China?

Eh it was pretty interesting, like most Chinese people were illiterate in the 1940s and the Chinese government decided to simplify the language...I don't think it'll ever be standardised.

Evens Cheung counts cos he's from Hong Kong! :)

Probably the political reason.
Since 1949 after the establishment of the PRC,
the civil war between PRC and Taiwan never been stopped.
(The PRC government claimed they will never stop the civil war unless they took back taiwan,
while taiwan in under control of KMT that time. Althrough they stopped firing each other since 1955)

All cultural contact / activities stopped for like 30 years (dont know the exact time)
plus during the "Cultual Revolution Period" in PRC,
the introdution of simplified chinese and the changing in grammering in the two states seprately
causing huge difference between Mainland Mandarin and Taiwanese Mandarin.

And the Hong Kong is Cantonese-based and its a british colony at the past.
Resulting in such "two continent three culture".


The EX-LM is translated into Taiwanese Traditional Chinese and put into market last year in Taiwan.
But they are not for sold in PRC and Hong Kong.
Like 7 years ago there was Taiwanese Traditional Chinese version of base set 1,
but maybe due to the poor sales figure the WotC stopped continueting this project.

寵物小精靈 in Hong kong (寵物means pet, 小精靈 means fairy)

神奇寶貝 in Taiwan (神奇 means wizardly, 寶貝 means little treasured one)
(n.b. in Classical Chinese, 寶貝 this phrase sometime refers to the missed part of an eunuch LOL)

^ i heard those 4 names when pokemon 1st introduced,and i wonder wats up with translation LOL

IMO 口袋怪獸 in PRC and (口袋 means pocket, 怪獸 means monsters) is the best translation referring to pokemon,and i thought 神奇寶貝 in Taiwan (神奇 means wizardly, 寶貝 means little treasured one)is used on digimons?

Althrough 口袋怪獸 (sometimes 口袋妖怪) is the best translation referring to pokemon,
but its extremely difficult to speak it out fast in Cantonese,
( 口袋怪獸 Hau2-Doi2-Gwai3-Sau3 , 口袋妖怪 Hau2-Doi2-Yiu2-Gwai3 )

Same situation in 神奇寶貝 ( Sun4-Kei4-Bou2-Bui3 )
寵物小精靈 one seems to be better LOL




Digimon is called 數碼寶貝 in taiwanese chinese LOL (數碼 means digital)
Both little treasured one, but one digital, one more mystic LOL
In Hong Kong digimon is called 數碼暴龍 (暴龍means T-Tar LOL) and its easier to speak it out in Cantoneses.
Having this strange translation is due to nearly all starting digimon is dinosaur-like :lol:



However for Yu-gi-oh, chinese from the 3 places having a united name: 遊戲王
Same as Japanese Kanji :thumb:

Back in the day, WotC gave us boxes of Chinese Base Set 1st Edition when we judged a Super Trainer Showdown.
It was very interesting that on the box, the word Pokemon was filled in with red coloring rather than the usual yellow! (It was still yellow on the card backs, though).

I had thought they were for mainland China. I didn't realize they were for Taiwan. Interesting.
 
I was hoping to start a Chinese Language League here in Seattle. A group of local Chinese parents were trying to find a way to keep their kids interested in the Chinese language and wanted to start a league using cards printed in Chinese. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to locate a reliable source of cards...
 
Very interesting thread. I'm guessing that economic disparity takes a back seat to political concerns as to why no OP exists in Korea, where disposable income is much higher.
 
Some Koreans make millions a year playing Starcraft professionally so it would be much better to practice Starcraft then play this game and make alot less money.
 
I live in Hong Kong but I'm an Australian. I play the english pokemon cards but I hate how there're no leagues or tournaments.

I bought three sealed booster boxes (English cards) while in China.
Some of the packs were a little odd though. Like, I pulled a lot of non-holo cards that were supposed to holo, some Charmealeon titled "Combusken," and a few "Clayd0l EX"...
I picked up these cards right outside one of the districts in Shanghai where you can get some spoked clothing. Anyways, I have no idea where my vender got his cards. Although I can say there was probably no League near by. Note that these were not Chinese cards...
