Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

2009-2010 modified format announced

This is good but lame at the same time. Obviously we needed Unown G because cetain cards would be broken without it but they could of either reprinted it or made a new cards with smilar effects .... I.e a card like manectric that blocks effects while on the bench instead of damage.

It would of been interesting to see how it would of been MD-on without Claydol. But this decision is still great.

Awesome, when I first read the title, I was like, oh gawd, what are they gonna cut, now I feel like jumping up and down. Yays

Sadly I will not be playing this year as I have quit. I don't care though. The game really lost it's fun with Kingdra and all.

Now, the new expansions are so well thought out. The card designers actually sit down and analyze the current metagame, create dream decks with dream Pokémon that are dream counters to the current top decks, and put them in the next set. A clear R & D improvement!

I'm hoping that they will maintain synchronization with the Japanese format, for precisely that reason -- they balance the new sets against the Japanese format and metagame, and the closer we can stick to that, the better off we'll be. [Insert horror story you cited about Scramble + Gallade - Banette ex here.]

But I imagine they will break after next season. I'll be somewhat disappointed if they do.

Wow Thats so stupid that theres no rotation!!! 3 seasons in a row with claydol pretty much a staple in every deck does anyone else agree with me or am I the only one???

Claydol is an amazing card and great for the game. Without Claydol and Unown G in the game, Gengar/Machamp would beat anything and everything consistently.

I am not personally surprised to hear the reasoning behind this. It is nice to have the same format worldwide.

Fun fact about this:

This rotation will make Diamond and Pearl the set that has been playable for the most World Championships ever, at 4 (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010).

Would somebody mind explaining to me why some folks think it's better to have one BDIF instead of several viable options?

The sheer number of cards that are available (and will be available when the next Worlds rolls around) is incredible.
Yeah, I think they're in cahoots with the guys who make binder pages and boxes and stuff.

this is interesting news to say the least. though i was hoping to see wat people would do wen they could no longer use claydol and unknown g plus i wanted to see wat the amu users would do once half there deck was out of comission... i guess the world will never know :(

Im soooooo happy!!!!! there are all kinds of options now...T-TERRA LIVES!!!!!! Many thanks 2 whoever made this happen....The format is going 2 be all kinds of crazy!!!! However i do want machamp gone....

Because *in theory* if there is one BDIF thenthere are a lot of mirror matches, which come down to playing skill, deckbuilding skill, and choosing the right techs. Given equal luck, the people who are best at those thing should win.

If there are a lot of decks that are about the same level, then whether you win or not can depend a lot on match ups. Say you have a deck that has a great match up against almost everything in the format, but has a near autoloss against Kingdra (<-- random example), and you happen to be paired up against 3 Kingdra decks at a tourney, you probably won't top cut.

Having a BDIF is good for showing who the best players are, but for everyone else, it makes the game a bit boring and repetitive. That's why some people want a BDIF and some don't.

I prefer having a few BDIF's. Like Flygon Ex/Metanite/Bandoom/Flariados vs the rest, stuff like that.

Not to rain on your parade, but this has been in the works since the middle of the 2006-2007 season. We couldn't do it this year, because we wanted to get the EX Series out of the format before upping the number of sets in the format. We knew that the 2008-2009 season would be DP-on, and knew that this was the perfect opportunity to execute our plan.

So, technically, this has been in the works for 2 years. You guys are just slow to catch on.

Imagine that... POP planning ahead...

. . . I love you, Mike Liesik
