MD gets a grand total of 2, maybe 3 CCs.
I wonder if it has anything to do with that one league falling apart. You know, that league that was offerred to you. Do declined the offer to help grow OP in your area, so stop complaining.

DarthPika, stop trying to punish others because you're unwilling to make an effort.

DarthPika, stop hating on Georgia.

So far, this thread contains eight uses of the word "whine" or some variation thereof.
I'm going to offer DarthPika some cheese.

Tim, I'm still trying to figure out a location to hold league. If I can work something out with my local library, then I'll do it. ATM I have too much going on in my life to get a league started, but I still do want to in the future.

Glad you think Ga. is in my back yard

We drive 6 hours- 1 way- to start the marathon. Then drive an hour or 2 to the next event. Not cheap, and not exactly what I'd call "in my back yard". But I plan for it, manage my business so I can attend several of them and catch up with old friends over Christmas break( and get some points).

So it wouldn't be too much more for you to drive another 10 hours up to New Jersey and see me!

Where's Henny Penny when you need her?
She'd get some BRs and City Championships going in Maryland, I bet!

So once again, the infamous DP crosses my path. Darth, I really wish a PTO lived in Annapolis and could run events just for you. Would you be happy then? Of course not; you'd simply move on to some other avenue to criticize.

I think what the GA folks did was GREAT! Gary is simply amazing and I'm proud to call him a friend. But I guess in your little egocentric universe, since it doesn't benefit YOU it's bad for Organized Play.
Darth, I'm sorry that one of the two PTOs in MD is a store owner who has no interest in putting 25 K on her car in 1 year for OP ... but TOO BAD! Store owner PTOs are an integral part of OP and those of us who aren't S.O. PTOs have learned much about the "business" side of what we do from them.
Then there are those of us who DO spend most weekends on the road racking up the miles (no pun intended). My predecessor didn't do this, but I saw what Jeff was doing down in Carolina, recognized the sacrifices that were being made in the name of growing OP in his state (now states!), and decided to do the same for Virginia OP. I think that my players are quite satisfied with the results.
We will NEVER be Florida here in the midAtlantic and my hat's off to all the players and TOs who have kicked butt down there. Might we someday get enough TOs to put something together like GA?? I'd really love that, and we'd love for you to be a part of it.

Just leave the complaints at home, please.

And sorry, but I do wish pika would just shut up rather then whine the way he does sometimes, so sue me.

I did not imply that Georgia is in your backyard, Mr. Silvestro. What I said was that DarthPika wished that more events were in his backyard, just like many others wish that there were more events in their areas. I recognize that there are a lot of events in Florida, but you still make the trip up to Georgia for the marathon. I know that's a sizable commitment, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that, nor do I think there's anything wrong with the existence of the Georgia marathon.

"All of us wish that there were more events in our backyard" just means "all of us wish that there were more events in our backyard." You shouldn't get "Georgia is in Florida's backyard" from that.

DP's situation was kind of like my situation 6 years in New England, we had like one states and regionals and it was all in Massachusetts over 2 hours away and it was like one each. I was in New Hampshire and there was no Organized Play besides where ever Tom Shea was. Some us finally spoke up and Tom has managed to turn a desolate region into quite possibly one of the best regions for tournament accessibility and gives sooo much to the game that I could never be thankful enough for. For Battle Roads this season we had 2-4 each of the four weekends. Most of them were like in NH or RI or MA, so it was scattered and spread out to where it was like within 2 hours for anyone in the NE region. I'm sure the City Championships will be like the BR's with a few the venues probably not hosting due to the fire codes and the amount of people the stores can hold, as we have already found out about.

RyanVergel- There are like barely any train systems for pokemon. There are no tourneys in Boston itself, most of the tourneys are like a half hour outside of Boston at least, but you do make a valid point about NE, it would be actually interesting if we could utilize that transportation for our tournament accessibility and organizations. Tom's store is actually big enough to handle about 150 players, so we don't need a convention center for Regionals, but I think using the Transit system might be beneficial for some, at least the college students and kids that aren't quite old enough to drive themselves or have parents that either don't want to drive them or don't agree with them playing pokemon.

It just comes down to your PTOs and TO's i'm not that confident of how all the Tourney Organizing is done so I'm not going to pretend like I'm an expert in it, but like honestly Man Up and Speak Up.

DP: As for the college excuse, no ones going to give you an sympathy. I was taking 6 classes a semester, 2 Part Time Jobs, Executive positions in a Fraternity, Vice President of the Greek System itself, and then 2 other clubs as well as having to attend 13 funerals in the last 2 years and still managed to make a bunch of tournaments and not make as big whinefest as you are and I'm not asking for sympathy from anyone. Ya, some people have a life outside of this game, but we know how to manage those two lives as well as manage the time to get to play a game thats fun and still be able to DO Work.

John S and the GA Marathon people- I personally don't think having a GA Marathon in New England would be a terrible idea. Most of the families, wouldn't sacrifice that week for Pokemon. Plus you guys have the benefits of not having snow, or as much as we do and that's just not fun to drive in at all for even a 20 minute drive for a Cities. It would be fun, but more a mental exhaustion test for most of the participants. It's also having the furthest Venues are less than 4 hours away from each other at both ends, so financially and economically it seems as though it would be easier to spend $20-$60 a weekend on gas instead of having to get a hotel/motel/holidayyyyyyy innnn (i had to) each night n then having to get gas.... if that's what y'all do down there, again I'm not 100% sure on how it's done. Do you like plan out where people stay each night like at other people's houses each night and stuff? I'm kinda intrigued by how the marathon works.

Yeah, Snow's a bummer. The majority of the people doing the marathon carpool and roompool.

A lot of us stay at the same hotels, so it's basically just a big PARTY. I know as of right now 7 people in my SUV for the marathon. It's amazing what happens when you divide gas/room costs it's so much cheaper.

I know for my group at least, it's not as much about the tournaments and points as much as it is about football in the fields between rounds(kinda a tradition at this point), long car rides playing Mario Kart DS(Prolly dissidia this year lol), or just staying up late building new decks between tournaments.

The Georgia marathon has sort of a Nationals feel to it, I would be personally devastated if anyhting were done and it was eliminated.

Last year I drove up with Omar, and two roommates from Tallahassee (they barely play, but I dragged them along anyhow). Splitting the rooms 4 ways is a lot better, and our last night was in Athens on New Year's at a friend's house.

At least with the FL crew, we often times stayed at the same hotel, and would see each other around, give travel advice, etc. The marathon is amazing. I had an absolute blast.

Tymon, Greg and Gary put on a unique and fun collection of events we always look forward to attending. It's during Christmas break and a chance for a lot of old friends from different parts of the country to catch up and play some Pokemon.

Yeah, let's eliminate something like that

Well if everyone feels that strongly about eliminating the collection of events well make sure to do it again this year :thumb: Gary, Greg, Craig, and I have already talked about dates but we are waiting to get the CC info from PUI before we lock it all down.

Yes, that's so reasonable considering I'm a full time college student. Yes, that's so reasonable expecting a full time college student to not only keep up good grades, but have a job AND have time for a GAME. Yes, that's so reasonable considering I live no where near an area that does this.

I'm not the only one who things that the GA marathon is a joke and that it shouldn't be allowed. :/

Some of us actually DO have lives out side pokemon...

It might be a joke to some, but instead of running events over 7 weekend GA trys to give players in the area and local states a fun 10 day event. It might not be Naitonals or Worlds, but it is still fun to play and hang out with Friends. Isn't that what Pokemon is about. True it helps some with their ratings, but you also have to look at it this way, that if a player has a couple bad days at the tournaments it could hurt their ratings also. At the end of the day, it should be about just having fun. It the GA marathon gives players something fun to do over the holiday break even if they can only make it to one or two events.

You're still trying to find a location? You were handed one. Glen Burnie, remember? But the league has to be in your backyard if you're going to do it, huh? :/

@SC: Again though, even if you have one PTO that doesnt hold as many events, it doesnt stop anyone from becoming a TO, run some tourneys around the league they run and then ask for a BR or a CC! I'd always go through the local PTO though and ask them 1st if it is OK to run a BR or CC.

Keith

DarthPika,

This is great advice from Keith. When I started running OP in Georgia over 4 years ago there was not as many tournaments as there are now in the area. I started to have Gary, Craig, and Greg help out at my events and judge for me. They also started up leagues in their own areas, and over time they gathered experience along the way on running events and doing OP. This made it easy for me to go to PUI and ask that they start to run Battle Road and City Championship events on their own even though they are TOs. This then opened up the ability for more events to be run on the same weekends like we are with the Battle Roads since we all can't be everywhere at once, and they love doing it. They are wonderful guys and I am glad to have them as friends. It is because of their past dedication and hard work that makes the GA marathon possible. Just like Keith's, my advice is apply to be a TO, run a league, run small tournaments at your league, and gain experience. It takes time, but in a couple of years you could ask one of your local PTOs to back you up to run a BR or CC in your area with the experience to back up that request.

Think about it,

Why did this topic go from being about finding out invite structure to discussing the GA Marathon?

...because it turned into 'baaawwwwhh'ing about how 'unfair' it was that those players would have an alleged 'advantage' when it came to ratings points.

Alleged 'advantage?'

It IS an advantage. There is no "alleged" about it.

That being said. I think discussion about GA Marathon/other topics does have great pertinence to ratings/invite structure. I just wish they'd announce SOMETHING by now.

Well, it's Friday in most of the US now...How 'bout POP kindly announce what we're competing for by morning?

Still got to win the big events though ;)

And DarthPika, please shut up. Thank you.
