I tried to not say anything, because when I do open my mouth, it ends bad most the time. but here I go....
Ok, first and foremost, I am a Ohio player, but I would feel this way if I was a Cali player or whatever. I don't like the move, but not because its no longer a convince for myself and my friends here, but because I truly believe that attendance was going to go down. Origins was not just Pokemon, but just about every other game out their. 4 days of gaming, and new experiences. Yes, the majority of Pokemon players are solely playing Pokemon, but what about parents of brothers and sisters that play other games. Its perfect if lets say I was a parent, and my kids played Pokemon, and I played Magic, and they were holding a Big Magic event at Origins. It would be perfect, were all happy.
I think the location is a good one, but I think it should not conflict with Origins. I also believe that Nat's SHOULD be at a Convention, its much more diverse.
I think part of the move was space. Pokemon needed more space, I think they should of taken half the TCG room. Their would still be plenty of room for all the other games, with plenty of room for Pokemon players. Last year, during Nat's, WOTC(PES) and Bandai were under distress when we were invading their gaming areas. They were trying to run their events, but they couldn't. PUI did everything in their power to help, but 900+ ppl are hard to control, but even so some players ignored them. I am sure Bandai and/or PES talked to GAMA about what happen, and wanted something done about 09.
I think its a huge mistake because of the way Pokemon got around at Origins. 2 years ago, due to prior obligations, I could not play in any Pokemon Events, but did attend Origins. I went around the Vendor hall, to a Vendor I know from Gen Con(Where Pokemon gets NO love) and he was shocked at how Pokemon was. He had NO idea that it was this big. I told him "Yeah 700+ players, the game is FAR from dead, as MANY PEOPLE THINK."
Last year, I saw him again, and he said he started a Pokemon League at his store and it was going great. 07 to 08, if you looked at the Vendor hall, their was more Vendors Sell/Buying/Trading Pokemon cards. A Convention gets your name out their, and shows that the game is alive and booming.
I also think, and this is just the quick version, because so much planning would need to be involved, but maybe the U.S. needs 2 Nat's. I know, I know, its called 'Nationals' for a reason. But I think the country has the player base to support it. One towards the West Coast, and one towards the East cost, and THEY BOTH SHOULD BE AT A CONVENTION! This would make both sides of the country happy, and the players in the middle could decided what is closest. Now many details would be needed, and their are many flaws with this too, I understand and KNOW THIS, so don't go into the flaws with this, I see them, but hey, PUI's current plan is not perfect.
But I think they are making a mistake. I think they will see that the number of players will drop, and I hope next year, they change their decision about moving it away from a convention.
