Okay, so I ran it as promised. And just to make sure it saw plenty of action, I brought an MT booster box with me and made an offer -- play me, you get a pack, beat me, you get two. A line to play me formed rather quickly.
The conclusion? Yes, it is way too good. I went 6-2, but could have easily gone 8-0. I changed one card, -1 Copycat (because I apparently only have two?!?), +1 Time-Space Distortion. Other than that I played the deck as printed.
One loss shouldn't even have counted. It was the first game of the day, and I never drew a single energy card. And this wasn't like a one basic donk game, this actually went for nine or ten turns.
Nothing. We will place this result on the edge of the bell curve and disregard it.
Second loss, ironically, was to the same guy, but this time we actually had a match. He starts with Latios ex δ
water: type == bad). I begin with Magby and burn him. He is fairly energy dry, and by the time he finally gets Latios powered and takes out Magby, Latios succumbs to the burn...lol. But it ends with me just not paying attention -- I had my winning move completely planned out, and just failed to notice he had whittled me down to one prize. He donks MagX with 2x weakness (didn't have the luck of getting a FF on it), gg. Really should have won this one.
There was one epic game in the midst of all the action. Ironically, it was against another Magmortar deck. The game involved me playing MagX three different times, along with some of the worst coin flip luck I have ever witnessed -- like, 8 heads in a row for opponent's burn, then me playing TSD to pull back MagX and getting three tails. A grueling victory, but a victory still.
Anyway, adding the Magbys was the play. Being able to unload 80 per turn with no discard cost is sheer brutality. Half the games did not even require MagX thanks to that. Also, Scorch can be an early game-breaker, as illustrated above.
The only disappointing part of the day? The booster box had two LvX's (Electivire and Lucario) -- and they both went in the packs I gave out. /sadpanda. Rest of the box wasn't too bad, though
