There's a bunch of factors that go involved. I'm fairly certain that PS3s come with free online play for their games. On Xbox Live, however, you'll tend to face better players in general: this has been the case in my collection of anecdotes. It also depends on what type of games you like to play? Look at their respective games' libraries before you commit.
I play almost exclusively online when I do play, want to play against better opponents, and prefer FPSes to other genres. Consequentially, a 360 is almost a no-brainer.

Chrome, the PS3 online is not as relyable and fast as the XBOX online. Besides, if price is an issue, why bother getting the PS3? You can get a $150 xbox, plus $40 ( I think) online for a year. As I recall, PS3s sell for $250 now. That's a good price difference ;P

PS3 is an all-in-one media center. Its got EVERYTHING... except netflix ;_;
Xbox, however, has a better controller (in my opinion) thus providing better gameplay. Xbox also seems to run a bit smoother on dated television (I've found).
None the less, its your call. If you want a simple game console, go for Xbox. If you wanna pay a little more to get more media options, the PS3 is your best bet. I assume, though, you already have a wii. HAHA JK

How can you accurately gauge how reliable the online play is? I've never been disconnected and haven't experienced lag on huge games like MAG. Also, I believe Xbox live is $60 a year. It jumps over the cost of the PS3. The controllers, like you said, are left to opinion.

ps3 is 300, xbox is 300. (assuming you're not getting the cheapo arcade or whatever for xbox

Be forewarned that Sony is considering making the PSN (ie, online play) pay-to-play as well. Not confirmed, but very much rumored.

it actually has netflix! :biggrin: all you got to do is order the ps3 from netflix and its FREE (assuming you are a netflix customer).
360 is good because of it has games made specially for it and those games are better than most games but ps3 first of all has a blu-ray player, free online play, awesome "M" games, and it is quiter if you want to sneak play at night. The cooler on an x-box 360 sounds like my grandpa's computer when it gets hot. Oh and btw i am talking about my great-grandpa lol. Anyways go for the ps3 man. Get the god of war $299 package

Really what it comes down to is which do all your friends have. If all your friends have 360, get that so you can play online with them. If all your friends have PS3, go with that.
I have (had, my 360 is broken) both, and I didn't really see any advantage between the two unless you really like halo, or really want a blu-ray player.
So until i get a new one its just PS3, but all my friends have 360 so they keep bugging me to get a new one to play online.

It really depends on what style you are. I think a lot of people who are more hardcore gamers will go for the 360, but I own a PS3 and I love it. The Blu Ray is also nice. I think the PS3 has some nice titles, but generally to be considered "hardcore" when it comes to gaming, you kind of need to have a 360. A lot of people have problems with it though, so if you have problems with potentially lots of calls to customer support, you'd want to go with the PS3.

Personally i have to side with the 360. This is because the 360 exclusive games are far more superior than that of the PS3. The layout of the system menu is a whole lot better to look at than the PS3 as well.
Sure, PS3 gets free online play - but you get what you pay for. I would rather have seamless online play and pay a small fee for it, then get lag and play for free.

You only listed opinions that don't help the original poster at all. I haven't ever lagged had an issue with lag and this is while being online with the largest online play on any console.

i really hate to say this but the 360 is better. a more game and variety with the more popular games on this system and more old exclusive titles are now multiplatform.
as for online play tthe 360 may have to pay for it but they actually have rules of online play and help fight against cheaters who mod or try to hack internet settings. i heard the is a huge difference in gameplay with call of duty 2 on the 360 compare to ps3 in favor of xbox
