Well...they used to be. I remember after Vheissu came out I saw them on tour with Underoath and The Bled. The whole show was amazing. Thrice did a 23-song set, and just went crazy on Identity Crisis/Illusion of Safety stuff which was nice.

Then....the Alchemy Index albums came out. Disappointing to us fans of early work, but it was something. Then I heard Beggars....and decided I'm pretty much done with Thrice at this point. I understand bands want to evolve and blah blah, but to completely ditch what made your sound amazing is too much. Same thing with Brand New....went completely downhill. Daisy was alright, but it just isn't the same.

Music today is about moneyyyy. If 5,000,000 people like to dance and sing along to poppy stuff, and 10,000 other people like something 'talented' and 'skillful,' what do you think the radio and tv are going to play? 9/10 people would rather see Lady Gaga over Dream Theater. Or Britney over Radiohead. Or Maroon 5 over Thrice. It is what it is...money is what makes the world go roundddd.
QFT.

But the way I see it, talent and skill are in the eye of the beholder. 100,000 pop fans wouldn't say the music they like is bad. 100,000 screamo fans wouldn't say their music is bad.

But some pop fans would say screamo is all screaming and no talent.

Some screamo fans would say pop is all synth and no talent.

Personal opinion is personal. Big music companys base their entire INDUSTRY off fan opinion.

Yeah, Vheissu and earlier is amazing. I actually kinda like the first Alchemy Index, as some of it is kinda Radiohead-esque.

Beggars took me a while to get used to, but it still isn't amazing imo. Major/Minor (their newest) is a bit heavier. Not heavy to the point of Artist in the Ambulance, but take Vheissu, remove the electronic stuff, and you have Major/Minor.

Also, just got two more Modest Mouse albums: The Moon & Antarctica and The Lonesome Crowded West. So. Freaking. Good.

LOL

you say Drake sucks, but yet you say LL Cool J is better...

so you're telling me "Mama Said Knock You Out" was an amazing single compared to anything Drake has done? LOL.

Drake is great -- he can rap, sing & write lyrics like a madman. I think THAT alone takes skill. Just because you like Modest Mouse and Coldplay :)lol:) doesn't mean that a genre you don't like is anything less than what you do like. Skill and talent come in all forms and variations. Someone who goes "I lovezz me sum Ozzy and Slipknot yeaaahhhhhh!!" 99% of the time isn't going to enjoy artists like Musiq, Drake, Wale, etc. because they are vastly different -- doesn't make yours any better than theirs. You're just two different people who like two different types of music.

For instance, one of the most underrated bands I know is Thursday. You put on "Full Collapse" and I could put it on repeat the rest of my life. Granted, not every album has been 10/10, but there is no denying their abilities and talents. Would a hardcore Lil' Wayne fan enjoy them? Maybe not. But it doesn't make my band any less talented because of it. You catch my drift?

It's not that i have totally distant musical tastes. Old rap and new rap are just that; rap.

and yeah, Cool J's done better collabs and singles than Drake has done...Knock you Out, Flava in ya Ear, Reminisce...an amazing classic artist.

I LOVE rap. But the state it's in now is just awful.

Other than that, I agree with the rest of that. The music industry is terrible nowdays anyways lol.

I've recently purchased "Waking the Fallen" by Avenged Sevenfold. All in all, if you like some of the heaviest riffs in metal history combined with some intense double-lead action and a combination of clean and screamed vocals, it'll be your cup of tea. I was highly impressed by this release, and I think it may be the group's most inspired recording.

In terms of the technical, M. Shadows (lead Vocals) did a fantastic job. With more clean vocals in the recording, it adds a taste of melodic depth to songs that would just be really heavy without them. In addition, he achieves some really high-pitched screaming action that I think would be difficult to reproduce even by the most scream-heavy bands.

In terms of the musicians (Z. Vengeance, Guitars, Backing vocals; S. Gates, Lead Guitars, Piano, Backing vocals; Johnny Christ, Bass Guitars; J. "The Rev" Sullivan, Drums, Backing vocals), they all give remarkable performances. They play some of the heaviest riffs you'll hear in the 2000's, but at the same time retain a melodic depth in many of their recordings, giving them an extra layer of depth and musicality. Their playing echoes in the styles of the old heavy metal bands like Iron Maiden and even has some etchings of Thrash Metal and even some traces of Punk.

In particular, I was impressed with the tracks "Remenissions", "I Won't See You Tonight (Part 1)", "Unholy Confessions", "Second Heartbeat", "Eternal Rest" and "Chapter Four".

I've always been a fan of heavy metal (mostly alternative stuff), Rhythm Guitarist for two years, lately here's some stuff I've been listening to:

"Toxicity" -- System of a Down
System of a Down is way out there. I think they are about as alternative as you can get. With odd tempos and time signatures and some even crazier sounds, they are definitely their own act, and they follow the beat of their own drummer so to speak.

Chop Suey is one of my favorite songs ever. So freaking fun on RB on expert. And on regular drums too.

Also I thought I saw Avenged 7fold in your sig once, I love Almost Easy. Also Disturbed's Down with the sickness. As you can see I play a lot of Rockband 2 :p

I am a pop fan, and I love listening to my music. I know that this music wasn't created the most skillfully, these artists are talented but probably don't write their own songs, but it all still gets in my head. I like Fort Minor and Linkin Park as well, I think Mike Shinoda is incredibly talented.

I'm in a band in which I sing for, and the guitarist and bassist (and most of my friends) are hipsters and they listen to rock and older stuff and Slint, and i just don't like that music unless it's poppy. I like Rock though because it's what my dad always listened to and I did when I was young. I don't go searching it out though, I listen to the more pop-like rock (three doors down, nickelback, utter crap but I love it) and what's laying around the house. I went to a Foo Fighters concert in St. Louis last month and I LOVED it, the music just blew me away and I love that band. I play RB a lot and it's opened up my music tastes, but I'll always like the more poppy stuff.

I also listen to rap. Lil Wayne's The Leak and Rebirth are my fav things by him, I like Eminem's Recovery, I'm a B.o.b. fan and I like Fort Minor.

I tend to listen to anything, regardless of genre, although there are very few songs in either the rap category or the post-2005 category that I like.

Since I've been in Chicago, I listen to a lot of independent radio (WNUR), as well as getting a better taste for international music (e.g. Pandora, Israeli radio stations via TuneIn). The melodies of a song are what get me into the music... much more so than the lyrics. Ergo, if I don't understand the lyrics but enjoy the background, the song is one that I will like.

That must also be why I'm a big fan of jazz and concert band music (artists like Russ Freeman, Dave Koz, James Swearingen, Bruce Pearson, etc.).

Not to offend anyone, though this is my honest opinion about most songs these days and how they've changed throughout the years from what I've listened to.

1976: "Shake shake shake, shake shake shake, shake your booty."

Modern day: "*****" "*****" "*****" "*****" "*****"
