European Hawaii Trips through rankings

I updated the lists to include the ongoing Danish BRs.

Such a surprise that the Danish National Champions are losing so many points all of a sudden, and other Danish players are entering the trip spots ;) Next year will we see Nats as the last tournament of the season...?

Also, I'm not saying this just because it affects me, but I think it would be great if next year Europe could get T6 through rankings for Masters as well. The way it stands now, means that THREE players with a rating of above 2000 won't make it through the rankings. I think 2000 is an amazing rating, and really hard to obtain.

There are only 2 JR/SR players in Europe with a ranking of 2000+. And there are 7 Masters with a ranking of 2000+, 3 of which are gonna miss out on trips :(

It is true that conceding for any reason is allowed as long as there is no inducement offered or sought. But the outbreak of high ranked players who have a trip conceding does make a bit of a mockery of the rating system selecting the top six candidates from a region rather than say the six with the most highly ranked friends.

Still it is what it is this year. Warts and all.

A plea:-

Can some high rated players come to the High Wycombe battle road this Sunday. Nicholas could do with a few friends to give him a leg up into the top 6. Actually I'd settle for just about anyone to turn up at High Wycombe (its actually Maidenhead - go figure) this Sunday. (Seniors preferred for obvious reasons) I'll supply the theme decks for them to use!

Surely we can all see what is wrong with this???

Ian, please give me a theme deck!!!

It's a dilema for me. I'm happy to play with Metathemedecknite.DEC so Nich can go to Worlds but it's a long way to High Wycombe.

sure, but you have to give it back at the end. No keepsies as that might be considered a bribe....

Well then if I go to High Wycombe, I'll give it my all. Let's hope it turns out like the High Wycombe Regional and we can all dance in a circle of joy.

Of course it's legal, that's the whole problem :p If it wasn't legal, the National Champions from a LOT of countries (Norway, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, etc.) would be a lot higher up in the rankings!

Nats should be the last tourney before rankings invites are determined just for the things that seem to be happening in Europe. If you have your trip secured via Nats, points dont matter anymore! That is why the USA, last year, once you won an invite at a GC, you were excluded from playing in others (to play KO or concession purposes).

Just in case anyone else other than our family of four is going to the High Wycombe battle Road this Sunday - please note that its not in High Wycombe but at Maidenhead SL6 2RA

I concur with Keith, rated BRs after nationals are a bad idea. Mind you in the UK we have been struggling to find battle roads with more than two or three seniors attending :( we looked at traveling to the remaining European battle roads but it doesn't make sense as the cost of traveling to Europe for myself and Nicholas is the same as one of us going to Hawaii!

Traveling around Europe is indeed expensive, I can tell you.
I think I said it before, but it seems to be better to:
1. Have all Nationals in June and BR ending end of may for all countries.
or
2. Winners of a Worlds invite will not give any opponent points (win or loose).
They still can play for the tournament prizes but they will not affect anybody's ranking.

N. picked up the first round bye and was paired outside his age group twice at High Wycombe STP. He didn't gain as many points as he might have done, but he didn't loose any either which is a good thing right now.

loosing is very bad late season.

Maidenhead SL6 2RA this Sunday. Be THERE or be somewhere else

Today Martina (IT) got second at Italian Nationals, so I'm expecting her to shoot up the rankings in Senior (too bad for the Seniors on the top of the ranking list that she didn't win her final). At the same time, Jasper (NL) and Linnea (NO) went 3-1 at Netherlands last's Battle Road - which means they'll lose points ... ? Finland also had their last Battle Roads now, so I'm very curious about how the Senior list will look now.

No seniors other than Nicholas at the High Wycombe Battle Road... which means no points . A couple of donks at nationals from Flariados (its not called donk-a-dos for nothing! ) and both the nationals invite and the ratings invite evaporated :(. Two losses could leave Martina fairly stationary in the rankings. It all depends upon there being other high rated players in Italy. If Martina's only loss was in the final then she should get one of the ratings invites. As far as I could tell from simulations and previoius years ratings that was POPs intention. To have the K values for Nationals sufficient that a second placed player who went X-1 (only lost in the finals) would finish the year with a high rating if attendance at and position prior to nationals were both high. High enough to reward that second place finish with a ratings invite. Winners get to go to worlds and serveral second place finishers too.

Actually, Jasper went 4-0 at the Dutch last BR, and then dropped to secure his points. I'm not sure if that was wise, because I think the only other high-ranked player he beat was Linnea, which would mean he'd gain something like 30 points, putting him at ~1920-1930, not enough for an invite. Linnea went 3-1 and got 5th (6th if Jasper hadn't dropped).

Ouch for there not being any other Seniors at High Wycombe. How is that possible in a country which has so many players in the rankings...?

Very curious about Finland's result, yeah. Then it's just Netherlands' Nationals and a few BRs in France for the Masters. Wouldn't be surprised if Laetitia suddenly gained 20-30 points in those..

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Updated with this weekend's results. 1 of the FI BRs is not uploaded yet, nor is the Italian Nats, so it will change again in the coming few days.

because the NL nationals is the last of the season dropping at 4-0 is probably the right thing to do (tactically that is). Jasper will have a very good idea of what is required at NL nationals to secure the invite and a 4-0 boost in points has got to make that 6th place a distinct possibility, whereas 4-1 would turn the tournament into a nett loss.

Looking at the rankings this morning 4-0 looks like the perfect decision, the Italian nationals have yet to be included but that 4-0 has moved Jasper high enough to currently hold the 6th ratings invite.

I have no idea why the UK battle roads have very poor attendance. 8 players total at High Wycombe BR, and we provided 4 of them. We know from earlier in the season that there is a bit of a sigh from the local seniors when we turn up. We will know if its worth travelling to Blackpool this weekend sometime after Wednesday when a few more of the remaining European tournaments are completed. Doesn't seem very likely though.

props to Linnea for having a go. I would have liked to be there but its actually not much more expensive to go to Hawaii from the UK! Go Figure.

Martina went 6-3 (4-2 in swiss) losing to low ranked players....

no trip in senior for Italy i think

It looked like dropping was indeed to right thing to do, because right now Jasper's in the last trip spot. I'm not sure what his plans for Nats are, but I hope he wins a trip either way =)

Unlucky for Martina =(
