Kill the game? Sure. Kill their profits? No.
I seriously doubt that OP doesn't account for a lot of sales. They probably account for more sales than ever before. I think there's less people who simply buy cards to collect. Without a tournament structure, (even just cities and Pre's), I think A LOT of people would simply stop buying cards.Moss Factor said:For what its worth, I'm willing to bet that the vast majority of card sales are by non-OP participants. Removing OP wouldn't kill the game or likely severely injure the game's profits. Can a well-produced OP build a great game and turn out higher profits in the long-run? Absolutely. However, I don't think we're there yet.
Burninating_Torchic said:Yes, I do. Yugioh's popularity has been declining for quite some time now. Here are some signs.
1. The set production of Yugioh has rapidly increased. They're now producing new sets much faster than they did when they first started. This is a tactic used by many card games, including but not limited to Neopets and .Hack//Enemy, to try and recover players that they are losing.
Moss Factor said:I seriously doubt Worlds will ever be held outside of the USA. The fact of the matter is, PUI is a US-based company. In order to hold a huge event outside the US, they'd need to follow the laws of said other country. Scholarships won would have taxes paid to the host country. Release waivers, trip waivers, everything would be done in the other country's legal system. Currently PUI and all the laywers it hires know US laws, and everything they do is in the realms of US policy. I don't see them doing a massive upheaval, personally. Its much more complicated than just finding a good hotel.
I thought the EX's were Pokemon on Steroids?! LOL!!David's Confused Pokedad said:I once heard someone say it would be in Japan in 2008. No one official. We had planed on going to China in 2008 for the Olympics. But now that I am hooked into this game if they had Worlds in Japan we would go. Pokemon is much bigger than the Olympics and its not on Steriods.
David's Confused Pokedad said:We use to go to yugioh every weekend. Now its pokemon. We still go to Yugioh prerelease. In Dec. on a ice road condition and the threat of closing the highways down over 400 kids came to the prerelease. Last month on a beautiful day the prerelease didn't make it to 90 people. So either Yugioh is dying or kids like to get outside and play on beautiful days. We would not have gotten in to pokemon if it were not for OP. And if OP were to stop than David would just play baseball full time.

IMO, this change in structure will result in a lot of US players leaving the game, because they don't think they have a chance at Worlds any more. The US is where Pokemon makes most of its money - and if the money they make here is significantly reduced, budget cuts will be in order...worlds will become smaller and smaller.
It's a vicious cycle. As worlds grows smaller, people start quitting. As people start quitting, worlds grows smaller.
Eventually, there will be no worlds, and quite possibly, no Pokemon TCG.
