Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

2009 Masters World Champion Report!

Steve,

Did you get abducted by aliens?

No 'ego has landed gonna rip ya head off type comments?' - Just kidding mate!

As pop mentioned earlier, it is really nice to see you have grown up to understand the responsibilities that come with being World Champ, I was discussing this with your dad last night an you are a credit to him, let them pick holes in your religion, deck, words, thoughts or whatever! Sometimes saying nothing says more.

We have spoken on the phone but I will congratulate you publicly again or people will think I was just supporting Sami, again I discussed this with your dad last night but hitting F5 was horrid, I was hoping for the building to be evacuated again and a draw called lol.

Well done again and enjoy the fame n fortune

Grats Steve :)

Just a joking side note: Believing in Jesus wins you worlds. Not believing in Jesus wins you worlds TWICE ( Jason :p )

I'm proudly atheist and would argue with Steve back and forth over the issue in a friendly matter if it was really relevant, but really, is it necessary to call him out about it in a tournament report? Its one line in a series of Props. He has his faith and abides by it. It was noticible when you first read the report, but it was STILL tasteful ( Likely more so than my opening joke ) and personally, as one of the people on here who I bet is most against religion, I still see absolutely NO basis for complaints about what he said.

As for the deck: The list was really strong, and I am glad to see someone took the time to test cutting Uxie. I had thought about it for months now but never gave it a try. In a deck where bench space is SO tight it is hard to fit it. Chatot is simply better here because it works under power lock which this deck HATES.

2-3 Claydol is 100% the play here. The split ratio like that proved so good in Kingdra back in Cities that theres no way it wouldn't be sick in Beedrill.

Beedrill turned out to go from being a "risky" deck choice into being the BEST deck choice for the event. I liked Stephens list from Nats and I tested it a bit and found that if your opponent knows your deck and how to play against it, your in pretty bad shape against Palkia Dialga Luxray, and to a less extent, a Lux Ape with 3+ Power Spray. Note that I said that your opponent needs to really know the matchup, and seeing how your the only person to use the deck, no one DOES :p You said yourself the Palkia decks kept walking into your strong Luxray plays. Palkia decks dropping the Dialga support helped out quite a bit too.

Beedrill SLAUGHTERS Flygon and Machamp, two of the bigger decks on the day. LuxApe got beat down pretty badly in Masters, taking away one of your bad matchups too. Once you escaped the first few rounds of the tournament, Beedrill became a better and better play. Is Beedrill the best deck in the format? Far from it. Was it the best deck for Worlds? 100%. This just goes to show that playing a "rogue" deck isn't necessary to win Worlds, but the edge it gives you in YOU knowing how to properly play archetype matchups while MOST opponents are left unprepared is huge.

Fantastic list overall Steve, I'd love to see a 4th Bebe, not sure what I'd cut obviously. Great job on the tournament, and see you in Hawaii :)

Sami: Thanks man, what a sick weekend it turned out to be.

Mozzy: I know it musta sucked for you. But at least you were really in a 'no lose' situation.

Drew: Thanks man!

It's all good Chris, I know and respect your position on the matter.I also appreciate the fact that you have an understanding of where I was coming from and don't make a big deal about it.

I have actually never run Uxie in this deck. At nationals I had a 2-4 claydol line with 4 bts and had t2 or t1 claydol almost every game. The Chatot went in about 10 minutes before I got to the tournament hall on friday morning.

I never really considered it to be a 'risky' choice, as I knew how to run against palkia and aperay pretty well. I knew my flygon matchup was decent, but didn't test it a ton.

Thanks For all the props Chris, I would have also liked the 4th Bebe's but I'm not sure where the spot would go.

-Steve

Only possibility is what, -1 NM +1 Bebe? Especially since you have the Luxray as an extra attacker, and you can steal prizes off the bench better so if end game your burning NMs and your a bee short, your still in good shape to win. I LIKE 4 NM a lot, but it may be one of those spots where 4 is great, but 3 is CORRECT because you get more mileage out of another card. I don't think it is too relevant either way...you know, seeing how you won Worlds already and all ;)

As for the use of the word "risky", I don't use it negatively. I went with a "risky" choice. Pretty much anything short of the "best deck in format" is risky. I cut Nidoqueen and focused my deck on beating SP and mirror knowing those were the two best decks. Had the metagame been different and Gengar/Kingdra/Beedrill been huge, I'd have done horrible. I'd rather have a deck with 5 75-25 matchups and 2 20-80s than one with 7 50-50s ( the non-"risky" choice ) because you have to go so deep in the tournament and need luck regardless, any auto wins you can steal ( aka Flygon for you :p ) are great.

Fyi, they BETTER go with RayBees.

Your totally correct Chris, his 3 bebe's tilts me too. Not positive ( as he tweaked that thing SO much) but I think it went for a 3rd bts. But ask the champ to be sure. My copy of his deck has the 4 bebe's.Can't lose a NM- must play 4 in this list.

Chris, through everything we have been through I have ALWAYS said you are not only one of the best in the world but also one of the smartest players I have ever met. Props for that!

And I sure have lost a lot of games to decks you and Eric have created lol

Also, IMHO the mimic guy won worlds for Steve. HUGE against palkia lockdown or the bad opening hands this deck will give you from time to time.

I agree Chris, RayBees is a great name for this thing!

Congrats to you! Though I have to say as we were all watching you about to take your last prize, I was watching your Dad. The complete joy he expressed, still brings me chills. As a parent there is nothing better than seeing your kid do something great! Way to go to all of you!

See. This is why I know I'm getting Old.

I would've NEVER EVER EVER thought Beedrill was the play at Worlds with all of the talk of LUXAPE going around.

YOU DA MAN!

YOU ARE >>> DA >>> MAN!!

And that report is HOTTNESS!

Thanks for taking the time to do that.

Great Job Steve! Well earned. The deck has evolved a lot since you played it at nationals. Congrats on the spectacular accomplishment you achieved. Good luck in Hawaii and see you around :)

Chris

My point was that there was no need to bring stupid, pointless, trashy comments into this thread. If he doesn't believe Steve deserves the title, well he's entitled to his opinion but I'm sure that there's an overwhelming percentage of people who would disagree. I just believe that the trash should be left elsewhere

And when the trashy comments get reported, instead of quoted, it makes our jobs so much easier.

You guys stay on the topic of Steve and his win, let us take out the trash.
