Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

2009 Modified Format announced!

Thanks so much Pokemon Organized Play for making the cards I purchased getting back in the game pretty much worthless. Thank you so much for keep booster packs on shelves that you were going to rotate out of the game. Thanks so much for profiting of a veteran returning to the game only to get slapped in the face as the two decks he constructed are now going to be out of rotation. Thanks for getting my hopes up, and actually wanting me to try to form my own League (****, it would have been an extension of my college's gaming club, and that alone would have brought in tons of new people to the game). So thanks for everything, but i'm done...

Woo Hoo the change is here and now is DP on so all the ex sets finally get swept away, No more 2 prizes per pokemon. The change will bring a whole new aspect to this game and will definitly set a standard going into 09.

Ohh and to add on: This was announced around the same time last year as it was this year

I'm feeling very cynical this morning so take that into account when you read this!!!!

It's all about marking and selling cards. If a person wants to do well at tourneys then that person HAS to buy a LOT of NEW cards to keep up.

I'm fairly competive, so are my kids. So I'm buying card for three, that does not come cheap.

The older cards were fairly afford able and now they are no longer legal. So if we wamt to be competive we have to buy the new cards.

Pokemon is BIGGGGGGG business.

The modified-legal set list shifts every year after Worlds. I know it can be frustrating, but it's been a common practice since they started doing Worlds, IIRC. Even after WotC did Worlds '02, it shifted to Neo Genesis and forward (Neo-On)

And everything is legal @ leagues. I still bust out my Insanity deck with ER/SER, Base Set Hitmonchan, Fossil Magmar, Jungle Scyther and Ditto from time to time to mess with my league kids. Although trying to figure out how Ditto works with some of these newer cards can be time-consuming >_>

In any case, time for me to build a new legal trainer base.

Rotation Summary for a Newbie

I'm a newbie PokeDad trying to follow all this to help keep my kids competitive. A few questions.

1) Aside from that list posted earlier with all the trainers and energies, is the bottom line then anything earlier than D&P rotated and you should just dump those cards?

1B) If true on #1, what about the rule if you have an older release of the same Pokemon. Can you not still play it as long as you have the Pokedex for the text from the new card? Or do people not bother with that and just get the new card, or is even that rule thrown out this time around?

2) Are the values of the EX cards going to plummet mid-late August, or have they already gone down, or do they not drop that much due to collectable value?

3) (sidebar) I see that Promo Lv.X cards sell for much less than the non-Promos. Is it because the Promos are easier to find and not as collectible, or is it because D&P Promo Cards aren't playable like World Championship reprints?

Thanks for throwing me a bone!

Hi Jazee,

1) Some cards from Diamond/Pearl were reprints of earlier cards in previous sets before Diamond/Pearl. When the format rotates, the Pokegym should have an updated list of all the cards from previous sets that are still legal to play. On this same idea, some cards still have the chance to be reprinted, thus I usually hold onto my trainers, since they are the most prone to being reprinted. Supposedly, Great Ball, Warp Energy, and Cyclone Energy have been reprinted in the newest Japanese set. So if you toss out your cards (which I would never recommend, at least donate to players that have no cards at all, to learn with), make sure to keep the Great ball, Warp and Cyclone Energy.

1B) They usually don't reprint Pokemon. But in the small chance that a new Pokemon has the same exact Name, HP, Retreat, Weakness, Resistance, same exact wording on Poke-Power/Body, and attacks, then you do not need any outside reference to play it at a premier event. The Card-Dex is a document used when players use foreign-language cards or cards that have a newer version with slightly altered text (Steven's Advice for example).

2) Some cards stay near their value, but many do go down in price. Legendary Pokemon (Legendary Birds/Dogs(Cats?)/Mew/Mewtwo/etc usually keep a little value to them. Same with cards with extreme stats like the 200HP Wailord EX or any Charizard (especially 200 DMG Charizard EX). You can tell from the various people in the Selling area of this forum selling their EXs for $5 a piece, just to get rid of them. I usually sell my non-useful high money cards a few months before the rotation, in hopes of getting a little more value out of them. But I know not everyone can do that.

3) Diamond/Pearl Promos are all playable. Only the World Championship printed cards are not playable. The reason the Lv.X promo cards sell for much less is because they are easier to find. Often time, the non-promo version of Lv.X promos take a hit too because the non-collector players just buy the promo version, reducing the value of the non-promo version. Supply/Demand pretty much.

Hoped this helps, and feel free to ask questions whenever you have them.

Thanks for the answers. Also, with the new format, it appears Rainbow Energy is now illegal so you have to use Multi Energy instead?

Didn't Multi have a downside? What about DRE's?

Obviously the new format is gonna make some minds think deeply about what decks to make.

DRE has three downsides. It can't be attached to Basics. It can't be attached to Pokemon-ex. And it reduces your attack by 10 before W/R.

The problem with DRE right now is that its biggest restriction (can't be attached to Pokemon-ex) is really not a restriction at all, as it states nothing about LvX cards.

Rainbow (old Rocket era card) would be VERY nice to have in this format. Any color Energy, 1 damage counter. Gyarados would LOVE this card, and there are a bunch of decks that become instantly playable if this card gets into the format (Eeveelutions being first and foremost).

Which set numbers are legal?

Trying to help my kids clean out their cards. I figured the best way is for them to look for all cards with old set numbers. I couldn't find a list of set numbers for all the Diamond Pearl sets. Aside from some energies/trainers/stadiums, etc. is this a correct complete list of all the set numbers that are 2008-2009 modified playable? I don't know if I missed one or accidentally added an old one:

100
106
112
123
130
132

Don't worry about the numbers. Worry about the symbols. Those are going to be far more accurate in determining which sets are legal.

Also, at every legal tournament, the Deck Registration Sheet will tell you what set is legal for that season.

The symbol if sound on the bottom-right hand of the card, If you're fairly new, you'll have to match the symbols to the sheet.

That's what I meant, next season. So Pop Series 6 is legal next season as is the Promo and Best of Game Promo cards listed at the bottom?

No. The older Black Star promos won't be legal, and definitely not the Best of Game promos.
Everything from DP to DP Black Star Promos should be, though.
