for Nats, and CA for Worlds.

The thing I love is seeing new parts of the country, seeing my Poke friends, and making new friends, & learning new / better ways to judge and Staff events.

I think this will be good, not only for the players, but for Pokemon as a brand. We will not have to share the spotlight with any other games or players, just us and the other Pokemon players.

All I can say, is if this makes you not come to Nats, well, you will be missed. But I am pretty sure those chairs that you usually use will not be empty.

I love visiting new parts of the country too, but sadly, money isn't in the best situation for me. I'm hoping when I graduate in a few months, I can get a decent job that will let me have that time off that quickly. I'd love to be able to go to Nats and Worlds this year, but getting a job and an income is a little bit more important to me right now.

Now, I'm honestly not upset about the area change. In all honesty, Origins wasn't the best place for Nats and putting this in another area as a stand alone is great. As someone who has seen other TCG Nats being held at separate events, I can tell you it works. Really well.

My biggest issue is the date. Has anyone checked that against some other major times.

Yeah, those three days are the EXACT same time as Origins.

I can understand being upset with how GAMA ran things last year. I can understand wanting to move to another area. But when you schedule your biggest events against the major gaming conventions in the US and the World (now Origins and GenCon Indy), your basically taking the rest of the gaming crowd and saying, "No thanks. We don't need you or your stupid trade company." It's like taking your employer and slapping them across the face.

There are those of us who play Pokemon and also play OTHER GAMING SYSTEMS!!! I apologize to the rest of you who play only Pokemon and don't understand this, but I play about two other gaming systems pseudo-competitively and volunteer for another company at Origins (more on that later). There are those of us who come to Origins for other games but also for Pokemon as well. Is it our fault that we don't have Pokemon as our sole devotion in gaming? Not really, we just like to focus on more than one system. moving Nats opposite a big con simply states that Pokemon doesn't need "other gaming crowds" to help them. They just want to go out on their own and abandon us at Origins.

What do I mean by this? With the date of Origins and US Nats on the same day, the distributors at Origins are going to take a HUGE hit. Many vendors depend on the Pokemon crowd to boost their sales. And these are just your Troll and Toad and whatnot. The regular, upstart gaming companies depend on newer players to try, demo, and buy their games at these big cons to survive. With this HUGE wave of people leaving, many of those vendors are going to struggle to break even again. This is just not cool.

The first year (for sure one, maybe two) that UDE said toodles to Origins, Yu-Gi-Oh Nationals were on the same weekend as Origins.

In Columbus. Just down the street.

What POP is doing is NOTHING compared to that. UDE scheduled their events so that you could only really do one or the other, and they also did it in a position that took up a fairly large chunk of Origins' "reserved" hotel space. How many YGO players do you think used the Origins rooms rates but went to YGO Nationals instead? At least POP isn't interfering with Origins.

As for saying that they're screwing the other distributors, well, they're a business. They want your money, and they don't want other people to get your money. They don't want competition, so "oh no, we're stopping people from demoing products that aim to compete with us" probably wasn't a chief concern when they were discussing this move. And comparing it to slapping your employer is just brutally inaccurate. I hate to break it to you, but POP really probably doesn't need GAMA to survive.

Anyways, what other date would you prefer they hold it? They barely got Worlds invited processed and sent out for the 2008 Worlds as it was, so moving it forward a week is clearly out of the question. And if you move it any further into June, you risk interfering with final exams at schools and making it so people can't go because of that.

Argue location all you want. But Origins has done nothing to make themselves look attractive to POP that last few years, and there really isn't any other options when it comes to dates.

P.S. I'm sure MATTICUS CHINNETH will be sad he can't go to the halls for some anime stuff tho. ;P

Actually Tyler, I'm pretty happy about this. I don't have to adjust to eastern time. Though I wonder if giving the east coast an extra hour of sleep will give them an advantage when tourney time hits? Either way, I'll just buy anime stuff at sakuracon and video game stuff at PAX.

I didn't like getting mixed in with all the origins attendees, they really got in the way of the whole thing. I didn't like origins, I have bigger, better conventions to attend closer to home, and anything I could have done at origins I could easily do at these other conventions. I also didn't like paying 50 bucks for a convention I didn't particularly feel at home in. If I really had a say, we should have gotten free nats attendance all along. If you wanted to see the rest of origins, pay for the ticket. But it was a complete waste to go to a subpar convention simply for me to attend pokemon nats. And yes, to me origins was a complete crapfest of a convention. I also didn't enjoy Columbus, there wasn't anything to do there besides the convention. At least here there's a six flags, and some nice missouri barbeque.

This new location is much better for me. It's closer, jetlag isn't as bad, airfare and hotel are probably going to be cheaper, and I save money on my event ticket.

Erm...why not have any of the known league locations near the American centre to be run full day from Monday (during the store hours) until end of Thursday?

I'll bet you that PUI is already looking at getting something together for Wednesday and Thursday before Nationals.
