Well, he obviously did possess an advantage -- he can play in whatever tournament he wants and playtest all he wants, while the majority of professors are judging/organizing/etc. His win can't really be considered legitimate, as the people he played against haven't (in theory) had as many opportunities to spend time playing competitively quite as much as he and us other players do.
You can play test all you want. Especially this year are you serious? We didn't know the format until a month before Nationals. I mean you can play games whenever you want. He won his games in legitimate fashion. He didn't enter correctly, but he played fairly.
