Worlds Travel Award - Malaysia

Everyone who plays this game competitively want to have a chance to play at worlds. 2 years ago and prior to that, Malaysians who placed first at Nationals were awarded with a trip to worlds in each division. The runner up received invites to play in the tournament. Right now, we only get invites for top 2. Even if we get top 10 CP in Asia Pacific, we only get invites. Nothing is paid for.

Malaysia in general has small earning power compared to other established countries. It would take a lot for us to pay for a trip to get to worlds and cover other expenses.

As far as I know, there are only a few other countries that aren't provided with travel awards. I think they're Chile, Belgium and Philippines. I might be wrong.

Other than getting recognition at major events such as worlds and increment of sales in our country, what can we do to get a travel award?

To be honest, playing this game without a chance to play at worlds and without spending a fortune is basically just being aimless. A travel award will do so much for the PTCG community here. Players will get more competitive, players who retired would come back to play the game and even the number of players in general will increase. This is all due to the fact we have a chance to get a free trip to play in the main event of the game we all love.

Can we do anything to have a chance?

A player from Portugal posted this in another thread:
Portugal is a small country, and our Pokémon Community isn't as big as many other countries we hear about. We can't even compare to a country like USA, because when your tournaments reach 200 players ours reach 15 at most.

Frankly speaking, the turnout at Malaysian Nationals were 60+ for Masters. Clearly the number of players isn't an issue, right? A country averaging 15 players at tournaments and still receiving travel awards?

I think that every National Champion should get a travel award regardless of how big their Nats is. Having all the National Champions at Worlds would be great.

I dunno why you don't have travel awards for Malaysia . . . seems like you have a decent player base.

Saying that though, there are plenty of reasons to play apart from winning a trip. The overwhelming majority of players in every country will never win one and don't really expect to either. I assume they don't think that playing is 'aimless'.

If I'm reading correctly, are you saying that even the National Champion doesn't get a travel award? That would be a complete bummer...

Everyone plays this game because they enjoy it. But every game has a main prize. I said aimless because, we're not going to have the chance to compete for that main prize.

Just like every athlete would want a chance to compete in the Olympics. Being capable to win (or not), doesn't matter. What matters is having the chance to compete in it.

That is correct, it has been that way since 2010. That was the last year.

Aren't the existence of travel awards decided on by the distributor in each country? I could be wrong, but I thought I read that somewhere years ago.

By distributor, do you mean the main company that's distributing Pokemon Cards in the particular country?

You guys should definetely have a travel award. However, if your main motivation to playing is "I hope I win nats so I can go to worlds" I don't think that's gonna hold very far. Winning the paid trip is very hard even in small countries (player base wise). I would recommend you save up some money and try to aim for an invite. And if you end up winning the trip, great! But I would view that as a bonus and nothing else.

in malaysia our masters players are based around 40 players about 15 seniors and 8 juniors

from what my TO told me last year, we have to achieve the 80 player tournament thing for like a year till we get our travel awards back.also there was a change of the TO in 2011 so exactly since then there were no travel awards given to 1st placers.

at this point of two years of not having any travel awards we have only had one player playing this year at worlds a senior player who did pretty ok at worlds

Malaysia is a pretty big country, I find it hard to imagine that you guys can't hit 80 per tournament... do you guys have good support for your local leagues? Or are your booster packs there extremely expensive that people don't find it worthwhile to play?

lemme tell u something
back in 2007 we had a 100 player base all that went out the window with the release of D/P(idk why lol) and
also the old TO charges a skyhigh fee on all premier events which prevents majority of the 100 players from coming back into the game. our player base fell and fell till 2011 in which we rebuilt it back to 60.but if we could get the original number.that could be alot better.
the new TO's are doing thier level best to bring it to an 80 player base.our boosters are priced at 4$ each that would be around 12 malaysian ringgits.which seems pretty ok.i guess.
the rate we are going right now, we should get the travel awards back

Malaysian Nationals 2011
JR : 7
SR : 17
MA : 36

Malaysian Nationals 2012
JR : 6
SR : 4
MA : 37

Just putting some numbers out there. We need more kids.

You could also ask around for outside corporate support. I know some large companies do charity work (like Honda etc), and you can discuss with them the merits of supporting interest in a "child's game". Might be a long shot, but even here in Canada, there are companies that regularly give charitable donations to organizations and people involved with children. I realize this might not be what you're asking for, but without a substantial amount of sales in your market, TPCi may not feel able to fully support an organized play in your area. That doesn't make it right - or wrong either. There's been comments made to show that organized play is built where there are enough sales to warrant it (mind you, a case can be made to show if there is an organized play, then people will buy more), but in the meantime, any charitable donation or corporate support would be better than your current situation, right?
