I'm interested in booking a room at the Hilton

Hello Folks,

I'm interested in booking a room at the Hilton for this years World Championship. If you have roomed there before, how was it, how clean was the rooms, how frendiley was the staff, and which tower has the best view of the Ocean?

Thank you for reading and your support.

The Lagoon Tower likely has the best view of the Ocean. All the rest are hit-and-miss. It all depends on which room you are given when you get there.

Staff are reasonably friendly for a Luxray hotel. (Pun intended) Our room was large and clean, but had a view of the golf course and condos next door.

Last time it seemed that about 2/3 of the Pokemon players were housed in the Palace Tower, and 1/3 were housed in the Ocean tower. The Ocean tower was closest to most of the kid-friendly activities: the kid swimming pool and the most family friendly restaurant (The Boat Landing), but is farthest from the ballroom where the tournament was held.

Here is a map of the resort:

I seem to remember someone saying that the resort was the same size or slightly larger than Disneyland. Yes, that is a mono-rail running between the towers. And that is a canal with 20-25 ft boats running between the towers as well. (Last time, the boats were generally faster, since only one train set was running, but they were more difficult to manage luggage on. Walking was generally the fastest means from getting from one point to the next, by the time you figured in wait time for the boat, plus load/unload time.

It is an amazingly nice hotel. The are only a few issues, cost, food, and internet are the main ones. Everything is expensive but the hotel is very cool. You could not leave the hotel and have a great time. It is also one of the T10 (maybe T5) hotels in the World when it comes to size.

Is there such thing as a discount for people booking in the Hilton for Worlds? A nice extra bonus like free Internet or a cheaper rate would make everything a lot better...

Also, What is Kona like?

There has been a "Pokemon" rate in the past, although that is no guarantee that there will be one this year. These generally don't get posted until late June or early July, and are generally similar to a Triple A discounted rate.

Kona is on the dry side of Hawaii. The surrounding countryside is basically a huge lava flow from the 1800's - lots of sharp black rocks and a few scrubby grasses. There is a small strip of beach, with some palm trees between the lava and the beach. The hotels and golf courses are an oasis of green.

Just over the ridge - approximately 10-15 miles away is the wet side of Hawaii - with lush jungles, where it rains nearly every day (although it isn't a constant rain, and it is warm.)

Temperatures are in the upper 70's at night and upper 80's in the day. Bring lots of sunscreen, because the mid-day sun is very intense, and most tourists burn easier than they do at home. It is humid, but it didn't seem as bad as Florida.

What would be the best option to score a hotel room for the cheapest:
- Get the Hotel Room + Air Travel combo from Popular Airfare places...
- Ask and try to get the Pokemon Discount at the Hilton Reservations number and then buying airfare...

Kona doesnt sounds too extravagant, I am sure I will enjoy getting a nice tan!
I know that there are nearby foodstuffs and other entretainment besides the hotel... But when it comes to the hotel itself, how good/bad/expensive are thing over there?

I already setting up everything to be there by August 12... I expect to see a lot of familiar faces, hopefully!

In 2007 it seemed that the prices for regular goods at the local stores were about 10% higher than on the mainland - although the closest grocery store is 4-5 miles away from the resort.

We had a hard time finding cheap food on-site. The hotel website has menus with prices. Prices at the hotel were about double what you would find in the local stores: A 6 oz juice box was $4.00 at the Boat Landing. The hotel website has menus with prices, so you can budget. And we were a captive audience for the lunch, although the hotel sent up a hot dog/sandwich/burger buffet for the Pokemon players.

It seems like it would be better to come in, register at hotel, get ASAP to WalMart/Grocer Store and stock up for the weekend... I really have to check locations before I leave. Also, 'mom posted a list of cheap eats around Kona... I wonder how far they are from the hotel.

Either way, Im pretty sure that trips will be organized and everyone can pitch in for a taxi/cab to scout for some food... Right? [My con experience might come in handy when it comes to frugal eats... Hmmmm.... Coffee Maker Spaghetti or Oatmeal... Or even Easy Bake Muffins!]

hmmm.... considering bringing food all the way from honolulu or the airport at kona...lololol

The Pokemon rate in San Diego was actually more than what my family got when we just walked into the hotel with no reservation and booked a room lol

last time worlds was at the hilton in kona, there was a small gift store that had some basic grocery-type things...cereal, bread, jam, peanut butter, snack foods, drinks etc...in the little shopping center adjacent to the resort.

there was a tram that ran from the hilton to the shopping center; i don't remember if it was free or if there was a small (busfare-type) charge. prices were on the 7-11/convenience store level, so higher than walmart/grocery...but MUCH lower than buying onsite at the hilton's stores.

bringing food is an idea too, if you have the room/weight to spare in your luggage now that most airlines charge per bag. i brought individual bottles of orange juice (each double ziploc bagged) and some breakfast-type food last time. the rooms had small refrigerators and coffee makers.

I wouldnt mind spending 15-20$ on a cab to go to a near WalMart / Grocer to buy some food... After all, I can empty by luggage at the hotel and then fill it and come back.

Research is needed... Google maps is my BFF =D

EDIT:

Nearest Wal-Mart? Bad Idea - HERE IS WHY ... Altho, From the Airport to Walmart, the distance is LIKE THIS

Seems like getting extra cards or cheap sleeves on-site will be like a NO. Better to research local Card Shops instead [and its always better that way].

Time for Plan B... since Costco and Target are around the same area... which is far.

Does anyone recall the Pokemon room rate from 2007? I think I heard it was about $220 USD for a very cramped queen X 2. I was looking into renting a one bedroom suite at the Hilton (so we could populate it with players on a budget) and if booked in advance, it was about $450 USD.

I just booked a very large, 3 bedroom 2 and 1/2 bath condo at the:

Aston Waikoloa Colony Villas, 69-555 Waikoloa Beach Drive

(The address of the Hilton is 69-425 Waikoloa Beach Drive and the walking distance is 15 to 20 minutes. If you have been to the Hilton, you know it can take you 15 minutes from your room to the ballroom while you are on site - the place is immense)

The Aston price was $245/night USD for the 3 bedrooms and the condo is geared for 8 people. There is a full kitchen, table that seats 8 inside and many more on the lanai, garage and laundry facilities. $245 divided by 8 people is $30.63 USD + taxes. Taxes in Hawaii are at about the 13% range. I personally plan on renting a car since there is no public transportation in Hawaii, however, there is no reason you can't do your taxi/grocery trip thing and stock a full sized fridge at your condo next door to the Hilton. Heck, you can pack lunches for Worlds if you can't afford or don't want to afford the $20 Hilton burgers

Check it out - it might work for you. There are two bedroom condos which would sleep 6 as well. And make sure to Mapquest the two locations. http://www.astonhotels.com/aston/propertyOverview.do?propertyGroupId=45451

Hey, i'm also thinking about booking a room at the Hilton.
Is this pokemon-discount only available when you just show up and check-in or also when booking up front?
And does anyone know, if i book right now, can i still get that pokemon discount if it will be announced later?
Anyone has experience with that? And about how much was this discount the last years?

We already have our room booked at the Hilton Waikoloa.
We paid around 3000 $ for 2 rooms with 2 beds each. And we stay like 7 days and 6 nights.
So we paid about 250 $ per night for a 2-bed-room.
=) For the food-thing, we rent a car and go to nearby restaurants that are like half the price of Hilton-food.
(like in good old 2007 ;) ) kona has some great locations to find good, pricy food and if you drive about 15 minutes north there is a small fisher-town where a little restaurant is located...
I would realy recommend a trip to the north of the island. It's so beautiful up there with amazing beaches & rainwoods...

oh man...

im so considering getting food in honolulu before i go over to kona...

one question.

what sort of food am i allow to take for carry on for a flight between honolulu and kona ?

Avoid Fruits, Liquids and Gels.
Bring in Jerky, Instant stuff and miscellaneous... But Perishables are banned.
Also, keep in mind weight, Its better to stuff powdery stuff than a can of soup.

Jai, all good. I don't deal with fruit myself, and sucks that I can't deal with coke lol. S'pose there must be somewhere in the island of Kona that sells bulk coke.

Is some box of coke allowed to be in check in luggage?
