Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Is this it for pokemon?

Well that's is because people probably feel that every generation that there is no way they could come up with another one.

Diamond pearl should have been the end, seeing as how the poke-gods (Giratina, Palkia, Dialga, ARCEUS) are automatically the most powerful pokemon in the universe. Then we get generic dragons with massive butts.

Nintendo's a shadow of what it was, clinging on to the success of all of its franchises through one remake after another. Personally I'd like to see it go out with a bang, a Zelda Collector's Edition style compilation of the games' history, say for DS with full link compatibility in full retro glory. Celebrate what it was then leave it be. That's not going to happen because dragging it down into the grave further and further is profitable. Each new generation seems somewhat stale, adding little to the original formula that was so successful. The original 150 is where it's at. Not another 500, or 10 event pokemon each generation. 3 starters, 1 event pokemon, 1 in-game uber and three legendary birds was the winning classic formula. Leave it be.

While it's true that Nintendo is a shadow of what it once was, remember that they are trying to be "different" in the video game market compared to Microsoft and Sony. Infact they are mostly trying to appeal to Casual gamers as with most of the Games that Microsoft and Sony produce mainly cater to the Hardcore Gamers. There was a perfect balance between this during the Nintendo 64 years because back then Nintendo was still dominating the Video Game Industry with Sony coming in second but when Microsoft entered the scene that was when the divide happened between those two different types of Gamers. The problem is that Nintendo only wants to cater to Casual Gamers and they fear that If they start bringing in games licensed for Hardcore Gamers it could hurt their company when that's clearly the opposite, a weak economy results in less risk taking unfortunately.

The Nintendo 64 Era was proof that Nintendo could cater to both Casual and Hardcore Gamers alike especially when you look at classic titles like GoldenEye 007,
Conker's Bad Fur Day, Perfect Dark, and much more. I don't understand why Nintendo is afraid to go back to those years from the late 90's when they had a much more diverse game pool for their own console. This is part of the reason why the Nintendo Wii didn't do so well outside as a Multiplayer Console. Gamers couldn't play games that appealed to Hardcore Gamers on the Wii like Call of Duty or Halo so they are forced to play on other consoles thus hurting Nintendo even more. Back then you could have your cake and eat it, but now you can't cause the enjoyment to play specific games are divided by individual consoles. Microsoft doesn't know how to appeal to Casual Gamers like Nintendo does with Hardcore Gamers.

And as for the cards: One card for each pokemon, not ten different artworks for each. You pulled a Charizard, you HAD Charizard, that was the whole appeal! Not a Chairzard ex and a Charizard * and delta and God knows what else. It went downhill with the Team Rocket and Gym sets, profitable sure, but sapping at the very iconic cultural status Pokemon had achieved. Yu-gi-oh went the same way - you had Dark Magician, Blue eyes white dragon, mirror force, it was classic, people liked it.

Well the thing that caused Yu-Gi-Oh! to go downhill was the excessive power creep of the TCG itself, the Anime/Manga on the other hand is after the whole Arc where Yami Yugi a.k.a. Atem goes back to Ancient Egypt there was no more source material to add to the original story thus the creators made spin-off after spin-off of the same series (which severely hurt it but 5D's sort of made up for it) each progressing towards the future where up to now with Zexal it looks like a world where Religion and Christianity never existed in the year 2050 something. It was bad enough when 5D's introduced the use of playing card games on motorcycles but Zexal was where it jumped the shark. GX was just a rip-off of Harry Potter.

Pokemon as a TCG had been doing alright for at least a decade and now it needs to get back on track after peaking with Diamond and Pearl. The situation with the Anime on the other hand, as they say it was good up to Hoenn or Sinnoh whichever one you preferred but I think it had alot to do with 4Kids losing their contract with the English Dub of the series and turning it over to PUSA which has been doing the Dub for Pokemon since the middle of Hoenn when 4Kids got in trouble for their horrible One Piece dub which was later resurrected by FUNimation. I thought the Sinnoh series was pretty good in terms of animation style that has stayed true with the Anime for years and then they decide to change it with Unova which was stupid IMO. The new Pokemon designs of Unova at least most of them only made it worse from there.

I guess you could say that the Pokemon franchise as a whole has recently failed to capture the magic it once had back in the late 90's and early 2000's in terms of the Anime series and I think alot of it has to do with the designs of each Generation. You look back since the beginning back in 1995 when it debuted in Japan before reaching America in the very late 90's and you can tell it has gotten worse and worse. The U.S. has failed to use the power of capitalism during the franchises' resurgence in the media in 2008 or 2009 I should say mostly due to the Recession and that other companies that used to support Pokemon or could have are targeting other kid franchises from Japan like Bakugan Battle Brawlers or even Hello Kitty which is a franchise from Asia targeted to young girls. Heck Beyblade is making a bigger comeback Anime wise than Pokemon is which is saddening.

I will admit that the Pokemon Manga itself doesn't get as much exposure in the U.S. as it does in Japan infact, the franchise as a whole doesn't get enough exposure outside of Japan that it should nowadays. Maybe it's due to the weak Global Economy, I dunno but what I do know is that PUSA, TPCi, and co. aren't trying hard enough to make the Pokemon franchise successful again after it's resurgance from Gen 4 in terms of the video games. The TCG during that timeframe was doing great as well, still is somewhat nowadays but could be better. I just think it's inexcusable that we have a franchise like Pokemon that has been one of Nintendo's successful landmark franchises with a successful TCG, a successful video game genre, but yet the only part of the franchise that's falling behind is the Anime? What gives? Did they decide to stick with the Pokemon Manga for now on or something?

Yeh, I understand, but for casual gamers, younger gamers etc there is still a range of potential quality and I don't feel Nintendo's hitting the standard for this market or any by remaking old games.

This is what I mean, they've lost their direction. There isn't such a dichotomy between casual and hardcore. games like Zelda, Mario Pokemon, etc could appeal to both, and DID, but Nintendo is making games too basic and simple to be enjoyable to many.

I haven't watched the newer Yu-gi-oh episodes, but imo they'd have been better continuing on with more of the same than spin-offs. Power creep backs up what I'm saying, its greed from the company. Profitable to make the cards stronger and stronger each new set but in doing so destroys the very spirit of the game itself.

I'm indifferent to the anime, my comments regarded the games and tcg. I agree with your insight.

GX was meh. YGO 5Ds is overrated by fans. Zexal just sucks. The biggest problem is they're breaking away from what made Yugioh what it is.

OT: As long as Pokemon=$$$, it's not going anywhere.

WRT the Nintendo Casual/Hardcore thing, Mario Galaxy 2 was a big jump in difficulty from the first.., and Skyward Sword is reasonably difficult.

Pikachu is now an internationally known iconic cartoon figure which seems to indicate that the franchise will continue in some form or another for many years to come. People who have absolutely no knowledge of the games can now identify Pikachu (even though some call the character "Pokemon") This kind of recognition is priceless in the business world and certainly points to continued success.

Maybe they could make episodes with richy and sparky ashes counterpart who catches the same okemos as him and gives them nicknames!!!!!

^ And then 100% of all older fans will proceed to stop liking it and consequentially the new gen won't hear as many ppl talknig about it.
