Or the pro-Pokémon player appearing in a game that is meant to be casully competitive?

Or a mixing of several reasons?

I would say from what I have heard from inside WotC, BJJ is much closer to the mark, but it was more than one or two incidents.

I did say it was an over simplification :-D

The managing Director for Hasbro Europe went on record with his desire to get rid of Pokemon. IIRC Its about two hours into the 4 hour company report on the Hasbro website. I listened to the whole thing for clues during the impending license renewal. It wasn't very encouraging for WotC retaining pokemon.

If mis-behaviour by the 15+ group in the USA caused the demise of OP for that group then how long before the same thing happens again under PUI/Nintendo? Not something I wish to contemplate .
