China death toll...

It's sad to see all of the crazy weather that has been occurring lately. Between the weather we've been getting here in the states, to the weather in China and Myanmar....it's crazy. But what makes me wonder, is how the united states has this money to send to Myanmar for Aid, when the economy of the US is pretty much shot at this point? I don't get it.

Well, I'm no expert but there is money set aside for disaster relief and usually we just take on more debt to give more assistance. The debt may be loans that we take on to provide money or just providing necessities and not charging for it.

wow.

so just as stated before during the tsunami, katrina, etc...the people who suffered/died in these disasters somehow 'deserved it' because they don't follow the 'right' religion according to certain 'religious leaders'?

  :nonono:

No!!!!!!

I am saying that when the world ends(bibilically speaking), there will be GREAT natural disasters of different types all over the world.
Tsunami, hurricane, earthquake, Tornado...flooding:O

All of these events have occured in the past 2-3 years more than Normal, I am actually a non religious dude, this is just from what I hear from family members who are highlighy religious who would miss the super bowl so they could re-read the bible.

I do feel for the people who have suffered.

Speaking of Myanmar, aren't they a new-age Nazi Country?

Also, I do feel that it is our duty to be the world police and help everyone out, but ourselves.*sarcasm*
Why are we sending money to a country that doesn't have good relations with us?
Whats the point in America sending money to anybody, Next to say, Iran, we are the most hated country there is.

myanmar is a military dictatorship, not 'nazis'. pro-democracy activists such as nobel peace prize recipient Aung San Suu Ky are routinely kept under house arrest.

the best, most compassionate, respectful, moving coverage of the earthquake's aftermath has been on NPR, imho. melissa block's audio description of the destroyed middle school and the parents waiting for word of their children was devastating to listen to :(

'all things considered' hosts robert siegal and melissa block are in china; they were preparing to broadcast a series there next week when caught in the quake. besides doing their normal ATC pieces, they are keeping a blog, here: http://www.npr.org/blogs/chengdu/ .

the most recent post, about the excavator and the parents hoping to find their baby, made me weep...audio of the story is here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90447603

Death Toll

They say that if one person dies it's a tragedy, but if a thousand people die it's a statistic.

As humans, it is almost impossible for us to grasp the destruction caused by these disasters. I think if I truly knew the grief caused by this event my brain would be completely overwhelmed. Science has shown that when you empathize your brain actually experiences pain.

For perspective, just imagine a close friend of yours died in a wreck. Now multiply that emotion by a hundred thousand and you come closer to understanding...

It's interesting the way our brains work. We can read a news story about the earthquake and not be affected by the 10,000 person death toll. But when we hear a personal news story about a few people or families and their missing children it moves us to tears. We don't always think rationally do we?

If you want to put the Myanmar cyclone loss into something most of us can grasp, imagine the Univ. of Michigan's "Big House" aka the football stadium filled to capacity, both teams included and then dropping a bomb there, killing all in the stadium. That is almost the equal to the 120,000 loss in Myanmar.

As for the China quake, it is even more devasting when you consider their 1 child/family rule. If you lose your child, you have no more left. So sad. A lawyer in my office told me the epicenter of the China quake was 20 miles from where his daughter taught last year. She is back in the USA now, and has been for a year or so, but I'm sure she has lost many of her friends from China.

PS NPR is quality radio. Always a good spot to listen on a drive.

Next is Rapture? I don't know. But I feel really bad about the whole erathquake thing.

Actually there is no mention of "Rapture" in the Bible.

The interesting part is that the dictators of Myanmar refuse to let the aid workers into the afflicted area. They take the high quality, foreign supplies from the aid workers, tell them they cannot enter the country, then they give the high quality supplies to the army, and finally they give lousy, domestic supplies to their suffering populace. So basically the aid that is meant for the victims is just being given to military.

The dictators in Myanmar are like babies compared to what the Nazis were like. If you ever talk to a Holocaust survivor you will know what I mean.

have you forgotten china's 'one child' policy?

Late reply, but the OCP is one of those "harsh but necessary" things. Consider that statistics show the average Chinese woman went from having 5-6 kids to having 2-3, and the sheer population of China, it can't exactly sustain such growth indefinitely. Something has to reduce the overall population figure, like it or not, or resources will flat-up run out.

IMHO I dont think the US should send help to china, specifically becuse of the recent turn of events with the chinese government. They have broken many promises to improve human rights, so why shouldw e trust them to ever pay us back. I dont mean monitarily pay us back, but when some disaster happens here, do you think China will help us as much as we are helping them? Not to mention the fact that China is one of the most powerful countries in the world. If any country could come back from a disaster, it would definatly be a powerful one, and seeing as China is a powerful country, why should we help them? What has China ever done for us?

This is a 5th Graders Thoughts: It's a very sad thing. But many people say "Oh, that's really sad" without any empathy at all. People don't care about something UNTIL it happens to them. We didn't care about bombings and terrorists untill 9/11. People won't care about this until THEY get affected
