Cheating on Camera

That's for criminal cases. Civil cases only need 'balance of probablility'. Past behaviour and the video give you that.

Not the point.

Cheaters need to know that they are hated on. One of the great things about Pokemon is that cheats are not tolerated by the players. They find they have no friends and no respect in the game and this helps to get rid of them.

I know there are some TCGs where successful but very shady players are admired right up to the moment they get banned (and sometimes afterwards). That's not how things are done in Pokemon.

Huh? While I'm all for hating on cheaters, not every community is as harsh as we'd like it to be. There are places where I've been asked not to wear my Doc's Machine "I Club (as in cards) Cheaters" shirt, due to it "offending" certain "important persons", whereas other places I've gotten dozens of "where do I buy one of those" questions. Just google Doc's Machine Paintball if you want to get one, cheating sucks.

A few interesting notes, since legality was brought up. Cheating in Pokemon can be a civil issue, because the loss of prizes for other competitors has precedent as damages in most if not all jurisdictions I know. That said, the civil court system is a mess for things like this, and it really isn't worth it.

In some states (Nevada is one, if I recall) as well as in Canada, however, it is legally considered fraud to cheat in a prized event. Up here in the great white north, it is an indictable offence if you defraud the tournament of over $1000! Admittedly in the places where we have our major tournaments, we also have very overtaxed police departments and you'll never seen an investigation for it. One police report for such did get made a couple of years ago, but it turned into a case of jurisdiction hot potato and nobody really knows where that went. I'd just moved here when that whole mess started...TPCi ended up suspending the player in question; I haven't seen him around anymore, so I think he got the message.

I like our culture against cheating, and while I don't believe recorded matches should be scrutinized for every little detail, when it's a huge, obvious case of cheating, with multiple references, TPCi should at least investigate the player's conduct.

has anyone actually officially brought this video to TPCi/OP's attention via a support ticket or other contact?

This made me sick. I don't know if Newman made his return to the game at this Regionals, but if he did, it is sure conveinient. Showing up for the largest event that you can attend without any qualification and then acting suspicious like that. Just saying.

no, he had been playing since states last year, he hasn't done anything nor has he made any news until now.
But I know from 3 different sources, 3 different cases, on 3 different battle roads this season, he has been reported for stacking/cheating JUST THIS SEASON.. I know he was at the Missouri State Tournament last season. But I cannot say what else he has attended, between there.

First I have heard of it. No judges called on any of those accusations you just made. Lotsa people complain about this stuff but never report.

Yeah, when I say reported I mean just a judge was informed.
Doug was informed, as well as Nick, and I said something to you.
But they were instances that couldn't be caught.
And there are 2 others just that I know of that have observed him stacking just like in the video.

edit: They weren't direct opponent accusations, 3rd party.

Good job not reporting it to me, the head judge of the event. As for that event, I had an eye on him all day, and he was aware of it. He doesn't try anything when he knows there's eyes on him. Which makes this even funnier, since he's all for cheating when there's a CAMERA right there.

If this is who I think it is, Master Blaster, I had no idea you were judging that BR.

Newman being a cheat is not exactly a secret. Personally I'm surprised he's still allowed to play this game.

When he made cut at Kansas States last year, I (as Head Judge) parked two judges on his T8 game and told them "you do nothing but watch him".

Perhaps unsurprisingly, he lost.

Oh, trust me -- he tries stuff even when you're watching, he's just more subtle. He knows exactly what he's doing. The shenanigans that were prevented by my two judges made for plenty of dinner table conversation the following day.

I think if he shows up this year, my judge instruction will be to allow him just enough rope to hang himself with.

That could be a good approach, though honestly one thing you might want is to get a few more recordings of his tricks, and keep him useful as a teaching tool for new judges. It seems like he could be a great resource! :p

So just out of curiousity, does anyone ever get banned from Pokemon tournaments?

Pokemon does not publicize their ban list (like Magic, for example), and does not discuss individual punishments with the community. However, through strong anecdotal evidence, we know that people do get banned from Pokemon tournaments. For example, Newman, the person who this thread is about, has been banned from Pokemon before for a different offense (bribery), and there are several reputable sources that can corroborate this fact.

Thanks for the reply. So it looks like bans are temporary, since he was able to participate in this recent Regionals?
