Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Map of (most) Leagues in the UK

...have you been to Antics recently? Antics has been sent league materials in the recent past. http://www.op.pokemon-tcg.com/league/details/?id=4201

====================

Wearing my OP support hat....

All Leagues have to report attendance and have to have play times scheduled if they are to stay visible on the locator and continue to receive league materials. I'm not picking on Antics with that comment, quite a few UK leagues seem to think that reporting is optional. It may have been in the past but that has to change.

Seems to be a big hole in West / South West London/Surrey/Middlesex Border - Maybe we should fill it?

I would suggest contacting the Players Club in Slough, I did run an event with them a few years back and they are already running YGO and MTG events. And they have a venue ready to go. :thumb:

And of course we are running twice a month in Normandy not far from Guildford too .. so you can always drop in on us if you like :D

wow, there's none in suffolk? :[

but a nice useful thing that i could use :p

We really could use a league in the Ipswich/ Woodbridge area. That would be perfect for us, the Norwich league is great and we make the 40mile journey there every Friday but it would be nice to have another league a little closer to home too

Lol well at 34 I am definitely old enough :thumb:

However I am only just starting to learn. My daughter has been obsessed with pokemon characters for the last year. This August she got into cards, we discovered that the whole family likes the cards. I love the strategy involved in them and enjoy playing too although I am still pretty much a novice but learning fast. The other thing is that I am a poke mum not a poke dad which may not be deemed cool enough to encourage attendance at any league I might run in the future

I would love to run a league but we would need someone who knew all the rules not just some of the rules at league wouldn't we?

Nothing wrong with a poke mom as a league leader. Poke moms are cool too.

Willingness to learn and a desire to have a fun fair friendly environment are much more important than knowing every detail of how the game is played. The biggest hurdle after finding a venue is being sufficiently committed to dedicate the time every week to your new league.

I am sure that SD PokeMom would agree on that one

Hobbes130 welcome to the clan and hope you and your stay a while it is amazing how many Pokemon League Leaders around the world started because of their kids and stayed because they love the game too :thumb:

Thank you for the welcome  I think I'll be around a while can't quite put my finger on why I like this so much but it is strangely addictive.

My husband and I (lol I sound like the Queen) are giving some thought to setting up a Suffolk league, I think it is something we could do and do well too :thumb: We might not know much about the game yet but organising things we are great at  I used to be an events organiser and my husband is great at graphic design so he could make posters/ leaflets etc with ease. So I think we have a few skills to bring to the table. I also work in schools so I am CRB checked as well which I think is a legal requirement if you are doing anything with children these days.

How long would you say it takes to build the stepping stones of starting a league. I am thinking that if I contacted the shop suggested by nopoke I could be looking at launching in the new year maybe? Spend November and December advertising and drumming up interest and then launch in early Jan. What do you think? How long does it take to get accepted as a league and what steps do I need to have in place other than securing a venue.

CRB lol I have been CRB II Checked so much in the last year working with local schools and libraries with Pokemon and YGO after schools clubs that I often think my life is one long round of form filling :D

However in answer to the how long question I would start as soon as you can, don't delay it is amazing how once word gets out leagues grow. Posters, Flyers and if you can get it local news support really help and just being on the league list will too. But you don't need a long build up and if you are in a shop you have no venue fees or insurances to worry about either.

Don't forget the web a site will help and I can also send you details of the TCG meetme we are just getting off the ground. Oh and do let me know when you start up and we'll get you into Pokemon World Magazine too as a new league and then it is all about getting yourselves known.

Ok thanks :thumb:

I'll send you a pm so with my email so you can keep me updated and I'll let you know how things are progressing. I'll try giving the shop a ring for starters tomorrow

Just having a quick nosy around again and thought I would come in with a bit of info to try and shed a bit of light on this:

The reason Hull hasn't really resurfaced is down to a mixture of venue locations, player base, and people able to actually run the events in the first place. The only games store in Hull is Archeron, which for some odd reason the owner of which is unwilling to put any sort of time or commitment into the OP side of things.

This is why I decided to go independant in the first place. Finding other venues in Hull is a tricky business though - the city centre doesnt have many viable locations for people on a budget, which is exactly why we had to go a bit further out to Hessle. Still not cheap by any means.

As I mentioned last year, we had to quit with Ace Gaming partly due to my new time constraints coupled with a dwindling player base (these players tending to move onto MTG, WoW etc) which was increasingly difficult to maintain. I think about 60-70% of our budgeting went to advertising in the end? Something along those lines.

Lastly we did have a couple of people that wanted to continue Pokemon OP in Hull, however they either lacked the financial means or were too young to do so (the parents did not have time either unfortuantly).

From an outsider looking in the obvious thing to assume at the moment is "Hey, mabye you didnt advertise it properly?" - however I assure you there was a great deal of effort put into that area. Internet, flyers, posters, newspapers, radio, magazines. We even got a feature on BBC Look North a few years ago.

Mabye it is just something about Hull, who knows. Jaedon seems to have made a pretty good impression on Leeds which is just 40 minutes West of here.

Hope everyone's doing OK anyway, not spoken in well over a year!

Ben
