I just think it's because it's like the original.
It's a program that was made by the first major company for the internet.
Because of this, and its simple age, AIM is far more widespread than the others.
When you've got AOL also, like me, you can either have AIM run in the same program as the internet, or download AIM by itself, and run the 2 separately. I personally like how you can run the 2 simultaneously without having to keep switching between programs. The AIM that comes along with AOL doesn't have all the extra features like File Share, etc, but that's why you can download AIM by itself.
I don't have any plans of getting any other program than AIM.
