items of note:
The Pokémon TCG Last Chance Qualifier is the final World Championships qualifier open to all eligible players in good standing. It is run using the Age-Modified Single Elimination format.
The tournament is run using the Modified Format and Single Elimination pairings. Each Single Elimination match will be a best‐of‐three format, with the first player to win 2 games winning the match. Winning players advance to the next round; losing players are eliminated from the event. See the Pokémon Tournament Rules for additional information about the Modified and Single Elimination formats. The number of rounds run will depend on total attendance at the event. After the appropriate number of rounds has taken place, the final 8 players in each age division will move on to play in the Pokémon TCG World Championships on Saturday, August 13th.
New Player ID’s will not be given at this event.

Are you freaking kidding me? This is retarded. Seriously, this is the worst decision ever. Why would ANYBODY travel to play in the stupid grinder if it's single elimination? What sane person would do that? This is simply STUPID. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID.

EDIT: Read my better, more worth reading post below. This was more made out of primal rage than anything, not having the best day today :D

It's basically been Single Elimination anyway, don't you think?

This just makes it official and, from the view point of staff, much easier to manage!

This is awesome!

Now you actually have to play to top 8 the grinder and you make it in. Seems like it makes "earning" an invite after missing out MORE legitimate.

In previous years you could grind in with one loss. IIRC ness did it last year after lossing to yomata.

Single elimination will mean less to keep track of for the judges - able to put more and more focus on games as the rounds pass.

Still waiting for VGC info...

Guess the LCQ becomes King of the Hill. This will be interesting time wise. If you knock out your oppt quickly, you might have to wait around for a hour or so till all other matches are dont before you can play your next round. It will be interesting format for this event, but I guess if you have to prove you should be at Worlds by beating all other players.

I gotta disagree. It's not like the grinder/real tournament is the only thing to do at worlds, nor is worlds the only thing to do in San Diego : )

My last post was really made of of shear rage after a string of undesirable stuff going on today, kinda compounded by things like this.

I'm still disappointed, though. I personally just don't see the point of playing the grinder anymore. Per my understanding of previous years, many hundreds of players played in the grinder, any many people traveled specifically to play in the grinder. Now half those people will be disappointed after only and hour. I'd even be willing to be that many Worlds-level players will get eliminated early due to unfortunate matchups, something that inevitably happens in this game. The point of Swiss rounds is that 1) players can play and have fun all day and 2) players can afford and loss or 2 due to bad luck. Best of 3 gets rid of some of the luck, but matchups are still a major factor when it comes to luck.

I'm not a big fan of this decision. The premise of pokemon is to have fun, and the first rule is spirit of the game.
I feel as though swiss is the best system in the game because even if you don't qualify, you can play however
many rounds they hold, and say 'Hey, I got a winning record!' You get to learn from your wins and losses and
tough matchups, even if you are playing in the 2-5 tables at the end. Where is the learning in half the field being
eliminated in the first round?

I'm only going to be happy with this decision if they have some well timed and worth while side events the day
of the grinder. (Which I'm sure they will.) But I'm still dissappointed. The concept of Swiss and 'everybody gets
to play all day no matter what' is one of the things I brag about most when I talk about pokemon. And it's a big
dissappointment to me that what I believe to be one of the three most important tournaments of the year is
not holding up that value that I'm so proud of.

*Is more motivated to get an invite before the trip to San Diego*

last year it was basically double elimination. Where if you lost 2 games you were out. best of 3 this is arguably a better option. And will probably make the tournament go faster

Good Move imo

And @ alex2k
2 donks in the grinder would knock you out normally anyway.

2 donks could have knocked anyone out of the grinders any other year. Now you could lose up to 7 times and still make it. (Just don't lose 2 in a row)

The Grinder is not a normal Pokemon event.
It's not an event unto itself, where the tournament is the focus and playing all day for fun is the point.

No, the Grinder serves one and only one purpose: To give a last chance for a few players to earn the last invites into the World Championship. Unlike all other Pokemon tournaments, playing it out for fun is not the point.

The Grinder is a tremendous strain on the staff. Making a change that reduces that strain is a good thing. It will keep the staff fresher for Worlds, which is the point of the whole weekend.
