Who was the first World Champ??

SteveP: Yeah, that was so funny. So much for match play. :D

The Professor Cup during Worlds 2002 was basically the first 15+ World Championship though. Despite that some insane Hasbro/Wotc marketing people liked to market us as "Professors" and not players (as opposed to players AND Professors now ^_^), we were players. And we played at Worlds in a big tourney together. It was our Worlds. Btw, you beat me in the Swiss rounds, remember (erm, I mean "one of the rounds". There was only Swiss)? :) I still made Top 16, though. ^^

I tablejudged the -10 finals in 2002, along with Elaine Chase...and heard about the 11-14 final match misplays afterwards...o.o

Drew: Jason never won an STS, but he finished 2nd in one (to Tom Hanley, a back-to-back winner).

Wizards had major international tournaments, but only called one of them a "World Championships" and never crowned a 15+ World Champion.

I'm inclined to count the TMBs. Yes, they were smaller than other Worlds we have had, but they will compare pretty closely to the upcoming Worlds 07.

While the STSs were important, and some did include foreign invitees, I don't know if they quite rose to the level of Worlds.

Pop: I'd be inclined to say the exact opposite! The first TMB was played in a really weird format that allowed almost no preparation. I believe a scavanger hunt was part of the activities as well. The mood was not intense competition.

The STSs on the other hand were where people prepared months and traveled from all around the world to compete. It reminds me very much of Worlds, except with massive turnouts of people. The competition was fierce and players who have done well at STSs continue to do well today, validating the level of excellence.

Back in the day, the tournament everyone was preparing for all season was the next STS. Nowadays, the tournament everyone is preparing for all season is Worlds. Both were international, both had trips, and both were dominated by very good players. I don't see how you can say one is different than the other, besides in name.

As a first-hand observer of TMB 2001, let me state that the atmosphere was more casual than Worlds. The players were decent, but like Moss stated, the formats was unusual (VS pre-constructed decks for swiss and limited constructed decks for the playoffs).

I commend JasonK on winning the TMB, but his "real" accomplishment came this year as the World Champ, the first-ever to win a 15+ Worlds with an EX deck! He was EXTREMELY lucky EricC wasn't able to get out his Ray* in Top 8! Nevertheless, he played well throughout the whole tournament; although, once he got past Eric, it was smooth sailing to the Trophy.

In this case, a rose by any other name wouldn't smell as sweet.

Both were international, both had trips,

Technically, all tournaments (except Nationals and a few other geographically resticted tournaments) are international.

The fact is the event is not a world championship unless billed as such (try to extend the analogy made by some who think the TMB or STS are world events by extending the analogy to lower levels of competition-you can argue that people have been running city championships for almost 8 years now). WotC/TPC/PUI has/had the right to confer such a title and opted not to on several occcasions.

Besides, the STS was held twice annualy. What kind of world championship do you hold twice a year?

DylanA was the first-ever "official" World champ in 2002 (11-14). He played DarkGatr / Slowking. There was no 15+ tournament at that tournament. Mindy won the 10-under with a "baby-porter" deck (Donphan / babies / Slowking).

"Babyporter" isn't hyphenated, by the way.

Ouch! Winning an STS was quite an accomplishment. But those were back in the days of 1 game playoff matches, Top 8 only, IDs, 2-point wins, and FTKOs. The game has matured since then, and it's much harder now to win a World Championship.

There's no spaces between "by the way," and my name isn't Bytheway!

BTW, does anyone remember in the Championship game when Dylan's opponent misplayed and got a game-loss in game 1? Dylan then made a misplay of his own in the second game and got a game-loss. Game 3 of that match was the only game that was actually ever played to completion.

Wasn't that where one of them got a game-loss for failing to discard a supporter at the end of their turn?

Actually, 4 times a year. The ECSTS and WCSTS were each ran during the year, and each one crowned 2 champions on 2 consecutive days.

Well, still Champions, but I guess we need to stick to actual Worlds events to have a World Champ.

This is sarcasm, right? There were no supporters back then. =/

Dylan used Eeeeeeek against a baby Pokemon and shuffled his hand into his deck before the flip. His opponent did the same, earning each of them game losses. It was a pretty crappy World Championship final.

Yeah, something like that. All I remember is that it was for shuffling your hand into your deck when you should've flipped first. Heck, it could've even been for playing Elm without flipping for Mindgames. Anyway, I remember both contestants crying after receiving the penalty. Dylan's opponent even had to take a "timeout" after his penalty because he was so distraught.

Yep, that was Bryson B. He Eeeeeeek'd against a Dark Feraligatr in game 1. In game 2 Dylan played Prof. Elm and shuffled his hand into his deck before Bryson got a chance to flip for his Slowkings.

Trivia question... Anybody know who built Dylan's Dark Feraligatr deck for him?

I can confidently say that my World Championship was more legitimate than Dylans! First of all, people say my tournament didn't even have a top cut, but look at the Finals of 11-14. Dylan won game 1 because his opponent got caught CHEATING, and Bryson won game two because he started CRYING, and the judges felt BAD for him! THIS IS NOT HOW THE GAME WAS INTENDED TO BE PLAYED! I'm the only real 2002 World Champ! THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME POKEGYM!

You mean " baby lock"?

I know ;)

Dumbest thing i EVER did! W/out question!

Steve STILL gives me crap about it lol

You won't live that down John. But I still remember him coming on the boards saying that he came up with that deck himself.
