Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

gengar vrs kingdra matchup

Pray! Haha. Kingdra doesn't run too many trainers (can discard them if need be with dragon pump), runs nidoqueen, only has claydol & uxie on bench normally (both which are normally g'd).....your best bet is run nidoqueen & use poltergeist a lot.

Run Gengar with a 2-2-1 Gliscor line. It's MUCH easier if they don't run Nidoqueen, but even with it you'll have a fighting chance if you manage to take out their Claydol before they G it up.

How does it work? Drop the Gliscor LvX and Paralyze/Poison/Pester for 90. They heal down to 70 and then you Night Slash back to the bench for the KO and bring up a Gengar. To keep it going, next turn you'll have to take the free retreat and Burning Poison the Gliscor back to your hand (it's double weak to water so you NEVER want to leave it active).

Give it a try.

Way to not be helpful guys >.>

Play Miasma in your Gengar. It allows you to put early pressure on claydols, and the occasional Horsea. and it allows you to stop them from poisoning you. Kill claydol if you get the chance. If you are having that much of an issue run 4 Blower and 3 Lookers. Pull up their Guarded dol and Poltergeist it.

To everyone that thinks it's impossible how.....???

They two hit Ko you, you two hit Ko them. You have Nidoqueen and Fainting Spell. And you can snipe all there Uxie's and Claydol's.

How does Gengar 2HKO Kingdra?

They will just Claydol their Trainers or discard them with Dragon Pump.

There are two ways of winning this match-up.

1) playing queen and totally lucksacking on fainting spell (and that's if they don't psy restore you!).

2) flipping the table over and blaming it on your opponent.

Well most Kingdra build's tend to play some thing along the line's of a 30 engine so if they do cosmic power them. there is a good chance they will get more back with cosmic power. At some point they will have supporter's/Stadium's in thier hand which they can't get rid of. And even with trainer's if you use them to stop Poltergiest it will come back to haunt you late game.

It is not a guarantee you get the two hit ko but there is a good chance it will. I like looker's for that reason. Because you can know what damage you are able to do.

Gengar beats Kingdra from my testing. I believe that a Gengar can easily turn a game around with ease. You can Nidoqueen their Kingdras too.

Kingdra just discards trainers it cant get rid of, if you ever 2hko a kingdra with poltergeist your opponent hast either the worst luck in the world or no idea what he's doing :/

Three more tech alternatives , assuming your base is Gengar / Nidoqueen and a minimum of 2 Moonlights to bring or retreat Queens at will :

- Ditto + a couple of multi energies : you can dragon pump them back and get cured between turns ...
- Potergeist Rotom ( works with psychic energies ) + Lucario GL in bench ... with one or two prior shadow rooms , one of these with a couple of trainers in hand take them out
- 2-2 Manectric PL + Lucario GL ... if benched, no dragon pump splash on your bench .. if active , spreads to G'd Claydols , Uxies, and Cycler Bronzongs the same , crippling their resources , or 80 with two energies and Lucario GL benched ( and gets cured in the process , with free retreat also )

You can build an optimized Gengar Queen for Kingdra , but that may weaken you for other matchups ... that's the beauty of this game. And for Nats there will be no metagame as you will face people from all over .. but ditto or Poltergeist Rotom + Lucario GL are not expensive alternatives.

One of my kids constantly faces Kindgra in top cuts and I've built for him a solid Gengar-Queen list . it's not easy but he wins most of the time. If you run a SP based deck ( like my other kid does ) , a Luxray GL based deck with Lucario GL benched just destroys kingdra .

Good luck.

thanks, rob-GAJP. will try.

mother gengars your best bet because it takes 3 turns 2 kill your gengar so you take 2 hits retreat for another gengar and because kingdra's sniping doesn't work you should destroy kingdra (plus if you kill claydol they can't draw and they lose)
