“Dirty Decks Done Dirt Cheap” –afstandopleren Wins! Cyrus 2nd Check Out Their Decks

RE the new post: great modifications to the deck, Wayne! Just for fun, I tested the matchup out some...And it is close (especially now that I don't have Drifloons to donk)! If I see you at any Battle Roads, we should play our decks against each other in person.
Yeah, it's a great deck if you manage to roll heads occasionally. :) It was tails all the way in the second and third games. Darn 6-sided translucent dice with rounded corners.

Wow, look at that pod four strength, folks! To think that we'd both finish first and second...

I had my eyes on the $25 prize, but alas - I came up just short. Oh well...At least I have some default swag to work with for HeyTrainer's third Apprentice tournament! :thumb:

Great contest - I'm eagerly looking forward to the next.

P.S. I'm also curious about Houndoom G's relevance in the top four match. CB's deck was the primary motivator behind me throwing it in, because that match would be an autoloss otherwise.

Match Report Ragingphantom's Infernape

Infernape vs Beautifly

Game 1:

I felt pretty good about this matchup going in and the first game went pretty well. If the Infernape deck gets setup, it can do damage much faster than Beautifly, and that's what happened. I start with a Chimchar, him with Treecko and Unown R and I attach and hit his Treecko. He Great Balls a Wurmple, retreats, and puts up Unown R to gain some time. I attach and KO Unown R with Chimchar. He evolves to Silicoon, uses Ascension and goes to Beautifly. I go to Monferno with 3 energies and Fury Swipe him for .... Nothing!. He Colorful Scales me for some damage and poison and burn. I evolve to Infernape MD, attach and Mega Bravo him for 120. The rest of the game is me playing 2 SSUs and getting heads both times allowing me to Scoop Up an energyless Infernape MD, put it on the newly active Monferno, and Mega Bravoing until he has nothing left. 1-0

Game 2:

Started with Vulpix, used Call to get 2 Chimchars. Never got energy, never drew into anything useful. 10 minutes in, we had 7 minutes to go in the match, I was 2 prizes down with a Vulpix and not much else out against 3 Beautiflys, so I scooped to have a shot at the final game. 1-1

Game 3:

Start with Bronzong and Vulpix. He has Wurmple, Treecko and Unown R. His deck gets set up fast and he gets a Beautifly with an energy soon. I get a Ninetales with 2 energies. Time is called with no prizes taken. First prize card wins. I attach and Fire Blast him for 60. He has a potion so he is now at 40. He attaches and I take some damage and status effects with Beautifly's attack. I can hit him for 60 again, but that's all I can do and after the next attack, Ninetales gets KO'd between turns. I could have put up Bronzong G, but with no way to attack as there is no metal energy in the deck, I would have had to top deck a Switch. 1-2

Overall, my deck suffered from a commonality of many of the decks in this event. It had nearly zero draw power, so you had to rely on luck and top decking to get setup. I would have liked to see some Pokedexes, a couple of Amulet coins, Unown Rs, Volkners, or maybe some other creative ways of drawing cards.

In contrast, Beautifly set up, well.... beautifully. It had a number of Pokemon Rescues and NM, 4 Unown Rs, as well as good supporter draw which allowed the player to actually go through nearly the entire deck during the game.

Props:
A well organized event, really series of events, with great prize support
Playing against a really well built cheap deck and watching it go on to win the event
Watching the final epic battle between Beautifly and the SP deck

Slops:
Energy drought in Game 2 which made it a loss, but the best deck won anyway.

Looking forward to the next challenge!

Well, at least now I feel better about my showing =P

Great contest, WWNN, and looking forward to the next one. Maybe I'll enter myself again and see if I can redeem myself =]

John, I am sorry I let you down. Lissanne left, and I JUMPED at the chance to help my good buddy win. I am positive that if it wasn't for me that your deck would of lost R1 against what I played. Here is my report for you -

T8 - Octillery (Waynegg)

G1 - I get an eh start, and I really don't know what the deck should be doing for the first game. I try to figure out what I should be doing and then once I do, I am too far behind and scoop G1 to my opponents Octillery Swarm.

G2 -I start with Krow G and start spreading, I end up using Krow G and Bat G to 2 shot Octillery. A few whiffs in a row on Conflips helped here.

G3- I get a good start with Krow, but two T2 Octillery give me troubles. Luckily for me the deck isn't thinned out enough for my oppoenent to get enough energy to do damage. I have severe issues and get lucky and end up using Krow and Bat to take game 3 and the match.

T4 - Turtwig/Weavile (CharizardBoy)

G1 - I use Krow and Bat to KO his Weavile and then use Houndoom G to KO my opponents Turtwig.

G2 - Same as G1 exactly/

T2 - Beautifly/Sceptile (Afstandopleren)

G1 PART 1 - I get a GREAT start and I get out the HQ and Skunktank and start using Hochkrow for spreading. I am up by about 2 or 3 prizes, when my opponent finally takes a prize and oops, he forgot to set the out, so we have to RESTART game 1, which I wasn't too happy at consider I was winning the game.

G1 PART 2 - So long story short, I get an awful start and get trounched in G1 PART 2. I am not too happy and now have to win 2 in a row just to win.

G2 - I decide to go 2nd. My hand is the following - Crobat G, Crobat G, Dark, Energy Gain, PlusPower, Pokeball, and a useless card. I draw into Skunktank. I use Pokeball flip heads, and proceed to donk his active Unown R on T1 to win G2.

G3 - This game was intense. I get a sizable lead because I managed to grab all 4 Turn early game, and was using them to recycle the same Krow after Beatifly hit me for 60. I am able to get a 2 prize lead by doing this, however I was failing to draw into energy and supporters which gave me fits. I am able to get down to 2-4 on prizes and I know that I have my opponent, but then he uses Volkner and pulls a life herb. I have his 2nd Beatifly up to 80. I had been using Posion Structure to make the damage work. He rolls and flips heads, however I argue that it wasn't a real roll based on the fact it was more of a drop. My oppoent rerolls.....heads. I know that I am in SERIOUS trouble now. I work to try to get my opponent back up to the right amount of damage, however he is taking prizes too quickly as he now has the Sceptile up. I see that he only has a few cards left in his deck. I know that I can deck him with some flips. I have a Switch in my hand incase I stay asleep. However in the last 3 turns of the game. I whiff on Burn 3 straight times equaling 3 prizes. I whiff on a SSU as well. If I hit the SSU or a Burn flip, I would of 100% decked him. As he would of been forced to retreat the Beatifly as I would of KO'd it if he hadn't and I would of been able to KO it based on my next card (Underground Expedition), however this never came to be as I manage to go 0/4 on the flips when I really need them. I was a little dissappointed as I knew I had G1 as well, but oh well, atleast I got 2nd and helped my friend.

On a side note, John, when you read this, I donated the Ho-Oh/Lugia deck box to you as an added prize for you. I don't need it and I am sure you will enjoy it more than I will and you can consider it an I am sorry for not winning the whole thing prize. :thumb:

Drew

Well we did it. We finished a contest on the PokeGym. From my experience, that was a long shot.

Some of the final battles were, if not epic, epicish. All of the top-cut decks showed promise. The marority or the matches went to game three.

Drew, don't feel sorry! I was very lucky to have as good a player as you substitute at the last second for this.

Besides, based on what you just told me in the report...I know how it would've gone if it were an actual premier event.

Congrats are in order for afstand, though - you embody all that is rogue. : D

Thank you, Cyrus, for your comments earlier :]

I'm so happy I got 3rd place, and am curious to see how my matches went. I didn't think I could win against T-Tar XD

Thanks for everything, guys, and congratulations to all the winners :]

Mind = Blown. I couldn't believe it when I read WWNN's post. XD

Congrats on everyone in the T8 for have awesome decks that got very far and big props again to Chip for taking my deck to it's limits!

And serious :thumb:s up to Cyrus for his awesome Honch Snipe deck, I was already hoping for our decks to meet and face off but didn't expect it to turn out like this! And thank you, Rogue FTW!

I am positive that if it wasn't for me that your deck would of lost R1 against what I played.

Thanks for that! :thumb:

Congrats to all! this was a very fun contest. Thanks especially to WWNN and P_A, you guys are awesome. Please let me know the next time you have this contest in case i miss it, because i definitely want in!

Here is something that I'm interested in finding out. Afstandopleren, who are you going to choose for the gift certificate? Will it be a Gym Seller or will it be a commercial internet vendor. So whats it going to be?

I never buy stuff online so I would honestly not know where to even begin with looking. But I think I'll go spend it on a Gym Seller.

Match report for Afstandopleren's Beautifly deck

Preliminary notes: I know Beautifly! The first deck I ever put together was a Beautifly/Drapion deck, so I know how it plays. But I'm not sure about all the Life Herbs and Potions - won't they be a waste of space? And the thin 1-1-1 line of Sceptile will make it tough to get that set up. I play a few practice games, and win most of them, including against Waynegg's Octillery deck. I have plenty of draw power (almost too much - I succeed in decking myself once).

Round 1, vs. RagingPhantom's Infernape deck

Of the three decks I might have faced in R1, this is the deck I have the best chance against. Thank goodness Beautifly isn't weak to fire. Unfortunately, Infernape doesn't have any Resistance, so I can't do 60 for 1 against him. I'll have to rely on speed and poison. I give myself about a 1 in 3 chance of winning.

Game 1: Poor start. I don't see a Silcoon for the first three turns, and no way to get one. I get three Poke Balls, and roll tails on all three. Oh, I wish I had a Bebe's! I keep playing gamely, but there's no way to recover, as he's one-shotting my Beautiflys with Infernape. 0-1, and I'm confident I'll be going home soon.

Game 2: WWNN walks by and casually mentions, "25 minutes left." For the whole rest of the match! I thought this was the normal 40 minutes per game format. (I've never been in top cut before, so what do I know?) Uh oh, better hurry this next game. Sceptile is prized, but I get 2 Beautifly up quickly, and he can't get enough energy to do much damage, so he scoops with only a couple of prizes left, to leave enough time for the deciding game. 1-1

Game 3: This time, Grovyle is prized. (Yes, that 1-1-1 line is too thin! 2-2-1 next time, please, Afstandopleren.) We both get set up, but time is called before any prizes are taken. Next prize will win the match. I got a single Beautifly up, and he couldn't get an Infernape out, so I manage to get Ninetales poisoned and knocked out for the win. Wow, I actually won! That was unexpected. Wonder who I meet next?

Round 2, vs. Burmy's Beedrill deck

No wait, he switched to Gyarados? Yay, it has resistance! But at 130 HP, that's three hits for KO - not easy. Hopefully, I can get Sceptile set up this time.

Game 1: OK start, but not enough pokemon on my bench; could be trouble. Still no Sceptile! Knocking out Gyarados is indeed a slow process, especially as Blissey keeps healing it. We trade prizes for half the game, but then I manage to get 4 energy cards on a Beautifly and wipe out Dana's remaining two pokemon for the win. 1-0

(BTW, I'm starting to appreciate the healing powers of this deck. Against an opponent who can do 60 damage per turn, a single Potion can change a 2HKO of Beautifly into 3HKO. Big difference.)

Game 2: A great start, and managed to get Sceptile set up at last. A quick win, and I'm in the finals!

Round 3, vs. Cyrus's Honchkrow G deck

Game 1: Off to an OK start, and search my deck to find my Sceptile line intact - good news. But about three turns in, we finally notice that I forgot to put out my prizes! My head was in such a whirl by being in the finals so unexpectedly... Normally, I would be given a game loss for such a mistake, but since this tournament is about the decks and not the players, the rule is that we restart. But I feel bad for Cyrus, because he was getting set up really well, and probably would have gone on to win the game. After the restart, he gets set up poorly, and I manage to do enough damage early get a sizable lead. He scoops, 1-0

Game 2 is quick: Turn 1, Drew gets a heads flip on a Poke Ball, pulls a Honchkrow, and sets it up with a PlusPower to donk my lone Unown R. At least we'll have plenty of time for the final game. 1-1

Game 3: This is a truly epic game, as befits the deciding game of the tournament. He keeps sniping my Wurmples and Treecko (oh no, no Sceptile again!) for easy prizes, but I manage to get two Beautiflys set up with an energy apiece and keep smashing his Honchkrows to force him to use up his Poketurns and SSUs. With two Beautiflys, I can keep retreating them to wipe off the poison that Skuntank G is giving me each turn. Now, I truly appreciate all the Life Herbs and Potions this deck has - the look on Drew's face when I wiped all the damage from my active Beautifly with two Potions was priceless. I OHKO two of his Chatots, but I'm still down 4 prizes to 2 when I decide I really, really need Sceptile. So I rescue my Treecko from the discard pile and hope against hope that he doesn't snipe it again before I get Grovyle on it. He chooses to finish off my next-to-last Beautifly instead, so I manage to evolve to Sceptile and can at last start hitting with Beautifly's full power (60+B+P+A). But I still need to have luck on my side, because I'm out of healing and running short of deck (only about 10 cards left). I get another prize, but now Beautifly's up to 80 damage. I need a Life Herb! But all I have is a Volkner's and a handful of useless cards. So let's see... I waste a Great Ball, and see that I have no more Pokemon in my deck, but a single Life Herb. I need to get that out. I waste my remaining useless Poke Balls and Great Balls to get down to four cards, then drop my Volkner's to draw three. One, two... the third card was the Life Herb. Hooray! Now I just need to roll heads. Roll...heads. But wait, Drew objects that the die didn't roll enough for a valid flip. (True enough.) WWNN calls for a re-roll, and I get another heads. It's fate! It's destiny! Now Beautifly is down to 20 damage, and fully powered up. Two more Colorful Powders, Drew rolls tails on Burn for each one, two more KOs. One prize left, but now Beautifly is poisoned and not long for the world, and I'm down to 2 cards in my deck. Sceptile won't be able to get a KO before I'm decked, so I have to attack once more with Beautifly and hope for just one more bit of luck. 60 damage on Houndoom G, 70 with Poison, and... Drew rolls a final tails for Burn, and I win the game. Wow!

I still find it hard to believe that I ended up the winner. There were several factors which helped: Afstandopleren's excellent deck (better than I initially thought it was), not having to meet the two decks I most feared (T-tar and Turtwig GL), and an overflowing potful of luck in the final game (especially Drew rolling tails for burn three times in a row for the final three prizes).

Congratulations to all the deck builders and players. All the decks in the top cut were very good, but there is still room for improvement, and there are still plenty of deck possibilities to be explored. Can't wait for the next tournament!

Match Report for Waynegg's Octillery Deck

Well, Drew gave a good summary of our match, but I'll add a few comments:

G1-As Drew already said, he didn't really know his deck very well as he was a sub. I set up quickly, had good luck, won, and gloated a lot over beating Drew.

G2-Well, now Drew knew the deck. Honchkrow plagued me all the way. I rolled a lot of tails. I was a dead octopus.

G3-See G2.

This was an extremely fun deck to play, and it was indeed very easy to set up. But it suffered from one big problem: I repeatedly found myself with 6 or 8 or more energy cards in my hand and no good way to get them back in the deck. Putting one back with Bebe's or Prof. Oak wasn't enough. I was wishing for anything that would shuffle my entire hand back into my deck--Professor Rowan, Looker's Investigation, Cynthia's Feelings, Chatot, etc.

I'm definitely going to make my own Octillery cheap deck. It's just too much fun not to have one.

Thanks for the great deck, Waynegg!

The most effective ways to put them back in the deck were just too expensive... I though about Cynthia's and others for that reason but in play testing it, when I drew after shuffling my hand in my deck I drew essentially the same hand again every time just about, lol!

You have my real deck list. I think you will find it holds all the answers to that problem, though you may want to take out a 1-1 Claydol or 2 Waters in favor of a 1-1 Staraptor FB Lv. X :)

I think Squidwina is right. A 1 dollar lookers lets you "draw up to 5" so that nrg will stay in the deck. My cheap octillary played Rowen to keep a critical card in hand while dumping nrg back.

^^You could have only drawn one card with Cynthia's/Looker's.

It would be awesome if you did this again, WWNN! Maybe you could film the top cut matches, so we could see how things actually played out.

I know all your secrets. :thumb: Yes, your "real" build would solve the problem. I didn't want to refresh my hand to get better cards as much as I wanted to reduce my hand size and increase the energy/not-energy ratio of the deck.

And I don't think I could get any Claydols or Lv.X's into a cheap deck! (You must have missed the "cheap" part of what I said...) I was thinking a cheap version would make a great "loaner" deck for kids at league. You know they'd have fun with Water Vein.

So what do you all think, should we do this again? I would love to hear recomendations for making it bigger and better if we do it again.
Oh, yes, we should do it again! I think "bigger" will happen automatically.

My suggestion, which I mentioned to you yesterday, is that you announce the contest one or two weeks before you start taking deck list submissions to allow people some more time to think about their lists.

And as you well know, the price list needs to be tweaked a bit, especially for the trainers. (Bebe's is 50 cents while Mom's Kindness is a buck and a half? That's just silly!) With more lead time, we can easily do that.

Speaking of which--you asked people not to question the price list....and they didn't. I'm impressed!
