Match report for Afstandopleren's Beautifly deck
Preliminary notes: I know Beautifly! The first deck I ever put together was a Beautifly/Drapion deck, so I know how it plays. But I'm not sure about all the Life Herbs and Potions - won't they be a waste of space? And the thin 1-1-1 line of Sceptile will make it tough to get that set up. I play a few practice games, and win most of them, including against Waynegg's Octillery deck. I have plenty of draw power (almost too much - I succeed in decking myself once).
Round 1, vs. RagingPhantom's Infernape deck
Of the three decks I might have faced in R1, this is the deck I have the best chance against. Thank goodness Beautifly isn't weak to fire. Unfortunately, Infernape doesn't have any Resistance, so I can't do 60 for 1 against him. I'll have to rely on speed and poison. I give myself about a 1 in 3 chance of winning.
Game 1: Poor start. I don't see a Silcoon for the first three turns, and no way to get one. I get three Poke Balls, and roll tails on all three. Oh, I wish I had a Bebe's! I keep playing gamely, but there's no way to recover, as he's one-shotting my Beautiflys with Infernape. 0-1, and I'm confident I'll be going home soon.
Game 2: WWNN walks by and casually mentions, "25 minutes left." For the whole rest of the match! I thought this was the normal 40 minutes per game format. (I've never been in top cut before, so what do I know?) Uh oh, better hurry this next game. Sceptile is prized, but I get 2 Beautifly up quickly, and he can't get enough energy to do much damage, so he scoops with only a couple of prizes left, to leave enough time for the deciding game. 1-1
Game 3: This time, Grovyle is prized. (Yes, that 1-1-1 line is too thin! 2-2-1 next time, please, Afstandopleren.) We both get set up, but time is called before any prizes are taken. Next prize will win the match. I got a single Beautifly up, and he couldn't get an Infernape out, so I manage to get Ninetales poisoned and knocked out for the win. Wow, I actually won! That was unexpected. Wonder who I meet next?
Round 2, vs. Burmy's Beedrill deck
No wait, he switched to Gyarados? Yay, it has resistance! But at 130 HP, that's three hits for KO - not easy. Hopefully, I can get Sceptile set up this time.
Game 1: OK start, but not enough pokemon on my bench; could be trouble. Still no Sceptile! Knocking out Gyarados is indeed a slow process, especially as Blissey keeps healing it. We trade prizes for half the game, but then I manage to get 4 energy cards on a Beautifly and wipe out Dana's remaining two pokemon for the win. 1-0
(BTW, I'm starting to appreciate the healing powers of this deck. Against an opponent who can do 60 damage per turn, a single Potion can change a 2HKO of Beautifly into 3HKO. Big difference.)
Game 2: A great start, and managed to get Sceptile set up at last. A quick win, and I'm in the finals!
Round 3, vs. Cyrus's Honchkrow G deck
Game 1: Off to an OK start, and search my deck to find my Sceptile line intact - good news. But about three turns in, we finally notice that I forgot to put out my prizes! My head was in such a whirl by being in the finals so unexpectedly... Normally, I would be given a game loss for such a mistake, but since this tournament is about the decks and not the players, the rule is that we restart. But I feel bad for Cyrus, because he was getting set up really well, and probably would have gone on to win the game. After the restart, he gets set up poorly, and I manage to do enough damage early get a sizable lead. He scoops, 1-0
Game 2 is quick: Turn 1, Drew gets a heads flip on a Poke Ball, pulls a Honchkrow, and sets it up with a PlusPower to donk my lone Unown R. At least we'll have plenty of time for the final game. 1-1
Game 3: This is a truly epic game, as befits the deciding game of the tournament. He keeps sniping my Wurmples and Treecko (oh no, no Sceptile again!) for easy prizes, but I manage to get two Beautiflys set up with an energy apiece and keep smashing his Honchkrows to force him to use up his Poketurns and SSUs. With two Beautiflys, I can keep retreating them to wipe off the poison that Skuntank G is giving me each turn. Now, I truly appreciate all the Life Herbs and Potions this deck has - the look on Drew's face when I wiped all the damage from my active Beautifly with two Potions was priceless. I OHKO two of his Chatots, but I'm still down 4 prizes to 2 when I decide I really, really need Sceptile. So I rescue my Treecko from the discard pile and hope against hope that he doesn't snipe it again before I get Grovyle on it. He chooses to finish off my next-to-last Beautifly instead, so I manage to evolve to Sceptile and can at last start hitting with Beautifly's full power (60+B+P+A). But I still need to have luck on my side, because I'm out of healing and running short of deck (only about 10 cards left). I get another prize, but now Beautifly's up to 80 damage. I need a Life Herb! But all I have is a Volkner's and a handful of useless cards. So let's see... I waste a Great Ball, and see that I have no more Pokemon in my deck, but a single Life Herb. I need to get that out. I waste my remaining useless Poke Balls and Great Balls to get down to four cards, then drop my Volkner's to draw three. One, two... the third card was the Life Herb. Hooray! Now I just need to roll heads. Roll...heads. But wait, Drew objects that the die didn't roll enough for a valid flip. (True enough.) WWNN calls for a re-roll, and I get another heads. It's fate! It's destiny! Now Beautifly is down to 20 damage, and fully powered up. Two more Colorful Powders, Drew rolls tails on Burn for each one, two more KOs. One prize left, but now Beautifly is poisoned and not long for the world, and I'm down to 2 cards in my deck. Sceptile won't be able to get a KO before I'm decked, so I have to attack once more with Beautifly and hope for just one more bit of luck. 60 damage on Houndoom G, 70 with Poison, and... Drew rolls a final tails for Burn, and I win the game. Wow!
I still find it hard to believe that I ended up the winner. There were several factors which helped: Afstandopleren's excellent deck (better than I initially thought it was), not having to meet the two decks I most feared (T-tar and Turtwig GL), and an overflowing potful of luck in the final game (especially Drew rolling tails for burn three times in a row for the final three prizes).
Congratulations to all the deck builders and players. All the decks in the top cut were very good, but there is still room for improvement, and there are still plenty of deck possibilities to be explored. Can't wait for the next tournament!
