Ways to Approach the Game

Pot, meet kettle.

This thread has been full of pompous exchanges and one-ups one after the other.

I can only break down your arguments in the simplest psychological way: you design a deck featuring cards you find under-appreciated in a meta format because you, the player, feel unappreciated. You swear that your method is the best because you play with it which makes you, and only you, feel superior; superior because you are different from the mainstream, even though you can't run with them in the meta-fields, that bit of pride is comforting. With all that pride you see your proclaimed red-face-powder deck and your methods as an extension of your superior personality to such an unreasonable extreme that you have to post about how great you, your deck, and your methods are, on the internet.

Here is the best way to approach the game, no matter what your level of play, skill, or self-preceived level of greatness you have:

  • Walk up to your opponent
  • Great them and prepare for a battle
  • Fight to the last Pokemon
  • Shake hands, practice the spirit of the game, etc
  • Don't get all high and mighty about what you do

If you want to play a rooooogue deck or whatever meta is going to be, there's nothing wrong with that -but when you put something on a pedestal like that you just become a bad sport and a bad person to play a game with.

If that was true, meta players just want to fit with everyone else, and rogues want to feel special and appreciated by metas and not other rogues. Both sides are seeking respect for the most sick selfish reasons.

Approach the game should be done just to have fun, not to achieve a lifestyle.

I never said that I'm superior to anyone in any way.

Seriously? You even agreed to it.

So, on to the list, you say that..

Playing meta makes us unable to think for ourselves
Playing meta is like cheating
Playing meta ruins the game
Winning with meta decks is not "true winning"
Playing meta is a problem and against SOTG
Winning with meta decks is lower than dirt

. About that list... Sounds about right.

The basic point isn't that everyone just netdecks and plays meta automatically. We all at least try and be open to possible deck combos I've looked at vap/pgt just because you mentioned it. That doesn't mean I tried to build it, I just theorymoned it around in my head for awhile.

I don't think it will work.

But that doesn't mean I didn't consider it. I didn't just go right to magneboar or donchamp or other meta. I go to leagues and DO test fun decks and to the best of my ability my genius idea of hypno/musharna didn't stand up to some of my friends decks ie what's probably going to become the meta. Hypno/musharna is a rogue and though it can beat magneboar on the whole it doesn't and my testing has shown no matter how I tweak it it won't have a winning percentage against meta.

There is only so much you can do before it doesn't work anymore and then you can either give up and move on to another deck idea and start testing it.

Or you can be vaporeon and claim against reason that it does win (albeit only 25% of the time) and act like you're the righteous rogue player when really you just adamantly stand against reason and can't accept that if you truly play to win then you might have to play a different deck in order to win.

I'd like to take this post to thank the mods for allowing this somewhat turbulant discussion, as I feel it's healthy for the players to be able to debate.

That said, I must also agree with PokeMedic's post.

To put a sort of new spin on things, what would people say to making a new low-level event with a sealed pool? That way, it's not a huge amount of points, but good deck creation is rewarded. Something like a k-8 value event with 40 cards decks and a restriction of a randomly selected card pool, with maybe say something like 1/3rd of the cards in format allowed, and the other 2/3rds banned, and then changing it for the next event, or something like that. That addresses Vaporeon's (somewhat true) complaints that true deck building ability is not directly rewarded in any major event, except perhaps the battle roads directly following a format change.

How to Approach Pokemon TCG

1. Start with a reliable overplayed deck archetype
2. Play with the deck in a couple of tournaments and see how it works
3. Playtest rogue ideas against the said archetype
4. Know your limitations for the deck and tweaking it
5. Know the rulings ahead of time
6. Make sure you don't get energy drought in a tournament!

How not to play

1. Bring a deck with no energy to a tournament
2. Bring a large plastic coin with a rock taped to the tails side

That's all I could think of right now...

I haven't read through the entire thread, but the most successful approach I've had with the game is to find a balance between what you think can win and what you feel most comfortable using. If you're ruling out playing certain cards for silly reasons, you're just hurting your chances to win. However, if you're just playing for fun, it's a completely different story.

I don't like netdecking someone else's list card-for-card but at the same time I don't mind playing a decktype that someone else has already made. Normally I try to find out what playstyle works out for me in these kinds of games, find the deck that fits that playstyle, then try to compose a list myself by looking through all the card possibilities.

If my list ends up turning into Johnny Boy's after hours of playtesting then so be it. At least I'll feel more comfortable with the deck because I have actually tested different versions of it.

I say amen! Amen to sharing decktypes and down with the netdeckers. :thumb:

I like playing meta decks or top tier decks that not a lot of people play. I like having a somewhat diverse format, but i dont want there to be 10+ top tier decks which usually doesnt happen. Also it comes down to what you have success with and what you are comfortable with.
