Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

You play Pokémon? Pfffttt...

Hey,

I'm extremely ashamed to say that last year ( when I was in the 7th grade) I was joking around/ making fun of my friend who played pokemon. He is a great kid and just said to me, " why don't you come over to my house today, and I'll show you what pokemon TCG is all about." We talked for about three hours, and I made a deck. I instantlly fell in love with the game. Now, it's pretty cool to play in my school.

If someone does make fun of you just try to explain pokemon to them. Pokemon TCG is a game of strategy. It isn't just for little kids. Obviously, Amphy#1 was just explaining to you what NOT to do because resorting to physical violence is beyond stupid.

I know that ingnoring is tough, but just try to not listen to them, and explain what it is all about, and who knows; maybe they'll end up playing.

I keep it quiet at school. Mostly, people that don't like you for playing Pokemon are either hypocrites or don't like the way that you present the fact that you like Pokemon. Like, someone may not like you if it is openly apparent that you LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVEEEEE Pokemon, but my motto is: "Keep it quiet, keep it [your reputation] safe."

I'm a senior in highschool and i carry around a pokeball lunchbox. The people that make fun of you are normally the dumb, popular, jockish kids. They're also the ones who will prolly be working at McDonalds for the rest of their lives after highschool. They may get a laugh now but you're better off int he long run.

I am a strong believer in the right to self defense, but what I'm saying is that you have made several post about physical harm. And now what's worse is that you think it's funny.

That worries me. I don't want to derail this thread, though, so I'm going to leave it at that.

Come on, wouldn't be funny if they got beat up by a Pokemon player?

I don't want him to fight at all, but if they are the type of people that will start trouble then these three things should happen

1. Tell them the perks of playing Pokemon
2. Ignore them
3. If they touch him then ........

Three strikes you're out!!

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

wow, i thought this was going to get locked because of bashing! thanks for pulling it back!

No one's really bashing here. Some of us just disagree a bit about how to help you out thats all. Trust me, if I was bashing people in this thread, then it would be worse than this beleive it.

Lol, being popular or good at sports doesn't mean you wont succeed in life.

Ya, but stereotypes are easy to use in examples.

And completely valid in all instances! I ♥ stereotypes!

Protip, if you're worried about getting teased, keep it your little secret. Don't tell anyone you don't think won't understand why you enjoy it and accept the fact. In other words, don't wear it on your sleeve if you're not willing to bear the consequences.

Funny. I played at least half a dozen random people in pickup games on my college campus yesterday, and there was some surprising interest.

I play at my student union outside of the bowling alley/game room/pool hall where eyes can see. I've had people come up to me in the middle of games saying "Holy crap, I used to play that game all the time as a kid."

In college, people just stop caring about stupid stereotypes and cliques because its time to start growing up. In High School, its pressure, and wanting to be cool. Get around that psychological issue. Be above the immature kids of that era.

And I highly doubt any idiot worth his brain would even touch you for playing Pokemon. The worst you'll get would be some stupid remarks that you can shrug off. I've never seen anyone get beat up involving Pokemon unless its two people that play and one person beats the other one up to steal the others cards. Savages.

Not all of said people are like this. Again, a lot of people mature after high school, and theres also very little evidence to back up your claim. This is not to say your statement is wrong, as I do know some people like this who do carry really crappy jobs right now, but I know even more with college degrees earning crazy good salary right now. Its the dedication of the person, not the attitude.

That being said, don't be afraid to admit your habits. Even doing so proves you have more balls than the star QB who still sleeps with a teddy bear and will deny it to look cool in front of all his friends.

That's how i handle it too. i will tell people if they ask me what i do for fun or along those lines, but i won't just walk into a room and declare i play pokemon for no reason.

also stereotypes are great to prove wrong. i'm a big anime fan and in my senior year in high school i ran cross country. for some reason the whole team was at my car and my music was playing. one of the guys asked what was playing and i told him japanese music. i answered yes, and another one said if it was that 'anime crap'. i replied yes again. some of the guys started laughing and said i was a nerd and things like that. i laughed with them and said, "i know i'm such a nerd huh? but how's it feel to lose to a nerd, week after week?" they shut up after that.

so even if you get mocked for playing a "children's game", ignore it, and twist it to your advantage like i did or explain to them about the prizes or something like that.

I avoided being made fun of by being very open with with my obsession. Although I tend to agree with Naki that it seems to be somewhat "cool" to enjoy pokemon, some people do to find it lame. I dunno, for me it helped to have a group of people who played at my school and we would play any chance we got (we even got a teacher to play with us at one point). Even now that I'm in college, my friends and I play around campus and garner generally favorable reactions. At worst people react with the annoying, yet ever present, "DO YOU HAVE A CHARIZARD CARD?!"

My best advice is to just shrug off those people who mock you, and stick with those that you know you can trust. Pokemon should be fun, and if anyone makes it anything other than that, they just don't understand.

My advice would be to say how much money is involved. Most people probably think it's like 5 packs for being the world champion. Then while there doing their job you can play Pokemonz and get money! If not just ignore them. And if they still don't leave you alone find out stuff they do. Sometimes they can be playing something just as childish ( I'm not saying Pokemon is BTW). Simples.

^ I agree with this, if there's money involved its hardly laughable.

Most guys I hang out with understand. But last time a girl found out she hardly spoke to me though, she was like "How long will it take you to grow up and stop playing that?" After that, I been kinda hesitant about letting girls know, lol. Even on Facebook I try to keep that subject under the rug ._. But last time I was at the girl's house, I was looking through her DS games and found Pokemon Pearl and I got all excited lol. I bet you'd be surprised how many people actually are interested in Pokemon. It doesn't sell big numbers for no reason.

I think the way Pokemon has been presented in the media has made it a stereotypical kids game. I've heard in Japan it's been viewed with a more adult overtone, I mean they even refer to them as Pocket Monsters there. No one here really knows that, besides those who play the game.

always when people say "aahahaha, you play POKEMON, thats a game for children" i say "did you go to America" (i live in Europe and it is kinda expensive to go to America) most times they say "no, did you??" and then i say "yes, for free" and then they are like like OMG

Lol its funny how people react to pokemon players. Normally if I tell someone there cool about then start talking about how awesome the old cards where and start to remember where they have all there old cards at lol and if someone makes fun of me wich is rare , I tell them how much money I can get for possibly winning tourneys and then ask so what have you done latley ... they shut up by then lol

Pokemon is a retro fad right now, so I don't even see why people in High School/Jr. High even have room to talk about it anymore. I see guys and girls over the age of 20 with Pokemon shirts/hoodies/such and such on campus nowadays and have absolutely no problems with people. Its peer pressure. ignore it.

I suppose its the bane of immaturity. Teenage people like to have things to go after. If you let them go after you with it, then you've lost the battle. Ignore them and express yourself.
retro pokemon is the best. we had the football team and the x-country team (me) playing on our gameboy colors every saturday night, so some people would say that it is childish or nerdy, but when you have people walking in the hallway with gameboy colors and a pokemon red/blue/yellow game in it, you know that it's just plain cool.

Most people do not really care once you are in college, some people in my family do not like me playing Pokémon. But heck usually the people who make fun of you used to play themselves. >.>..

I let almost everyone know that I play pokemon. I don't advertise it to everyone, but after I have known someone for a little while I let them know about it. I have had girlfriends ask to come to pokemon tournaments to see what it's like. I decline tho, it would be very awkward to just stand there doing nothing for them.....
Pokemon is accepted, everyone has their little thing they do, whether its "cool" or not. Xbox is just as "nerdy" as pokemon, and most high school aged boys play Xbox (at least at my school) It's not nerdiness, or weirdness, it's originality and self-expression. It's doing what you like to do no matter what others think about it. If they don't accept it, then who cares? They aren't the judge of your life. So chillllllll. It's all good. And never EVER quit Pokemon over something like this.
